What do Toyota owners in Agoura Hills usually need?

Most Toyota key calls fall into a few groups. Someone has one key and never made a spare. A key opens the doors but will not start the car. A smart fob has stopped being detected. Or the only key is locked inside. Each one is a different job, so the first thing we do is find out which one you have.

Agoura Hills is a driving town, and where trouble happens follows where people park. Much of the housing is 1960s–1980s ranch and two-story tracts that grew up along the Ventura Freeway corridor, with townhomes and condos near Kanan Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Townhome residents often park in shared lots or garages, which means a key left on a kitchen counter can put the car some distance from the spare. Shoppers near Whizin Market Square lock keys in cars in a retail lot like anywhere else. People who work along the Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Kanan Road corridors deal with it at the office instead of at home.

Old Agoura is different. It keeps larger equestrian lots and older rural homes, and a lot of daily life there involves gates, barns and trucks. If you drive an older Toyota truck, there is a fair chance the key is simpler than you expect, and we cover that below. If you want the bigger picture for the whole city, our Agoura Hills locksmith page lists everything we do here.

How does mobile Toyota key service work at the curb?

We do not need your car at a shop. The van carries the key-cutting and programming equipment, and the work is done where the Toyota is parked: a driveway, a townhome guest space, a market lot, a park lot or the side of a road. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and Agoura Hills is about 28 miles from it. We would rather tell you that honestly than pretend we are around the corner.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, whether it has a turn key or a push-button start, and whether you still have any working key.
  2. Have the VIN ready. It is on the dashboard at the base of the windshield and on the driver's door jamb sticker. Toyota chip boundaries change by model and generation, so we confirm by VIN rather than guess.
  3. We tell you which path applies to your car, including whether it is one of the newer models where some procedures may be dealer-only or specialist-only.
  4. A mobile van comes to the car. We verify that you are the owner with ID and registration or other proof that matches the vehicle. We do this for every car, and it protects you.
  5. We cut the blade by code or from the lock, then program the transponder or smart key with professional equipment, usually through the OBD-II port under the dash.
  6. We test everything before we leave: doors, trunk or hatch, remote buttons, and starting the engine more than once. Any other keys you still have are checked too.

Which Toyota key do you have?

Toyota has changed key technology several times, and the dates matter because they decide what the key is made of and how it is programmed. Here is the lineup in plain terms, based on the Toyota data we work from:

Boundaries differ by model. The trucks and SUVs ran older chips years longer than the sedans, so a 2012 pickup and a 2012 sedan may not use the same key technology. That is why we look up your exact model generation by VIN instead of going by year alone.

  • Late 1990s to roughly 2002–2004: Texas 4C fixed-code chips.
  • Mid-2000s: the 40-bit 4D-67 chip, often called the 'dot' chip.
  • Around 2010–2011: the 80-bit G chip (4D-72) phased in.
  • 2013 onward: the 128-bit H chip, first on the 2013 RAV4 and spreading through 2014–2016.
  • Smart and push-button systems: the 128-bit 8A family.
  • Newest models: 8A-BA fobs on 2021+ trucks and hybrids, and NXP Hitag-AES 4A keys on 2019+ Corolla smart keys, the 2023+ Prius running change and the 2025+ Camry. The same 4A family is listed for the 2025+ Highlander in a single catalog we have not yet corroborated, so we treat that one as unconfirmed until we check the actual car.

What if you have lost every Toyota key?

All keys lost is the hardest version of this job, and the honest answer depends on the car. Toyota publishes immobilizer and smart-key reset bulletins, T-SB-0057-18 for 1998–2023 models and T-SB-0013-24 for 2022–2024 models, both hosted by NHTSA. They document an all-keys-lost registration path using Toyota's Techstream software and a security pass-code obtained through Toyota's controlled process. It is a real procedure, but it is controlled on purpose.

On the aftermarket side, professional tools handle add-a-key on G-chip and H-chip cars through the OBD port, and there are documented all-keys-lost procedures for 2015 and newer H-chip bladed keys. For those cars, a van at your curb is often all you need.

Roughly 2020 and newer smart-key vehicles are tighter. In the US, all-keys-lost work there generally requires Toyota server codes, which come through locksmith credentialed access (LSID and NASTF VSP). Coverage for the newest NXP-based keys, the 4A on 2023 and later models and Hitag Pro listed for the 2026 RAV4, is still maturing. Some of those paths may be dealer-only or specialist-only until tool support settles. If your Toyota lands there, we will say so on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish the job.

At the other end, most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras use plain mechanical keys with no programming at all. For those, a lost key is a cutting job, and it is quick work compared with a transponder car. If you are in that situation, our page on lost car key replacement in Agoura Hills walks through what to do first.

What affects the cost of a Toyota key in Agoura Hills?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because a Toyota key is not one product. These are the things that actually move the cost:

  • The key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder blade, a remote-head key, a flip key or a push-button smart key sit at very different levels.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a key to a car that still has one is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
  • The model and generation. Older G-chip and H-chip cars are well supported, and the newest 2020+ smart-key cars can involve server codes and extra steps.
  • The blade. Some blades are cut from a code, some must be cut by decoding the lock, and laser-cut blades need different machinery.
  • Parts quality. We have seen low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips fail intermittently, so a cheap blank is not always the lighter-cost choice in the end.
  • Extra repairs. A worn ignition lock may need attention before any key will behave.
  • How many keys you want made, since making a spare while we are there usually costs less than a second visit.
  • Time of day and distance. Agoura Hills is about 28 miles from our base, and a call in the middle of the night is a different trip from a weekday appointment.

Should you go to the Toyota dealer or call a locksmith?

Both are legitimate, and which is better depends on the car. A dealer has direct factory access, which matters most on the newest models where some procedures may be dealer-only or specialist-only. If your Toyota is one of those, going to the dealer may be the only route, and we will tell you that.

For the large middle of the market, 2000s and 2010s Toyotas on 4D, G and H chips and many bladed or smart keys after them, an automotive locksmith can usually do the same job at your car. The practical differences are mostly logistics. A dealer generally needs the vehicle brought to them, and with all keys lost that can mean towing. We come to the car, and our phone is answered at any hour.

Whoever you choose, ask for their California BSIS locksmith company license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you can check any number with the state. A company that will not give one is not one to hire.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Agoura Hills among them. We run a real storefront in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a physical place behind the phone number. The person who answers is with the company that sends the van. We do not pass your call to a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is free.

David is the owner and lead technician, and he oversees the work. When a Toyota is unusual, such as a newer smart key or a model where our data is not settled, that is the kind of question that goes to him. You can read how we handle the whole brand on our Toyota key service page, or look at the wider car key services overview.

Toyota key service across Agoura Hills neighborhoods

Our mobile service covers the whole city, ZIP 91301 included. Here is how the neighborhoods tend to differ, based on the housing and setting rather than any claim about particular jobs.

In Morrison Ranch and Lake Lindero, many homes sit under HOAs, and parking rules can matter. A technician working at a curb or driveway is a normal sight, but if your community has guest-parking or street-parking rules, let us know when you call so we can plan where to set up. Home lockouts and rekeys are common scenarios in both neighborhoods, and if a car lockout comes up at the same time, the page on car lockout service in Agoura Hills covers it.

Old Agoura has larger equestrian lots and older rural homes. A long driveway or gate can mean the car is a fair walk from the road, so give us clear directions and gate details. Horse-property gate and barn lock work is a local scenario we also handle, so if a Toyota truck key and a barn lock both need attention, one trip can cover both.

Around Liberty Canyon, Fountainwood, Forest Cove, Hillrise and Annandale, the setting is residential, and the usual Toyota problems follow the usual causes: a spare that was never made, a worn blade or a fob battery that quit.

The city sits in a wildland-urban interface with hot, dry summers and strong Santa Ana winds through the canyons, and some housing was rebuilt after the 2018 Woolsey Fire. We will not claim that climate breaks Toyota keys. The practical point is simpler: if you ever evacuate or leave in a hurry, a spare key kept somewhere other than the house is worth having.

What can be fixed short of a full replacement?

Not every Toyota key problem needs a new key. These are the common ones, and several have lighter-cost fixes:

  • A worn ignition lock on a high-mileage 1990s or 2000s Toyota: the key sticks or will not turn. That is a lock problem, not a key problem, and a new key will not fix it alone.
  • A worn blade that no longer turns the locks even though the chip still works. A fresh blade may be all that is needed.
  • A dead smart-fob battery: the car says 'key not detected', yet the emergency blade still opens the door. Try a new battery first. Our key fob replacement service in Agoura Hills covers fobs that are truly dead.
  • A cracked remote-head or flip-key shell, broken flip hinge or worn buttons. The electronics can often be moved into a new shell.
  • A hardware-store copy with no transponder: it opens the doors but will not start the engine. It needs a proper transponder key programmed to the car.
  • A cloned or aftermarket chip that works some days and not others. That one is usually worth replacing outright.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Toyota key in Agoura Hills if I lost every key?

Often yes, but it depends on the car. Many 2000s and 2010s Toyotas can be done at your curb. On roughly 2020 and newer smart-key models, all-keys-lost work generally needs Toyota server codes through credentialed access, and the newest NXP-based keys may be dealer-only or specialist-only for now. Call (213) 577-1366 with the VIN and we will tell you which case you are in.

My Toyota says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead fob battery is the most common cause, and the emergency blade inside the fob usually still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first. If the fob still does not work, it may need reprogramming or replacement.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Toyota?

Only if it contains a transponder chip that is programmed to your car. A plain copy will often open the doors and turn in the lock but will not start the engine. Cheap cloned chips can also fail intermittently, so a proper programmed key is more reliable.

How much does Toyota key replacement cost?

It depends on the key type, whether you have a working key, the model and generation, the blade style, and the time and distance of the visit. Adding a key is usually the more economical route than all keys lost. Call us with the model, year and VIN and we will explain the cost before any work starts.

Do you come out at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, and mobile service runs the same hours. Agoura Hills is about 28 miles from our Westwood storefront, so we will be upfront about the trip when you call.

What do I need to show you before you make a key?

We verify that you own the vehicle, usually with a photo ID and registration or other proof that matches the car. We also use the VIN to confirm the right key and chip for that model. This applies to every Toyota we do.

My old Tacoma or Tundra key has no chip. Is that normal?

It can be. Most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras use plain mechanical keys with no programming. We will confirm by VIN, because boundaries vary by model and some trucks ran older systems longer than the sedans.

Can you reach Old Agoura, Lake Lindero and Morrison Ranch?

Yes. We serve all of Agoura Hills, ZIP 91301, including Old Agoura, Morrison Ranch, Lake Lindero and Liberty Canyon. Tell us about gates or HOA parking rules when you call so we can plan where to set up.

Should I ask a locksmith for a license?

Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you can ask any locksmith for the number and check it with the state before they start work. You can also reach us through our contact page if you want to ask questions before booking.
