What makes a lock high security?
A standard pin-tumbler cylinder, the kind on most doors built in the 1950s and 60s, depends on a handful of simple pins and a key any hardware store can copy. A high security cylinder does the same basic job, but it adds the features that make quick, quiet attacks harder: tighter machining, specially shaped security pins that fight a pick, hardened inserts that resist drilling, and a key profile that is restricted so blanks are not sold over the counter.
When we talk with customers about high security locks, three things matter most:
You will also see standards printed on packaging. ANSI/BHMA grades describe how well hardware holds up to use and abuse, and UL 437 covers resistance of key locks to picking, bumping and drilling. We read those marks when we choose hardware, but a rating is only a starting point. How the lock fits your particular door matters just as much as the label.
- Pick resistance: internal parts designed to give false feedback and to bind in ways that frustrate a pick.
- Bump resistance: pin and sidebar designs that blunt the bump-key technique, which relies on a standard cylinder being easy to jolt open.
- Key control: restricted keyways, so that copies are made only through the dealer or system owner, usually with identification or a registration card.
- Force resistance: hardened steel inserts and reinforced housings that make drilling and twisting attacks slower and noisier.
Why do Woodland Hills homes and businesses upgrade to high security locks?
The calls we hear usually fall into a few patterns. Someone has moved into a house and has no idea how many copies of the old key are out there. A contractor, a former roommate or a former employee still holds a key. A neighbor had a break-in and it got people thinking. Or an office has outgrown its keys and nobody can say who holds which one.
In those situations, a lock that cannot be casually copied or quietly defeated changes the picture. Home security locks make the most sense on the doors that matter most: the front door, the garage entry, and the side and back doors that are out of sight from the street. Commercial security locks do the same job for suites, back offices and storage rooms where the key list tends to grow over the years.
We will also be straight about the limits. A cylinder is one weak point among several. A door kicked in at the frame, a hollow door with a thin jamb, or a sliding glass door with a weak latch will beat the finest cylinder made. Part of our job is telling you where a high security lock is the right spend and where the money is better used on the door, strike or frame.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we install a high security lock, step by step?
Every job is a little different, but the sequence is consistent. You can call at any hour, since the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock.
- You call and tell us what you have and what worries you: the door type, the current lock, how many people hold keys, and whether this is planned work or something that happened tonight.
- We ask a few questions about the door itself: wood, metal or glass, its thickness, whether it has a single deadbolt or a combined handle set, and whether it has been sticking or rubbing.
- We look at the whole opening on site, not only the lock. That means the door edge, the frame, the strike plate, the hinges and how the bolt lines up with the strike.
- We recommend the approach that fits. Sometimes that is swapping in high security cylinders on hardware that is still sound. Sometimes it is a full new deadbolt. If a simple rekey is all you need, we say so.
- We install the hardware, reinforce the strike with longer screws that reach the framing behind the trim, and fix any alignment problem so the bolt throws freely.
- We test every key, cycle the bolt many times with the door open and closed, and explain how the restricted key system works, including who can authorize extra keys.
- We walk you through key control. If your system comes with a registration card or ID requirement, we explain what to keep safe and what to do if a key is lost.
What affects the cost of high security lock replacement?
We do not publish numbers on a web page because the honest answer depends on your door and your goals. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down, so the quote you get makes sense.
One more point on cost: upgrading cylinders in sound hardware is often the more economical route compared with replacing every lockset. But if the existing deadbolt is worn, loose or badly aligned, putting a premium cylinder in it wastes money, and we will say so before we start.
- The lock system itself. Restricted-key systems with stronger patent protection and tighter key control cost more than basic pick-resistant cylinders.
- How many cylinders and whether they should be keyed alike. A house with front, side and garage doors on one key is a different job from one door.
- Door preparation. A door already drilled for a standard deadbolt is simple. A door that needs new boring, a patched old hole, or reinforcement takes more work and materials.
- Door and frame condition. Warped doors, worn strikes or loose jambs may need repair so the new lock works properly.
- Parts availability. Some restricted systems are stocked, while others must be ordered or set up through the manufacturer's key-control program.
- Key count and extra keys, especially for offices with many key holders.
- Timing and location. Planned work during the day is different from an after-hours emergency call, and distance within our service area is part of the picture.

Call (213) 577-1366Do pick-resistant and bump-resistant locks actually stop break-ins?
They stop a specific, common kind of break-in: covert entry by someone with a pick set or a bump key. Against those methods, a good high security cylinder asks for far more skill, time and noise than a standard cylinder does. For many burglars that is enough to move on.
What they do not do is make a door impregnable. Bump-resistant locks are not automatically pick-resistant, and the reverse is true, so it matters which features a given cylinder really has. Determined attackers can also go through the weaker parts of an opening: the door's hinge side, a thin jamb, glass panels near the lock, or a window beside the door.
For that reason we treat the lock as part of a system. A pick-resistant deadbolt, a reinforced strike, solid hinges and a door that closes squarely together are far stronger than any single expensive part. For offices, add key control: a master key system built on a restricted keyway lets you give each person the access they need without handing out copies of a universal key.
How does Woodland Hills heat affect high security hardware?
Woodland Hills regularly records some of the hottest summer temperatures in Los Angeles, and long stretches of heat bake south- and west-facing doors. In older housing the practical results are familiar: wood doors expand and warp, weatherstripping dries out and shrinks, and a deadbolt that lined up perfectly years ago starts to drift against the strike.
This matters for high security locks in a way people do not expect. A premium cylinder does not fix a door that has moved. If the bolt drags on the strike, you end up forcing the key, and that wears the lock and tempts people to leave it unlocked. So before installing, we check how the door closes in its current condition, and we adjust or reposition the strike where needed.
A simple test you can do yourself: on a hot afternoon, close the door gently and see whether the bolt extends fully without lifting or pushing the door. If it only works when you shoulder the door, call us before upgrading anything. The fix may be an alignment correction first and a new lock second.
Where do we install high security locks around Woodland Hills?
Woodland Hills covers a lot of different housing, and the right security plan changes with it. Whether you are in 91364 or 91367, the first thing we look at is how the property is laid out and who holds keys.
In Warner Center, the condo towers and large apartment complexes use controlled-entry systems, and many are HOA-managed. Upgrading a unit's entry door lock to a pick-resistant, restricted-key cylinder is a common request there, but building rules often decide what you may change. Check with your management first, because the exterior-facing hardware and the building's own entry system are usually theirs, not yours.
North of Ventura Boulevard, the 1950s-60s ranch tracts and the large-lot, semi-rural feel of Walnut Acres mean many side and back doors sit well away from the street and out of neighbors' view. Those are the doors worth upgrading first. The same goes for older homes in Carlton Terrace, College Acres and the Girard Tract: if the original cylinders are still in place and nobody knows how many copies exist, restricted-key cylinders are a clean way to start fresh.
South of the Boulevard, the hillside streets carry mid-century and custom view homes, many behind driveway gates. A high security front door lock is only half the story there. If the gate lock is weak or the gate does not latch, the lock behind it matters less, so we often look at gate lock repair at the same visit. Some hillside owners also want keypad or app access on top of a high security cylinder, which we cover under smart lock installation.
Along the Ventura Boulevard business corridor, office suites tend to accumulate keys over the years. High security cylinders with restricted keyways pair well with a proper key list and are the foundation of our commercial locksmith work in the area.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for high security locks?
We have been in business since 1987, and that history shows in how we approach a door: we look at the whole opening, not just the part you asked about. We work from a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and run mobile service vans, so we can handle both planned installs and urgent calls across the 140 cities we serve in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Woodland Hills included.
We are one company. There is no dispatch middleman who hands your job to whichever stranger is closest, so the person who advises you is part of the same operation that does the work. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and that is why a recommendation from us tends to match what we would put on our own doors.
If you are locked out or exposed tonight, say a door was forced and needs securing, start with our emergency locksmith service. We can get the opening secure first, and then talk through a proper high security upgrade when you have had time to think.
What should you ask any high security locksmith?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) locksmith company license, known as an LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it, us included, before they start work on a lock that protects your home or business. A company that dodges the question is telling you something.
A few other questions are worth asking:
- Which exact cylinder or system are you proposing, and what is it resistant to: picking, bumping, drilling or all three?
- Is the keyway restricted, and how are extra keys authorized?
- What will you check on the door, strike and frame, and what will you do if it is out of alignment?
- Who will do the work, and will the same company stand behind the visit?
- What does the quote include, and what could change it once the door is opened up?
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a high security lock and a regular deadbolt?
A regular deadbolt often uses a standard cylinder that can be picked or bumped with common tools, and its keys can be copied anywhere. A high security lock uses a cylinder designed to resist picking, bumping and drilling, and usually a restricted key that cannot be freely duplicated. The bolt and strike installation also matter, so we check the door as well as the lock.
Can you upgrade my existing locks, or do I need new hardware?
Often we can fit high security cylinders into hardware that is still in good condition, which is usually the more economical route. If the existing deadbolt is worn, loose, or misaligned from heat and door movement, replacing the whole unit is the better choice. We tell you which applies after looking at the door.
Are bump-resistant locks also pick-resistant?
Not automatically. Bumping and picking attack the cylinder in different ways, and some designs address one better than the other. When you buy high security locks, ask what the specific cylinder resists, and look for recognized markings such as UL 437. We explain what each option we propose actually covers.
Can restricted keys be copied?
It depends on the system. Restricted keyways mean blanks are not sold openly, and copies are typically made only through an authorized dealer, often with ID or a registration card. That is the point of key control. For what is and is not possible with your key, see our key duplication information or call us.
Can I install high security locks in my Warner Center condo or apartment?
Often yes for your own unit entry door, but many Warner Center buildings are HOA-managed with controlled-entry systems, and rules may limit what you can change or require that management keeps a key. Check with your association or landlord first, then call us with the details so we can propose hardware that fits.
Will a high security cylinder work with a smart lock?
Sometimes. Some smart locks keep a mechanical key cylinder as a backup, and in some cases that cylinder can be a pick-resistant one. Compatibility depends on the model, so we confirm it against the actual lock before we order or install anything.
Does a high security lock make my door burglar-proof?
No lock does. A high security cylinder makes covert attacks much harder, but forced entry through a weak frame, thin jamb, glass panel or sliding door can still work. We look at the whole opening and tell you plainly where reinforcement will do more good than another lock.
What happens if I lose my restricted key?
Call us. If you still have your registration or ID information, the system's key-control process lets an authorized replacement be made. If the key may be in the wrong hands, we can rekey the cylinder so the lost key no longer works, which is often better than just ordering a copy.
Do you handle high security locks for offices on Ventura Boulevard?
Yes. We can install restricted-key cylinders on suite doors and back offices, and build a key structure so each person gets the access they need. Larger setups may call for a master key system, and we plan that with you before changing any hardware.
