What makes a vacation rental lock different from a home lock?
A family home has a short, stable list of people who can get inside. A vacation rental has a rotating cast: each new guest, a cleaning crew, maybe a co-host or property manager, a pool or garden service, and the occasional repair visit. Every one of those people is a possible copy of a key or a code that outlives the stay. The lock has to be easy for a stranger to use at night with luggage in both hands, and still hard for anyone to use after checkout.
That tension is the whole job. Most of the calls hosts bring us come down to a handful of recurring needs: setting up keypad or smart locks so nobody has to hand over a key, rotating codes so the last guest's access ends, rekeying when a physical key goes missing, and repairing hardware that has been worn down by heavy turnover. None of these is an emergency on day one. They become emergencies when nobody planned for them, usually at checkout or late on arrival night.
This page is written for hosts and owners who would rather plan that work than scramble. If you are locked out right now, skip to the lost-key section below or call (213) 577-1366. We answer around the clock.
What do Bradbury hosts usually ask us to do?
The requests repeat, which is why we can plan around them. For a rental property, the work typically looks like this:
- Install a keypad deadbolt or smart lock on the front door, with a physical key kept as a backup in a secure place.
- Set up separate codes for cleaners, co-hosts and guests, so one person's access can be removed without touching anyone else's.
- Rekey every exterior lock to a single key after a purchase, a lost key or a change of property manager, so you carry one key instead of a ring.
- Repair or replace sticky, loose or worn locks and handles that take a beating from constant turnover.
- Service keypads and latch hardware on driveway gates, which matter a great deal on estate properties.
- Strengthen side doors and sliding doors, which are often weaker than the front deadbolt.
- Cut extra keys for the few people who truly need one, and keep that list short.
How does a smart lock setup work, step by step?
A good installation is mostly decisions made before the lock goes on the door. This is the order we follow on a rental.
- We ask how guests arrive and who else needs access: guests only, or also cleaners, a co-host or a manager.
- We inspect the door itself: thickness, bore holes, how the latch lines up with the strike plate, and whether the frame has shifted. A smart lock on a door that sticks will fail early.
- We choose hardware that matches the property: a keypad deadbolt, a fully connected smart lock with app control, or a simpler keypad if the property's internet connection is unreliable.
- We install and align the lock, then test the bolt throwing fully, over and over, from both sides of the door.
- We set up your master code and a test code, and show you how to add, change and delete codes yourself.
- We confirm that a physical key still works as a backup and that the battery and low-battery warning behave the way they should.
- We leave you a plain list of what was installed, so the next person to touch that door knows what is on it.

Call (213) 577-1366How often should you change door codes between guests?
The straightforward answer: a guest code should stop working when the stay ends, and it should never be reused for the next person. Many smart locks let you create a code with a start and end date. Others need you to set a code by hand and delete it after checkout. Which method fits depends on the lock and on whether it connects to your phone or a hub. For help choosing and installing, see our smart lock installation page.
Where hosts get into trouble is the permanent codes. The cleaner's code from two years ago, the code you gave a handyman for one visit, the code a former co-host still remembers. Each one stays alive until somebody deletes it. We suggest a short routine: review the full code list at regular intervals, remove anything you cannot attach to a current person, and change the master code whenever someone who knew it stops working with you.
Codes are only half the picture. Keypads wear in a pattern, and a keypad with visibly scuffed digits tells a stranger where to start. If your lock is not remotely connected, rotating a code means someone has to stand at the door with the master code or a key, so decide ahead of time who that person is.
What if a guest loses a key, keeps a key, or locks you out?
Physical keys are the part of a rental that gets away from you. A guest takes one home by accident, a key goes missing from a lockbox, or you simply lose track of how many copies exist. The honest fix is rekeying: we change the internal pins of the existing lock so the old keys stop working and new ones do. It is usually the more economical route compared with replacing hardware, and the lock stays on the door. Our lock rekeying page explains the process.
If you or a guest is locked out, tell us the type of lock and whether the door has a deadbolt, and we will work to open it without damaging the hardware wherever that is possible. Our house lockout page covers what that looks like. We will also ask for a way to confirm that the person asking is allowed to open the door. For a rental, that usually means reaching the owner or manager. We would rather ask a few questions than open a door for the wrong person.
A guest who will not leave, or a dispute over a booking, is not a lock problem. That is a conversation for the booking platform, your property manager or the proper authorities. Once it is settled, we can rekey or re-code the property so you start clean.

Call (213) 577-1366How much does vacation rental lock work cost in Bradbury?
We do not put a number on a web page, because the same request can be very different work on two doors. Here is what moves the cost:
- The hardware: a basic keypad deadbolt is a different purchase than a full smart lock or a restricted-key high-security cylinder.
- The number of doors: front, back, side, garage entry, sliding doors, a guest house or a pool gate.
- The condition of doors and frames: if a door sags or a strike plate is off, alignment work comes before anything else.
- Rekeying versus replacing: rekeying existing locks is usually the more economical route when the hardware is sound.
- Time of day: an overnight call is different work than a scheduled daytime visit.
- Travel: Bradbury is about 34 miles from our Westwood storefront, and that distance is part of the job.
- Gate hardware, which is its own category with its own parts.
Why does planning ahead keep rental lock costs down?
Doing the whole property in one scheduled visit is the lighter-cost way to handle this. One planned trip to rekey, install and test is less time and travel than three separate urgent calls spread over a season. We explain the cost before work starts, and you decide whether to go ahead.
What is different about hosting in Bradbury?
Bradbury is a small city of roughly 900 residents, made up almost entirely of multi-acre estate lots with custom homes. Much of it sits behind private gates in Bradbury Estates and Woodlyn Lane. There is no commercial district and only a few hundred homes in total. For a host, that changes the lock conversation: the front door is rarely the first barrier a guest meets.
Guests arriving at an estate property usually have to get through a driveway gate, and sometimes a community gate, before they reach the house. Equestrian zoning, long driveways and perimeter fencing are the norm here, so gate keypads, latches and operators are part of check-in. If the gate fails, remote check-in fails with it. We handle gate lock repair as well as doors, so one visit can cover the whole path from gate to bedroom.
Estate homes also tend to justify stronger hardware. High-security locks use restricted keys that cannot be copied at a hardware store, which suits a property where keys change hands. Rekeying after household staff or contractor turnover comes up often on large properties, and a rental has the same issue every time a cleaner or manager changes. If you keep a safe on site, tell us. Safe lockouts and combination changes also come up in estate homes, and the combination should change whenever the list of people who know it changes.
We do not advise on whether a particular property may be rented. Check with Bradbury City Hall and with any association that governs your gate before you list.

Call (213) 577-1366How do wind, dust and distance affect rental locks here?
Bradbury sits in the foothills, with hot, dry summers and strong canyon wind during Santa Ana events. On big open properties, that wind pushes dust and debris into gate operators and exterior keyways. A lock that turned smoothly in spring can start to stick by late summer. For a rental, a sticky keyway is a guest problem: someone arriving after dark who cannot turn a key will call you, or us. Cleaning and servicing exterior hardware on a schedule, especially after a windy stretch, prevents most of it.
We serve both Bradbury ZIP codes, 91008 and 91010, and the parts of town hosts tend to describe to us: Bradbury Estates, Woodlyn Lane, the Mount Olive Drive area and lower Bradbury near Royal Oaks Drive. Royal Oaks Park in Duarte and Monrovia Canyon Park in Monrovia are close by, so when you write directions for guests, mention the gate clearly, because the gate is the first thing they will meet. Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rental property?
We have been in business since 1987, working from a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us at any hour of any day, year-round. It is one company: the people who answer the phone are the people who send the technician, with no dispatch middleman handing your job to whoever happens to be free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. Ask any locksmith for the number before they begin work, and check it yourself. That applies to us as much as anyone else.
If your rental is one of several units, our locksmith for landlords page covers turnover rekeys across multiple doors. For nights and weekends, our 24-hour locksmith page explains how after-hours calls work.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a smart lock on my Bradbury vacation rental?
Yes. We look at the door first, then recommend a keypad deadbolt or a connected smart lock based on how guests arrive and how your internet connection behaves at the property. We also tell you when a door needs repair before any smart lock goes on.
Will a smart lock work if the property has weak Wi-Fi?
Many keypad locks work on the door itself without a network, but features like remote code changes need a connection. On a large estate lot, signal can be patchy near the front door, so we discuss it before choosing hardware.
Can you rekey all my rental's locks to one key?
Usually, yes. Rekeying changes the internal pins so one new key works every exterior lock, and all old keys stop working. If a particular lock is worn or damaged, we will say so and explain whether it should be replaced.
How do I stop a former guest's code from working?
It depends on the lock. Most keypad and smart locks let you delete an individual code through the keypad or an app. If you cannot find the setting, call us and we can walk you through it or visit and reset the lock.
A guest is locked out late at night. Can you help?
We answer the phone 24 hours a day, every day. We will ask about the lock and confirm that the owner or manager authorizes the opening before we proceed, because we do not open a rental door for just anyone.
Do you work on driveway gates at estate properties?
Yes. We service gate keypads, latches and lock hardware. If the problem turns out to be the gate operator itself rather than the lock, we will tell you plainly so you do not pay for the wrong repair.
Should I use a lockbox or a smart lock?
A lockbox is often the lighter-cost option, but everyone shares one code and the key inside can be copied. A smart lock gives each person a separate code that you can remove. We can help you weigh it for your property.
Does a locksmith need a California license?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. You should ask any locksmith for that number before they begin work, and it is reasonable to verify it yourself.
How far is Bradbury from your location?
Bradbury is about 34 miles from our Westwood storefront. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties with mobile vans, and we plan scheduled rental work around that distance.
