2020 Hyundai Palisade key replacement

A 2020 Palisade key depends on trim: the base SE uses a plain turn-key with no immobilizer, while SEL and above use ID47 push-button smart keys. We confirm which you have by VIN, then cut or program on site. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.

Surprising but official: the 2020-2021 Palisade is on Hyundai's anti-theft software-update list because the base SE used a turn-key ignition with no immobilizer — a 2021 KBB spec table confirms push-button start and proximity key were not available on the SE (SEL and above only). Most Palisades on the road are push-button cars with ID47 smart keys (TQ8-FOB-4F19/4F32/4F33) programmed via OBD — trim decides.

Which key does a 2020 Palisade actually use?

This is a year where trim decides everything. The base SE was built with a turn-key ignition and no factory immobilizer. The SEL and above came with push-button start and a proximity smart key. Those smart keys use an ID47 (Hitag 3) chip family and are programmed through the OBD port.

That surprises people, because most Palisades on the road are push-button cars. If yours is an SE, though, the key is a mechanical key and there is no chip checking it against the car. If yours is an SEL or higher, you have a smart key with a mechanical backup blade inside the fob.

Every 2020 Palisade key setup has a mechanical backup. That matters if a fob battery dies: the blade lets you open the door, so a dead battery is not the same as a lost key.

  • SE: turn-key ignition, mechanical key, no factory immobilizer
  • SEL and above: push-button start, ID47 (Hitag 3) smart key
  • Both: a mechanical backup key exists

Duplicate or all keys lost: what changes?

For this vehicle, making a duplicate requires an original key to work from. With one working key in hand, a spare is the lighter-cost and simpler route. Having a spare cut before you lose the last one is usually the more economical path.

All keys lost is still possible on a 2020 Palisade. We can work from the vehicle itself with no original key. It takes more steps than a duplicate, which is why it costs more, but you do not need a tow to the dealer just to start over.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the trim if you know it. If you do not, the VIN tells us.
  2. We confirm the key type from the VIN and, on arrival, by looking at your ignition and dash.
  3. We cut the mechanical key, or cut the backup blade and program the smart key, depending on trim.
  4. We test the key in the door and ignition or start button, and test the backup blade too.

Why the base SE needs extra attention

Because the SE has no immobilizer, a plain metal copy of the key will start the car. That is convenient for a spare, but it is also the reason these model years were targeted heavily in the 2021–2023 "Kia Boys" theft wave. Hyundai officially lists the 2020–2021 Palisade for its free anti-theft software update at hyundaiantitheft.com, and we recommend getting that done alongside any key work.

If your car was a theft target or an attempted theft, a new key may not solve the problem. Ignition lock cylinders and steering columns are often damaged in those attempts, and the repair can mean rebuilding or replacing the lock cylinder, not just cutting a key. We look at the cylinder first, because a fresh key in a worn or broken ignition will keep causing trouble.

What affects the price of a Palisade key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the factors that move the cost:

  • Trim: a mechanical turn-key costs less to produce than an ID47 smart key with programming.
  • Duplicate versus all keys lost: a spare from an existing key is simpler than starting from nothing.
  • Lock condition: a damaged ignition or door lock adds repair or rebuild work.
  • Number of keys: programming a second fob in the same visit is usually more economical than coming back later.
  • Location and hour: a mobile van visit differs from bringing the car to our storefront.

What we confirm by VIN before we promise anything

The data on this model year is clear on the split between SE and SEL-and-above, but trim and key part numbers can vary, and fobs are sold under several part numbers. We do not guess. We confirm the exact key type by VIN and in person before cutting or programming anything, and we will tell you plainly if a particular situation needs the dealer.

Frequently asked questions

Does my 2020 Palisade have a push-button start?

Only if it is an SEL or higher. The base SE has a turn-key ignition. Push-button start and the proximity key were not available on the SE.

Can you make a key if I lost every key?

Yes, all keys lost is possible for this vehicle. It involves more work than a duplicate, so it costs more. We confirm the key type by VIN first.

Will a plain metal copy start my SE?

Yes, because the base turn-key trim has no factory immobilizer. That is also why these years were targeted in thefts, so we recommend Hyundai's free anti-theft software update.

What chip does the SEL smart key use?

The smart keys use an ID47 (Hitag 3) chip family and are programmed through the OBD port. We verify the exact fob by VIN before ordering or programming.

My ignition was damaged in an attempted theft. Is a new key enough?

Often not. Ignition cylinders and steering columns damaged in these attempts may need a lock rebuild or replacement. We inspect the cylinder first.

Do I need an original key to make a spare?

Yes, a duplicate needs an original key to work from. Without one, it becomes an all-keys-lost job.

Can I call at night?

Yes. Our line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.

We cover all these cities
