What is transponder key programming, and does your car need it?
A transponder key has a small chip inside the plastic head. When you turn the key or press the start button, the car's immobilizer asks that chip for a coded reply. If the reply is not one the car has been taught to accept, the engine will not run, even when the metal blade turns the ignition perfectly. Transponder key programming is the work of teaching the car to accept a particular chip, and making sure the chip itself is set up correctly for your vehicle.
That is why a plain hardware-store copy so often disappoints. The blade may open the door and slide into the ignition, and then the car either cranks and dies or does nothing at all. A matching cut is only half of the job. The other half is the electronic handshake between the key and the car.
Whether your vehicle uses a chip depends on the make, model and year, and we do not guess from memory or from a general rule. We confirm by VIN or by looking at the vehicle in person. The same goes for how the key gets programmed. Some cars let us add a key with our own equipment, some need a specific procedure, and a few are dealer-only. We tell you which situation you are in before we start any work.
When do Arcadia drivers need a chip key programmed?
Most of our calls for car key programming fall into a handful of situations. If yours is not on the list, call anyway and describe what happened, because the right fix depends on the details.
- You lost the only key, or every key, and the car will not start. Our page on lost car key replacement covers that situation in more depth.
- You still have one working key and want a duplicate transponder key made before you lose it. This is the calmest and usually the more economical route.
- The key head cracked, the chip stopped responding, or the key went through the wash and now opens the door but will not start the car.
- You bought a used car that came with a single key and you want a second one you can trust.
- A key broke off in the ignition or door. That needs broken key extraction first, then a new key can be made.
- Your remote buttons failed but the car still starts. That is usually a key fob replacement question rather than a chip question, and we will sort out which one you have.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we program a transponder key for your car?
Here is how a typical visit goes. The details shift from vehicle to vehicle, but the order stays about the same.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, make and model, where the car is parked, and what keys you still have. A person answers, at any hour, because the line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- We confirm what your vehicle needs by VIN, including the type of key and the programming method. If something is unclear or the information conflicts, we say so plainly and verify in person rather than promise something we cannot check.
- We tell you what the job involves and what drives the cost, then give you the price before we begin. You decide whether to go ahead.
- A van comes to your car. Before any key work, we ask for ID and proof you own or are authorized to use the vehicle, such as registration. We ask everyone, every time.
- We cut the key blade to match your vehicle, using your existing key as a reference if you have one, or working from the vehicle and its lock if you do not.
- We program the chip to your car's immobilizer and, where the vehicle allows it, set up any other function that belongs with the key.
- We test the key properly: it opens the door, turns the ignition or starts the car, and keeps working after the car has been turned off and started again. You leave with a key that has been checked, not one we hope will work.
What is the difference between a duplicate transponder key and a replacement?
People use both terms, but the situations are different, and the difference matters for the work involved.
A duplicate transponder key is a spare made while you still have a working key. On many vehicles this is the simpler path, because the car already recognizes a key and the process can build on that. We confirm by VIN whether that applies to your car. It is also the point where the least goes wrong, so if you have only one key today, making a second one now is the sensible move.
A transponder key replacement or chip key replacement is what you need when no working key remains. That job is more involved. The car has to be taught a new key without an old one to lean on, and depending on the vehicle that can mean extra equipment, extra verification, and in a small number of cases the dealer. We cover what is involved on our broader car key replacement page, but the honest summary is this: the cost and effort of starting from zero is almost always higher than adding a spare early.
For a plain metal key with no chip, a fast duplicate is a different and much simpler service. If you are not sure which type of key you hold, send us a photo or bring it by the storefront and we will tell you.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of transponder key programming in Arcadia?
We do not publish numbers on a web page because the same job can look very different from one car to the next. What we can do is lay out what moves the price, so a quote from us, or from anyone else, makes sense to you.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is generally less involved than starting from nothing.
- The type of key. A basic chip key, a laser-cut or high-security blade, a flip key and a proximity key are different parts with different costs.
- The vehicle itself. Make, model and year decide which programming method applies and what equipment is needed.
- How many keys you want made. Programming a second key during the same visit is usually the more economical route compared with calling us back later.
- Cutting. Some keys need a blade cut or re-cut, and some are programmed only.
- Time of day and distance. A call in the middle of the night costs us more to answer than a weekday request, and Arcadia is about 27 miles from our Westwood storefront, so travel is part of the picture.
- Anything unusual: a damaged ignition, a broken key piece, or a car parked somewhere hard to reach.
When is transponder key programming a dealer-only job?
Not every vehicle can be handled by a locksmith, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Some makes and model years lock key programming behind dealer-only procedures or proprietary access. Others have conflicting or unclear information about what is supported, particularly on newer or less common models.
When that is the case, we will tell you before we dispatch a van or take a deposit. We check the VIN, tell you what we can and cannot do on your vehicle, and if the dealer is the only route, we say so, even though it means we do not get the job. We would rather lose a call than send a driver home with a key that does not start the car.
A related situation: sometimes the key is fine and the problem is the car. A key that turns roughly, sticks, or fails intermittently can point to a worn ignition cylinder, and programming a new key will not fix that. In that case you are looking at ignition repair, and we will say so after we look rather than program a key you do not need.
Transponder key programming across Arcadia: neighborhoods, ZIP codes and real scenarios
We serve all of Arcadia, in both 91006 and 91007, and our vans reach the full range of the city's streets: the 1930s to 1950s ranch-style homes in Upper Rancho and Lower Rancho, the larger two-story homes rebuilt since the 1990s in Santa Anita Oaks, and the hillside properties in the Arcadia Highlands. Condos and townhomes near downtown Arcadia and along Huntington Drive add garages and shared parking to the mix.
Where the car sits shapes how we do the job. In Santa Anita Oaks and the Arcadia Highlands, a car is often in a driveway behind a gate, or at the end of a long drive. Tell us the gate code or who will let us in when you call, so the van does not arrive at a closed gate. Programming happens at the car, so a vehicle that starts but will not accept a new key can be handled right where it is parked. In Baldwin Stocker and the older Rancho neighborhoods, street parking and shared driveways are common, and we simply work out the safest spot to park the van and do the work.
One scenario worth naming is event days at Santa Anita Park. A key lost or broken in those lots leaves a car that will not start in the middle of a crowd. If the car is locked with the key inside, we can help with a car lockout first, and if there is no working key afterward, the programming can be done in the lot where the car sits. That is the reason we run mobile vans and not just a storefront. The same applies to shoppers who lose a key around The Shops at Santa Anita.
Arcadia's hot summers are also worth a thought. A key left on a dashboard or in a hot parked car all season is not doing its plastic housing or its battery any favors. That is a general observation, not a diagnosis of any specific key, but it is one more reason to make a spare before the original gives out.
If you would like us to come out, our mobile locksmith service and our automotive locksmith service pages explain how that works, and the phone is the same either way: (213) 577-1366.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a chip key?
We have been in business since 1987, and that history is not a slogan, it is why the cars we see are not new to us. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, Los Angeles, plus mobile service vans, so you can bring a key to us or have us come to you. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and Arcadia is one of them.
You are talking to one company. There is no dispatch middleman who takes your call, passes it along and takes a cut. The people answering the phone are tied to the people doing the work, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work that goes out under our name.
On licensing, be a careful customer. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you call for their license number before they touch your car. It takes a moment and protects you.
What should you have ready before we arrive?
A little preparation helps us confirm your vehicle quickly and avoid a wasted trip.
- Year, make and model, and the VIN if you can read it. It is commonly visible at the base of the windshield on the driver's side or on the driver's door jamb label.
- Where the car is parked, including any gate code, garage level or parking instructions.
- How many working keys you have left, even if one works only partly.
- Your ID and proof of ownership or authorization, such as registration.
- A photo of the key or fob if you have one. It helps us identify the type.
- Whether you already bought a blank key or fob online. Tell us before you spend more money, because we need to check whether it is usable on your vehicle, and some are not.
Keep it simple: one call, a clear answer
If you are stuck in Arcadia with a car that will not start, or you would like a spare chip key before that day comes, call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us the car, tell us the situation, and we will tell you plainly what it needs, what drives the cost, and whether it is a job for us or for the dealer.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a transponder key if I have lost all my keys?
In many cases, yes, but it is a more involved job than adding a spare, and it depends on the vehicle. We confirm by VIN what your car supports. If your car is one of the dealer-only cases, we tell you honestly before we do any work.
Can you make a duplicate transponder key without the original?
Sometimes. If you have a working key, adding a spare is usually simpler. Without one, the process changes, and the method depends on your vehicle. Call (213) 577-1366 with your year, make and model and we will explain what applies.
Why did my copied key open the door but not start the car?
The blade was likely cut correctly but the chip was not programmed to your car's immobilizer, or the chip was never the right type. The car checks the chip before it lets the engine run, so a good cut alone is not enough. We can usually sort this out by checking the key and the vehicle.
Do I need to tow my car to the dealer to get a chip key?
Not for most vehicles. We bring programming equipment to your car, wherever it is parked in Arcadia. A few vehicles are dealer-only, and we tell you plainly if yours is one of them so you do not pay for a trip that cannot work.
Will my old lost key still start the car after you program a new one?
That depends on the vehicle and the procedure used. On some cars the programming process can remove keys the car had learned before, which is useful if a key is lost or stolen. We confirm what applies to your car by VIN or in person, and we can discuss it at the time of the call.
What do you need from me to prove the car is mine?
We ask for a photo ID and proof of ownership or authorization, such as registration. We do this for every vehicle, because programming a key to a car is the kind of work that should not happen for someone who has no right to the car.
Can you program a key or fob I bought online?
Sometimes, but not always. Online keys can be the wrong type, locked to another vehicle, or poor quality. Tell us what you bought and your vehicle details, and we will say whether it is usable before we do any programming. We cannot promise an online part will work.
Do you serve both Arcadia ZIP codes, 91006 and 91007?
Yes. Our vans cover all of Arcadia in both ZIP codes, from the foothill homes in the Highlands to downtown and the Las Tunas Drive corridor in South Arcadia. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour.
How much does transponder key programming cost?
It depends on the key type, your vehicle, whether you still have a working key, how many keys you want, and when and where we are called out. We give you the cost before work begins, once we know your vehicle.
