The 2017–2020 Fusion uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Ford Fusion key guide.
2017 Ford Fusion: key facts
- Key type
- Smart / proximity key
- Push-to-start
- Yes
- Transponder chip
- Varies by trim — we confirm by VIN
- Programming
- OBD
- All keys lost
- We can originate new keys on site
A locksmith guide shows this refresh moving to a smart key with push-button start (Hitag Pro-family chip); base S trims may still carry a bladed flip key — confirm per vehicle. Proximity all-keys-lost can require an active-alarm adapter. US Fusion sales ended with the 2020 model year.
What kind of key does a 2017 Fusion use?
Our data lists the 2017 Fusion as a smart proximity key car with push-button start. You carry the fob, the car senses it, and you press the button to start the engine. There is no key to turn in the ignition. That is the setup most owners of this model year will have.
Hidden inside that fob is a mechanical backup key. If the fob battery dies, the car may show a 'No key detected' message and refuse to start with the normal routine, but the emergency blade still opens the driver's door. That blade is the reason a dead fob is usually an annoyance rather than a tow.
The problems we hear about most with this kind of key fall into three groups:
- Dead fob batteries, which cause the 'No key detected' message even though the fob itself is fine.
- Lost fobs, which cost more to replace than the older bladed keys many Ford owners are used to.
- Fobs that were soaked, run through the wash, or crushed in a pocket or a car door.
Spare copy or all keys lost: what changes for this car?
If you still have a working fob, making another one is the simpler job. For this setup the original key is needed to duplicate, so having one in hand matters. We cut the emergency blade if needed and program the new fob to the car through the OBD port. Our data shows this method does not require NASTF SDRM access.
If every fob is gone, replacement is still possible. The data confirms all-keys-lost work can be done on this car. It just takes more steps, because we have no existing key to work from. Our notes also say proximity-key cars in this situation can require an active-alarm adapter, so we plan for that rather than being surprised by it.
Either way, the car does not need to be towed to a dealer first in the general case. Our mobile vans come to you, and the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood is available if you would rather bring the car or fob in. Call first so we can tell you what we need to see.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and give us the year, model, and, if you can, the VIN.
- Tell us whether you have any working fob, a dead fob, or none at all.
- We confirm what your specific car carries before we cut or program anything.
- We prepare the replacement fob and emergency blade, then program it to the car by OBD.
- We test the new fob for starting, locking, and unlocking, and test the emergency blade in the door.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a replacement Fusion key?
We will not quote a number on a web page, because the same car can need different work depending on the situation. These are the things that move the cost:
- Whether you have a working fob to copy or have lost all of them. All keys lost is more involved.
- Which fob your car actually carries. Trim level matters on this model year, as explained below.
- Whether an active-alarm adapter is needed for the programming session.
- Whether the fob is new or a used one, and whether it can be properly reprogrammed.
- Where the work happens: at the storefront, or at your location with a mobile van.
- The time of day. We answer around the clock, and after-hours calls involve different scheduling.
What is unverified, and how we handle it
We want to be straight about this. The chip family for this year is not verified in our data. One locksmith guide points to a Hitag Pro-family chip on this refresh, but that is a single source and we do not treat it as settled. We would rather tell you that than guess.
The same guide suggests base S trims may still carry a bladed flip key instead of a smart fob. That is the main reason we confirm by VIN and by looking at the key in your hand or the car's ignition area before ordering or cutting anything. If your Fusion turns out to have a push-button start, the smart-key information above applies. If it has a turn-key ignition, the job is different, and we will say so.
One more fact that helps: US Fusion sales ended with the 2020 model year, so this is a car we expect to see for a long time. Replacement fobs remain part of normal service for it.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Fusion fob?
We have been in business since 1987, and one company handles your call, your van visit, and your programming. There is no dispatch middleman passing your job around. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start, including us. Frequently asked questions
My 2017 Fusion says 'No key detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. The most common cause on smart-key cars is a dead fob battery. The hidden emergency blade still opens the door, so you are not locked out. If a fresh battery does not fix it, call us and we will look at whether the fob itself has failed.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
Yes. Our data shows all-keys-lost replacement is possible for this setup. It takes more work than copying from an existing fob, and it may need an active-alarm adapter. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will explain what is involved.
Do I need to bring my original key to have a copy made?
For this car, having an original key is needed for straightforward duplication. If you do not have one, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job instead.
Does my 2017 Fusion have a smart key or a regular flip key?
Most are listed as smart proximity keys with push-button start, but a locksmith guide suggests base S trims may still carry a bladed flip key. We confirm by VIN and in person rather than assuming.
Will I have to go to the Ford dealer?
Not for the general case, based on our data. Programming is done by OBD and does not require NASTF SDRM access. If your particular car turns out to be an exception, we will tell you plainly before doing any work.
Do you come to me, or do I come to you?
Either works. Our mobile vans travel across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call first so we can confirm what the job needs.
