What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Agua Dulce typically need?
Agua Dulce is almost entirely rural ranchettes and custom single-family homes on multi-acre parcels, most of it built from the 1970s onward. There are no apartment blocks or condo garages here, so Mercedes key trouble rarely starts in a parking structure. It starts in a long driveway, beside a barn, at a gated entry, or at an outbuilding a good walk from the house. That changes what you need from a locksmith. You need someone who comes to the car, because the car is often parked where a tow truck is the last thing you want to arrange.
The local situations we see in the data follow the property. Lockouts at rural custom homes near Vasquez Rocks. Gate and entry lock work on ranchettes off Agua Dulce Canyon Road. Hangar and outbuilding locks at Agua Dulce Airpark. New owners of horse properties along Sierra Highway who inherit a car, a gate and a ring of keys nobody can account for. A Mercedes tends to be part of that picture, and its key is rarely the only key in play.
Most calls from Mercedes-Benz owners here fall into a handful of buckets:
- A spare key that was never made, and now the only one is worn, cracked or acting up
- A SmartKey that has stopped syncing after years of daily use
- A dead fob battery, first on the remote buttons and then as a 'key not detected' message on Keyless-Go cars
- An ignition that will not accept or turn the key
- A lockout, with the key inside the car or somewhere out on the property
- A lost key, or every key lost, which is the call that needs the most honest answer
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at your driveway?
We run mobile service vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from that base. That is a real drive, so we do not pretend it is a quick hop. What we can do is make the trip count: get the right information on the phone first so the van arrives with the right equipment and no wasted visit.
Here is how a typical call goes:
- You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers any hour of the day or night, every day of the year.
- We ask for the model, the year, and the VIN if you can read it through the windshield or from your registration. The VIN matters more on a Mercedes than on most brands, as you will see below.
- We tell you plainly which key system your car likely uses and whether it is something we can do at the curb or something that has to go through Mercedes.
- If it is work we can do, a technician drives out with the tools for that generation of car. Tell us exactly where the car is: a gate code, a landmark, which side of Sierra Highway, how far up the driveway.
- On arrival we confirm you own the vehicle before cutting or programming anything, and we check the car so we are not guessing about the ignition or steering lock.
- We tell you what the work involves and what is driving the cost, then do the work, test every function of the new key, and leave you with keys that start the car and lock and unlock it.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes-Benz key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Every Mercedes in our reference data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That sounds like a small detail, but it shapes everything about replacement. The key and the car do not simply share a chip you can copy. They exchange rolling codes, and which system your car uses decides whether we can help at your curb.
From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used what is called the DAS3/FBS3 system. The key is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the electronic ignition, known as the EIS or EZS, and twists. The key and car talk to each other over infrared with rolling codes. There is no clone-able chip in the sense that owners of some other brands expect, so this is work for specialist tooling rather than a quick copy.
Mercedes then moved to a newer system, FBS4, on a model-by-model schedule rather than all at once. The facelifted W212 E-Class changed from April 2013 production. The CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) changed from November 2014. Entirely new platforms arrived with FBS4 from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), the 2015 C-Class (W205), the 2016 GLC (X253) and the 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
The messy part is the overlap. Most W166 ML and GLE models stayed on FBS3 through the end of production in 2019. But a Mercedes service bulletin on fallback procedures lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So on a late ML or GLE we do not assume. We confirm by VIN, in person if needed, before telling you what is possible. If a company tells you the answer from the year alone on one of these, they are guessing.
What can we do, and what can't we do, on each system?
On FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most GLE/W166 models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, specialist locksmiths can do the whole job. Professional tools, the kind from Xhorse, Abrites and Autel's IM series, read the EIS or EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, work out the key password online, and generate new keys. That includes the case where every key is lost. On some chassis, namely the W204 C-Class, the W207, and the pre-facelift W212 E-Class, an electronic steering lock emulator is also needed as part of the work.
On FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, we say it plainly: added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in its Xentry Diagnostics system before a key can be enabled or disabled. Some specialists are developing limited FBS4 capability, but it is not something we would ask you to count on. Mercedes also handles key security through its own dealer authorization rather than the industry route familiar from domestic brands.
What we can still do on an FBS4 car is the surrounding work: get you into a locked car, diagnose whether the problem is really the key, and tell you honestly what the dealer process will require so you are not surprised.

Call (213) 577-1366What if you have lost every Mercedes-Benz key?
All keys lost is the call people dread, and the answer depends entirely on the generation. On an FBS3 car, we can generate a new key from scratch using the tools described above. That means working with the ignition electronics, and on W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis it also means dealing with the steering lock. It takes more setup than adding a spare when you still have a working key, and the ranch-country drive adds to it, but it is a job we can do at the car.
On an FBS4 car, losing every key means a VIN-coded order through Mercedes, with proof of ownership, and then a multi-day wait. We would rather tell you that on the first call than have you wait around for a van that cannot solve the problem. Budget the days, and plan your transportation. If the car is parked at a gated property, make sure whoever is dealing with the dealer can get it there, since a car that cannot be started may need transport.
Either way, before you decide a key is truly lost, look. Agua Dulce properties are big, with barns, trailers, outbuildings and trucks where a key could be sitting in a jacket pocket. A fob that has gone dead can also look like a lost key. If you are not sure which situation you are in, our page on lost car key replacement in Agua Dulce walks through the decision.
What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Agua Dulce?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because a Mercedes key job has too many moving parts for any honest flat figure. Here is what actually moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you get from us or anyone else:
- Key system: an FBS3 key generated by a locksmith is a different kind of job than an FBS4 key ordered through Mercedes with proof of ownership
- Whether you have a working key: adding a spare is usually the more economical route than starting over after every key is lost
- Whether a steering lock emulator is required: that extra step applies to W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis
- The key itself: a basic Chrome key shell, a newer SmartKey and a full replacement fob are not the same part
- Time of day: a middle-of-the-night call costs a company more to staff than a planned daytime visit
- Travel: Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our storefront, and distance is a real part of a mobile call
- Diagnosis: if the problem turns out to be a failing ignition or steering lock rather than the key, the repair is a different job from key replacement

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith: what is the fair comparison?
For FBS4 Mercedes models, the dealer is the realistic path, and we will not pretend otherwise. You supply proof of ownership, they order a VIN-coded key, and the car is registered in their diagnostic system before the key is enabled. You wait several days. The car usually has to get to them.
For FBS3 Mercedes models, a specialist locksmith is often the more practical choice, particularly out here. The work happens where the car is parked. You skip the transport from a multi-acre property, and a spare can be made without taking the car out of service. The tradeoff is that you want to know your locksmith has the right Mercedes tooling and will check your VIN honestly, rather than one who tries everything and hopes.
The fair answer is that neither is always better. The right choice depends on your car's system, which is why we start with the VIN. If the answer is dealer, we tell you. For a wider look at how the process differs by brand, see our pages on Mercedes-Benz keys and car keys in general.
Problems that look like a bad key but are not
A surprising number of Mercedes key calls turn out to be something else. Before paying for a new key, it helps to know what the common failure points are:
- A worn or failed EIS/EZS electronic ignition, where the key is not recognized or will not turn
- A failed electronic steering lock motor on W204 C-Class and on W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class models, where the dash wakes up but the key will not turn, which feels exactly like a bad key
- SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use
- Dead fob batteries, where the remote buttons die first and then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons and broken emergency blades
Mercedes-Benz key help across Agua Dulce and ZIP 91390
Agua Dulce is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, and all of it falls under ZIP 91390. We cover the whole of it, and it helps to describe where you are in local terms, because street addresses on rural parcels do not always lead a driver straight to the car.
Around the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center and the junction with Sierra Highway, the ranchettes tend to have driveway gates. A locked Mercedes behind a gate with no code is a different problem from one in an open yard, so tell us about access when you call. Along the Sierra Highway corridor, horse properties change hands, and new owners often want every lock rekeyed and every car key accounted for. In the Darling Road area and Sleepy Valley, the properties are large enough that a car can be a long way from the house. Near Vasquez Rocks, custom homes sit well off the road, and lockouts there are the kind where nobody else is nearby to help. Toward Mint Canyon, on the southwest side heading to Canyon Country, we treat the same way: give us the nearest landmark and the gate details.
The high-desert climate matters in small ways. At about 2,500 feet, summers are hot and dry, winter nights are cold, and wind is frequent. Dust works into gate locks and padlocks, and seasonal temperature swings shift door frames. If your Mercedes shares a key ring with gate keys, barn padlock keys and house keys, that ring takes more punishment than a city key does. A cracked shell or worn blade is a good reason to deal with a spare before the key fails. For lockouts specifically, our page on car lockout service in Agua Dulce covers what to do while you wait, and our Agua Dulce overview lists everything else we do in town.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes in Agua Dulce?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, any hour. There is no outside dispatch company passing your job to a stranger who happens to be near you, and the work is overseen by David, the owner and lead technician.
One thing worth knowing about any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see it from anyone you hire, including us. It is a fair question and a good habit.
We would rather lose a job than oversell one. If your Mercedes is an FBS4 model and the dealer is the right route, we will say so. If it is an FBS3 car and we can do the work at your driveway, we will explain what is involved and what moves the cost. For the full range of what we do in town, see car key replacement in Agua Dulce, or if your fob is the issue, key fob replacement in Agua Dulce. You can also reach us through our contact page or start from our home page.
Mercedes-Benz models in our key guide
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key at my house in Agua Dulce?
For FBS3 models, generally 2000 to 2014 and most GLE/W166 cars through 2019 once confirmed by VIN, yes, our mobile service can do it at your driveway. For FBS4 models, roughly 2015 onward, replacement keys are effectively dealer-only. We tell you which applies when you call (213) 577-1366.
How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Model and year give a strong hint, but the VIN is the real answer. Some models changed over at specific production dates, and late W166 ML/GLE cars are confirmed per VIN rather than assumed. Have the VIN ready when you call and we will work it out with you.
I lost all my keys. Can you still help?
On an FBS3 car, yes. A technician can read the ignition electronics and generate a new key, sometimes with a steering lock emulator on W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis. On an FBS4 car, the route is a VIN-coded key ordered through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and expect a multi-day wait.
My Mercedes says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. On Keyless-Go cars, a dead fob battery is a common cause, and remote buttons usually fail first. A worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing is another possibility. We can check the key before suggesting a replacement.
The dash lights up but the key will not turn. Is the key bad?
It might not be. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering lock motor produces exactly this symptom and mimics a bad key. A worn ignition can do it as well. Diagnose before you replace anything.
Why will a Mercedes dealer be required for some cars?
On FBS4 cars, keys are coded to the VIN at the factory and ordered through Mercedes with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered in its diagnostic system before a key can be enabled. Limited specialist capability is emerging, but we would not tell you to count on it.
Do you offer Mercedes key service at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Because Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood storefront, give us as much location detail as you can so the trip is efficient.
Should I ask for a license before hiring a locksmith?
Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and any locksmith you hire should be willing to show it. It is a reasonable question for any company, including ours.
