2013 Ford Fusion key replacement

Your 2013 Ford Fusion uses a flip key with a mechanical backup key, and most trims start with the key in the ignition. The chip type is disputed between vendors, so we test it before cutting. Programming is done through the OBD port. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.

The 2013–2016 Fusion uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Ford Fusion key guide.

Vendors genuinely split on the 2013-2016 flip key (N5F-A08TAA / 164-R7986): UHS lists it as 128-bit, CLK/Strattec copy says Texas 4D63 80-bit, and a locksmith guide claims Hitag Pro — we read the existing key or test the chip before cutting. Titanium trims use a smart proximity fob with push-button start.

What kind of key does a 2013 Fusion use?

Most 2013 Fusions use a flip key: a metal blade that folds into a plastic shell with the remote buttons built in. It is not a push-to-start setup on these cars. You put the key in the ignition and turn it. There is also a mechanical backup key, so a dead fob battery does not leave you locked out of the car.

The exception is the Titanium trim. Those cars use a smart proximity fob with push-button start, which is a different key and a different job. If you are not sure which one you have, look for a start button on the dash. We can also confirm it from the VIN when you call.

The flip key has known weak spots. The hinge that folds the blade out tends to break, and the shell wears down with years of pocket use. The blade is a high-security, side-milled cut, so an ordinary hardware-store key machine cannot copy it. It needs a specialty machine.

  • Flip key with built-in remote: standard on most 2013 Fusions
  • Smart proximity fob with push-button start: Titanium trims
  • Mechanical backup key: yes
  • Programming method: OBD port, no NASTF SDRM access required on this year

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

If you still have a working key, copying it is the simpler job. For this year, the original key is needed to make a duplicate. We cut the blade on the specialty machine and program the new key to the car through the OBD port.

If every key is gone, replacement is still possible on this Fusion. It takes more steps because there is no original to read, so we work from the car itself. If the car is at home or at work and cannot be driven, our mobile vans come to it. Otherwise you can bring it to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, trim and whether you have a start button or a key slot.
  2. We confirm the key type from the VIN and ask whether you have any working key at all.
  3. We read the existing key or test the chip, so we know what the car expects before any blade is cut.
  4. We cut the side-milled blade on the specialty machine.
  5. We program the key and remote through the OBD port, then test the lock, unlock and start functions with you watching.

What affects the price of a 2013 Fusion key?

We do not quote numbers in a web article because the real price depends on your situation. These are the factors that move it:

  • Duplicate or all keys lost. A duplicate with an original key in hand is usually the more economical route.
  • Flip key or Titanium proximity fob. They are different parts and different programming.
  • Whether we come to you or you come to the storefront.
  • Whether you need only a new shell or hinge, or a whole new key. If the electronics still work, a worn shell can sometimes be swapped without replacing the whole key.
  • Whether the remote buttons need programming along with the key.
  • Time of day, since we answer around the clock and some jobs cannot wait for morning.

What we have not been able to verify

The transponder chip in the 2013-2016 Fusion flip key is where sources disagree. One parts supplier lists it as a 128-bit chip. A Strattec-based supplier copy says Texas 4D63, 80-bit. A locksmith guide claims Hitag Pro. We have not verified which one applies to your key, and we will not pretend we have.

That is why we read your existing key or test the chip before cutting anything. If all keys are lost, we confirm by VIN and by the car's own behavior. This avoids buying the wrong blank or chip.

One related problem: if the PATS theft light flashes and the engine cranks but will not start, the car is not reading the chip. That can mean the key is not programmed, the chip is damaged, or something else is wrong. We diagnose it before we sell you a new key.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile service vans covering 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. One company handles your call, your key and your programming, with no dispatch middlemen. David, our owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work on your car.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2013 Ford Fusion have push-to-start?

Most do not. Standard trims use a flip key turned in the ignition. The Titanium trim is the exception, with a smart proximity fob and push-button start. Tell us which you have when you call and we will confirm by VIN.

Can you make a 2013 Fusion key if I lost all of them?

Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible on this year. It takes more steps than copying a working key, and we confirm the chip type before cutting the blade.

Do I need my original key to get a copy?

For a duplicate, yes. The original key is needed on this year. If you have none, the job becomes an all-keys-lost replacement.

What chip does my 2013 Fusion key use?

Sources disagree. One lists a 128-bit chip, another says Texas 4D63 80-bit, and a third claims Hitag Pro. We read the existing key or test the chip before cutting, rather than guess.

Why does my Fusion crank but not start with the PATS light flashing?

The car is not reading the chip in the key. The cause can be an unprogrammed key, a damaged chip, or another fault. We check it first so you do not pay for a key that will not fix it.

My flip key hinge broke. Do I need a whole new key?

Not always. Broken hinges and worn shells are common on this key. If the electronics still work, a new shell may be enough. We look at it before recommending a replacement.

Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?

Either works. Our mobile vans come to you, or you can visit our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. Call (213) 577-1366, answered 24 hours a day.
