What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Agoura Hills usually need?

Mercedes key trouble in Agoura Hills shows up in a handful of forms, and the right fix depends almost entirely on the year and chassis of the car. That is why the first thing we ask for is the model, the approximate year, and ideally the VIN.

Where it happens matters too. Agoura Hills grew up along the Ventura Freeway corridor, and daily life here runs on cars. Townhome and condo residents near Kanan Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard often park in shared lots or garages, and a lockout near Whizin Market Square usually happens far from the spare key sitting in a kitchen drawer. In Old Agoura, the larger equestrian lots mean the car may be parked by the barn or a long walk from the house, with the key in a jacket pocket you left inside. And if you drive a Mercedes to an office or shop along the Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Kanan Road corridors, a dead or missing key at the end of the workday is a different kind of problem than one in your own driveway.

The requests we hear most often for Mercedes-Benz fall into these groups:

  • A spare key made while you still have a working one, which is the easiest and most economical time to do it
  • A worn SmartKey that no longer syncs with the car
  • A fob that has gone dead, with remote buttons failing first and then a 'key not detected' message on Keyless-Go cars
  • A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
  • A car that will not recognize the key or will not let it turn
  • A lockout, with the key inside the car
  • All keys lost

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

Agoura Hills is about 28 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, so this is a mobile job: a van comes to you at your home, your workplace, or wherever the car is parked. The phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year, at (213) 577-1366.

Here is how a typical visit goes. The details change with the car, but the order does not.

  1. You call and tell us the model, the year, and what has happened: lost key, worn key, lockout, or a car that will not start. If you can read us the VIN from the lower corner of the windshield, we can tell you much sooner which system the car uses.
  2. We tell you plainly whether your car is one we can serve or one that has to go through the dealer. If it is a dealer-only case, we say so on the phone rather than driving out to find out.
  3. On arrival we confirm ownership. Expect to show ID and proof the car is yours, such as registration.
  4. We read the car's ignition system, over infrared or the OBD port depending on the model, and confirm the key system by VIN.
  5. We generate and program the new key, and on some chassis connect a steering-lock emulator first. We then test every function: starting, locking, unlocking, and the emergency blade.
  6. We go over what you have, how many keys now work, and anything the car was showing that might point to a different fault, such as a failing ignition module.

Which Mercedes key do you have? The key eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes-Benz we work on uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. The meaningful split is between two generations of the car's key system, called FBS3 and FBS4, and it decides whether we can help.

FBS3 runs from the late 1990s through roughly 2014. These are the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey styles that insert into the electronic ignition, known as the EIS or EZS, and twist. The key and the car swap rolling codes over infrared, so there is no simple clone-able chip the way there is on some other brands. That does not make the job impossible. It means the work is done by reading the ignition module, calculating the key password, and generating a new key with professional tools.

FBS4 came in on a rolling, model-by-model schedule rather than one date. The facelifted W212 E-Class got it from April 2013 production, the CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014, and the newer platforms had it from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), the 2015 C-Class (W205), the 2016 GLC (X253), and the 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

The gray area is the W166 ML and GLE. Most stayed on FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So for a late ML or GLE we do not assume. We confirm by VIN.

  • FBS3 (roughly late 1990s to 2014, plus most W166 ML/GLE through 2019 once confirmed by VIN): generally serviceable by us, including all keys lost
  • FBS4 (approximately 2015 onward, earlier on some models): effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys
  • Late W212, CLA/GLA, and W166 cars: confirmed by VIN, not by guesswork

What if I have lost every Mercedes key?

All keys lost is where honesty matters most, because the answer splits cleanly by system.

On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is a job we can do. The tools used for this work, such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and Autel IM-series units, read the ignition module and calculate the key password online. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a steering-lock emulator, called an ESL or ELV emulator, is needed as part of the process. That adds steps to the visit, and we tell you so before we start.

On an FBS4 car, a lost key is effectively a dealer job. The replacement key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled, so expect a multi-day wait. A few specialists are starting to offer limited FBS4 capability, but it is not something we would ask you to count on.

We handle key security through Mercedes' own dealer authorization process on these cars, not the route familiar from domestic brands. If your car is FBS4, we will not pretend otherwise. We can still help with the parts of the problem around it, such as getting into the car, advising what the dealer will want from you, and checking whether the issue is really the key at all. Is it really the key? Problems that mimic a bad Mercedes key

Some of the calls we get are not key failures at all. On Mercedes, several faults feel like a bad key, and it saves money to know the difference before anyone cuts or programs anything.

The electronic steering lock is the best-known example. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, the steering lock motor can fail. The dash wakes up, the car acts as if it sees the key, but the key will not turn. A new key does not fix it. A failed or worn EIS/EZS ignition can produce the same symptom: a key that is not recognized or will not turn.

Other common issues are more ordinary:

  • SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use, a case where a new key does help
  • Dead fob batteries, where remote buttons die first and then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'
  • Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades
  • On FBS4 cars, a lost key that becomes a VIN-coded dealer order with a multi-day wait, so plan ahead

How much does Mercedes-Benz key replacement cost in Agoura Hills?

We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car. Here is what moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you get from us or anyone else.

The biggest factor is the key system. An FBS3 car that we can program at the curb is a very different job from an FBS4 car that must be ordered from Mercedes. The second factor is whether you have a working key. Making a spare from a working key is usually the more economical route compared with starting from all keys lost, which needs more steps and more equipment.

Other factors include whether the chassis needs a steering-lock emulator, the type of key itself, such as a Chrome key versus a newer style, how many keys you want, and whether the real problem is a failed ignition or steering-lock component instead of the key. Time of day and the distance to your location play a part as well, since this is a mobile service. If all you need is a battery or a shell, that is a lighter job than a full key.

The most useful thing you can do is call with the VIN. We can usually tell you which path you are on and what the main cost drivers will be before anyone leaves the shop. For a broader look at how this works across brands, see car key replacement in Agoura Hills.

Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: which makes sense?

It is a fair question, and the answer is not always us.

For FBS4 cars, the dealer is the realistic route for added or replacement keys. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN, the car has to be registered in Xentry, and a locksmith cannot shortcut that. If you drive a 2015 or newer C-Class, a 2016 or newer GLC, a 2014 or newer S-Class, or a 2017 or newer E-Class, plan on the dealer and the wait that comes with it.

For FBS3 cars, a specialist locksmith can often do the same work at your location, which saves towing a car with no key to a dealer. That matters most when you are stuck in a parking lot or a garage and the alternative is a flatbed. A mobile visit also lets you sort out spares at the same time.

If you are not sure which side your car falls on, call. We would rather tell you to go to the dealer than send a van for a job we cannot do.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Mercedes?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans on the road. When you call, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it, including us, before work begins. If you only need a lockout opened, see our car lockout service in Agoura Hills. If the fob is the issue, our page on key fob replacement in Agoura Hills covers that.

Mercedes-Benz key service around Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills sits in an inland valley next to the Conejo Valley, with hot, dry summers and strong Santa Ana winds through the canyons. A lockout in that heat is more than an inconvenience, especially if you have passengers waiting, so we treat those calls with urgency. We serve the whole city, ZIP code 91301, and the neighborhoods around it, including Old Agoura, Morrison Ranch, Lake Lindero, Liberty Canyon, Fountainwood, Forest Cove, Hillrise, and Annandale.

Most homes here are 1960s to 1980s ranch and two-story tracts, with townhomes and condos near Kanan Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Several neighborhoods, such as Lake Lindero and Morrison Ranch, operate under HOAs, and Old Agoura keeps larger equestrian lots and older rural homes. In practice that means a Mercedes may be in a garage, a shared lot, a long driveway, or beside a barn, and we come to wherever it is. We can also meet you near Whizin Market Square, Chumash Park, or an office along Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

The city sits in a wildland-urban interface, and some housing was rebuilt after the 2018 Woolsey Fire. If you are replacing keys along with other things after a move or a rebuild, we can talk through the whole picture. See our Agoura Hills locksmith page for everything we do locally, or Mercedes-Benz key service overall and our car key overview for other makes. Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key in Agoura Hills if I have lost every key?

On an FBS3 car, roughly late 1990s through 2014 and most W166 ML/GLE through 2019 once confirmed by VIN, yes. Some chassis, like the W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212, also need a steering-lock emulator. On FBS4 cars, a lost key is effectively a dealer order, and we will tell you that on the phone.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Year helps, but it is not enough. FBS4 arrived on a model-by-model schedule, and late W166 cars can fall either way. The VIN settles it. Give us the VIN and the model, and we will tell you which path your car is on before anyone drives out.

Will you be able to program a key for a newer C-Class or GLC?

The 2015 C-Class (W205) and the 2016 GLC (X253) use FBS4 from launch, and added or replacement keys for FBS4 are effectively dealer-only. The dealer orders a key coded to your VIN, with proof of ownership. We will say so rather than promise something we cannot do.

My dash lights up, but the key will not turn. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed steering-lock motor can mimic a bad key. A worn or failed EIS/EZS ignition can do the same. We diagnose first so you do not pay for a key that will not fix it.

My Mercedes says 'key not detected.' Is the key dead?

Often it is just the fob battery. On Keyless-Go cars, remote buttons usually fail first, then the car stops detecting the key. A battery is a lighter fix than a full key. If a fresh battery does not help, the key may have stopped syncing from wear.

What do I need to show to get a key made?

Proof the car is yours: ID and registration are the usual items. We ask for this on every key job, and the dealer asks for it too when it orders an FBS4 key coded to your VIN.

How long is the dealer wait for an FBS4 key?

Expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN, and Mercedes' own bulletin requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. If you have one working key, make a spare before you need it.

Do you come to my home or office in Agoura Hills?

Yes. This is mobile service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout Agoura Hills, ZIP 91301. Call (213) 577-1366 with the model and VIN, and we will tell you what to expect.

Are you a licensed locksmith?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith, us included, for the number and check it with the state before work begins. A company that hesitates to give it to you is a red flag.
