The 2024–2025 Kona uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Hyundai Kona key guide.

New SX2 generation: smart key/push-button standard, Hitag-AES 4A fobs (95440-BE560, TQ8-FOB-4F61M43). Aftermarket 4A all-keys-lost coverage is maturing — confirmed per job.
What kind of key does the 2024 Kona use?
The 2024 Kona is the new SX2 generation, and with it Hyundai made the smart key and push-button start standard. There is no traditional bladed key to cut and no ignition cylinder to turn. The car senses the fob nearby, and you start it with the button.
Inside each fob is a 4A transponder chip in the Hitag AES family. That is a newer, encrypted chip, and it is the reason a hardware-store copy will not work. A blank shell with the right buttons still cannot start the car until the chip is matched to your Kona's immobilizer. The fobs we see listed for this model include part numbers like 95440-BE560 and TQ8-FOB-4F61M43, but we match the exact fob to your car by VIN rather than by guesswork.
Your fob also hides a mechanical emergency blade. That backup is what gets you into the car when the fob is dead. Keep it in mind, because it matters in the next section.
- Key type: smart-proximity fob with push-to-start
- Chip: 4A (Hitag AES), verified against two independent references
- Programming method: through the OBD port
- Mechanical backup blade: yes, built into the fob
Do you need a duplicate, or are all your keys lost?
For this setup, making a duplicate requires an original working key. If you still have one fob, adding a second is the simpler job. We work from the key you have, program the new fob to the car, and test that both start it and lock and unlock the doors.
If every fob is gone, it is still possible to get you back on the road. All-keys-lost on a 2024 Kona is done by professional programming through the OBD port. It takes more work than adding a spare, because there is no existing key to work from, and that is why it costs more.
We would rather you call before you try anything yourself or have the car towed. If the Kona is at home, work, or a parking structure, our mobile vans can come to you. If it is easier to bring a fob in, our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood.
What about a dead fob or worn buttons?
A dead battery is the most common issue with this fob. The dash shows a 'key not detected' message, and the car will not start, but the emergency blade still opens the door. Before you replace anything, a fresh battery is worth trying. If the message stays after that, the fob itself may have failed.
The other common problems are worn buttons and cracked shells. A cracked shell does not always mean a new key. Sometimes the electronics are fine, and the fix is a matter of how the fob is housed. We will look at it and tell you straight whether it needs replacing.
The bigger problem is the lost fob. A lost smart fob costs more to replace than a bladed key ever did, and with only one fob left, a single loss turns a small errand into an all-keys-lost job. Getting a spare made while you still have a working fob is usually the more economical route.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2024 Kona key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. Here is what actually moves it:
- Whether you still have a working fob. A duplicate from an original key is lighter-cost work than all keys lost.
- The fob itself. A Hitag AES smart fob costs more than a basic remote head key, and the exact part depends on your VIN.
- Whether we come to you. A mobile visit involves travel, while bringing the fob to our Westwood storefront can be the more economical route.
- The time of day. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but after-hours calls involve more disruption on our end.
- Condition of the existing fob. A cracked shell or a battery swap is a different job than a full replacement.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
One honest note. This is a new generation, and support for 4A all-keys-lost work in the aftermarket is still maturing. That means we confirm each job rather than promising a result over the phone. When you call, have the VIN ready and tell us how many working fobs you have. We will tell you plainly what the car needs and whether anything about it means a dealer is the better route.
We are one company, not a dispatch service that passes your call to whoever is free. Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with David overseeing the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for theirs before work begins.
For other years or trims, see the Hyundai Kona overview or the wider Hyundai key guide. You can also contact us with your VIN, or start at our main page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a spare 2024 Kona fob if I still have one working key?
Yes. A duplicate requires an original key, and you have one. We program the new fob to the car through the OBD port and test that it starts the car and works the doors.
What if I lost every key to my 2024 Kona?
All keys lost is possible and handled with professional programming. Aftermarket coverage for this 4A chip is still maturing, so we confirm your exact car by VIN before we commit to the job.
My Kona says 'key not detected.' Is the fob broken?
Often it is just a dead fob battery. The emergency blade hidden in the fob will still open the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the message persists, the fob may need to be replaced or reprogrammed.
Is there a key blade in the smart fob?
Yes. The fob has a mechanical backup blade. It gets you into the car if the battery dies, but starting the car still depends on the chip inside the fob.
Can I buy a fob online and have you program it?
Sometimes, but it has to be the right fob for your VIN with the correct Hitag AES chip. A wrong or unmatched fob cannot be used. Call us with your VIN first so you do not buy the wrong part.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either works. Our mobile vans can come to the car, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 any time, day or night.
