The 2023–2026 X1 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the BMW X1 key guide.

U11 generation: newest BDC architecture with standard Digital Key. No established aftermarket add-key or all-keys-lost path — dealer-only, stated plainly.
What kind of key does the 2023 X1 use?
The 2023 X1 is a U11-generation car, and it comes with a smart proximity key. There is no blade to turn in an ignition. The car senses the fob when it is inside, and you start it with the push-button. The newest BMW body-control architecture sits behind that system, and Digital Key support is standard on this generation. Digital Key lets a phone or a card act as a key on cars equipped for it.
The fob also holds a mechanical backup key. That matters more than people expect. If the fob battery dies or the car can't find the fob, the mechanical key is how you get into the car while you sort out the rest.
We do not state a transponder chip family for this year. Our data doesn't verify one, and we won't guess at something that decides whether a key works. If you want the technical details for your car, we confirm them by VIN.
Can you duplicate a 2023 X1 key, or is all keys lost a problem?
For this setup, an original key needs to be present to make a duplicate. That is the straightforward case: you have one working fob and want a second.
The all-keys-lost case is harder. For the 2023 X1 there is no established aftermarket add-key or all-keys-lost path. Programming on this car is dealer-only, and we'd rather say that plainly than let you wait on a locksmith who can't finish the job.
In practice, that means:
- One working fob in hand: ask us first, and we'll confirm by VIN what can and can't be done outside the dealer.
- No working fob at all: expect the dealer to be involved in programming. We can talk you through the process and what to bring.
- Fob works but the battery is weak: this is usually a simple fix and not a replacement situation at all.
What should you do when the X1 says it can't detect the key?
The most common problem on this year is a dead coin cell in the fob, which brings up a 'key not detected' warning. Before you assume the key is lost or broken, work through this:
- Check the warning. If the car says the key isn't detected but you are holding the fob, suspect the battery first.
- Use the mechanical backup key to open the door if the remote buttons no longer respond.
- Replace the fob's coin cell. The owner's manual shows how to open the fob and which way the cell goes.
- Try starting the car again with the fob in the position the manual describes for a weak-battery start.
- If the warning continues with a fresh battery, call us. The cause could be the fob itself or the car, and we'll tell you honestly which kind of job it is.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2023 X1 key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your situation. For this car, these are the factors that move the cost:
- Whether you still have a working original key. A duplicate from a working fob is a different job from a lost-key job.
- Whether the dealer has to do the programming. On this generation, that is the expected route, so the dealer's process and scheduling shape the total.
- Whether you're replacing a fob or only the battery. A coin cell is a small fix compared with a new smart key.
- Whether you need Digital Key set up again. If your car is equipped for it, enrollment on a phone or card is a separate step from the physical fob.
- Where the car is. If it can't be driven, getting it to the dealer adds a step.
What we haven't verified, and why call us
This year's record is marked unverified. The transponder chip family isn't confirmed, and the programming data says dealer-only without an equipment requirement we can point to. So we confirm by VIN and in person rather than promise something from a chart. If that means the job belongs to the dealer, we'll say so.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 2023 BMW X1 have a physical key?
It has a smart proximity fob with push-button start, and the fob contains a mechanical backup key. You use the backup key for the door if the fob battery is dead.
Can Wilshire Lock & Key program a new 2023 X1 key?
Programming for this year is dealer-only, and there is no established aftermarket add-key path. Call us with your VIN and we'll tell you honestly what we can handle and what the dealer has to do.
What if I lost every key to my 2023 X1?
There is no established aftermarket all-keys-lost path for this generation, so the dealer is usually involved. We can explain the steps and what to bring, but we won't claim a workaround we can't verify.
Why does my X1 say 'key not detected'?
A dead coin cell in the fob is the common cause on this year. Replace the battery first. If the message continues with a fresh cell, the fob or the car needs a closer look.
Do I need my original key to make a copy?
Yes. For this setup an original key needs to be present for duplication. That is why a lost second key is much easier to deal with while you still have the first.
Does the 2023 X1 support BMW Digital Key?
Digital Key is standard on this generation, and it works on cars equipped for it. Owners have had enrollment problems with the phone or card, so check that your car is equipped and enrolled correctly.
Do you confirm the chip type before working on my car?
We don't state a chip family for this year because it isn't verified. We confirm details by VIN and in person before saying what's possible.
