What counts as a high security lock?
A standard builder-grade cylinder keeps honest people honest. A high security lock is built to resist the ways a door actually gets defeated: picking, bumping, drilling, forcing or pulling the cylinder, and unauthorized key copying. Three things separate the two. They are the internal design of the cylinder, the materials around it, and control over who can make a key.
Inside a pick-resistant cylinder you will typically find tighter tolerances and security pins shaped to catch and false-set under a pick. Many designs add a second locking element, such as a sidebar or a rotating component, that has to be satisfied at the same time as the pins. Bump-resistant designs change how the pins or locking elements react to the sudden force of a bump key, so the old trick of tapping every pin into place stops working. Hardened steel inserts add protection against drilling and cylinder pulling.
The third piece is the restricted key. A restricted keyway uses blanks that are not sold over the counter, and copies can only be cut by an authorized source. That matters more than most people expect. A lock that resists picking but whose key can be duplicated at any self-serve kiosk still has a hole in it. It also changes how key duplication works for you: copies come through an authorized channel, which is slower than a hardware-store machine but is the whole point of the system.
Is a high security lock worth it for a Willowbrook home or business?
Sometimes the honest answer is that a new cylinder is not the first thing your door needs. A pick-resistant cylinder does nothing if the strike plate is held by short screws, the door frame is split, or there is a pane of glass an arm's length from the knob. Before we recommend hardware, we look at the whole door: slab, frame, strike, hinges, and whatever is already installed. If the cheaper fix is a reinforced strike and longer screws, we will say so.
Where a high security cylinder does earn its place is when key control is the real problem or the door protects something that matters. These are the situations where we most often recommend one:
- You have lived or worked somewhere for years and have no idea how many copies of the key exist.
- A tenant, employee, or contractor with a key has moved on and you want that key to stop mattering.
- There are tool marks, a scarred cylinder face, or other signs someone has already tried the lock.
- The door protects medications, equipment, records, cash, or a home office.
- You want copies to require your authorization instead of anyone with a key and a machine.

Call (213) 577-1366Pick-resistant, bump-resistant, and restricted keys: what you actually get
The marketing around these terms can get slippery, so here is how we use them. No lock is impossible to defeat given enough time and tools, and we will never tell you otherwise. What a good high security lock does is raise the skill, time, noise, and equipment required, and take the quick, quiet methods off the table.
- Pick-resistant locks: security pins, tighter tolerances, and often a secondary locking mechanism make manipulation with picks far harder than on a standard cylinder.
- Bump-resistant locks: the cylinder is designed so a bump key does not transfer energy to the pins the way it does in a basic lock.
- Drill and pull resistance: hardened inserts and a reinforced cylinder body slow down attacks aimed at destroying the lock instead of opening it.
- Restricted keys: protected blanks and authorized-only duplication, so key control stays with you.
- Door grade matters too: for deadbolts and handle sets we look at ANSI/BHMA grading, because the cylinder is only one part of the lock body.
How we handle a high security lock installation or replacement
The process is the same whether it is a single front door or a row of clinic doors. It is simple, and we keep you in the loop at each stage.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what the door protects, what is on it now, and what prompted the change.
- We look at the door, frame, strike plate, and existing hardware before recommending anything. If the problem is the frame and not the cylinder, we tell you.
- We recommend a level of protection and a key system, and explain what each option does and does not stop.
- We remove the old hardware and fit the new cylinder or full deadbolt installation, reinforcing the strike and fasteners where the door needs it.
- We cut and test your keys, set up the restricted key authorization, and make sure everyone who should be on it is on it.
- We test the lock repeatedly with the door open and closed, hand over the keys, and explain how to order additional copies.
What affects the cost of high security lock installation?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the right figure depends on your door. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down, so nothing surprises you on the phone.
- The lock itself: a restricted-keyway, multi-element cylinder costs more than a basic pick-resistant upgrade, and higher-grade deadbolts and handle sets cost more than lighter ones.
- How many cylinders: one front door is a very different job from a building with several entrances.
- Keyed alike or separate: matching several doors to one key, or building a hierarchy of keys, adds planning and cutting work.
- Swap or modification: replacing a cylinder in a door that is already prepared is the lighter-cost path. Drilling a new bore or fixing a damaged door takes more labor.
- Door and frame condition: reinforcement, new strikes, or repairing splintered wood add parts and time.
- Number of restricted keys: each authorized key is cut and registered, so a larger key count means more work.
- When and where: after-hours calls and distance from our base can affect the total. Willowbrook is about 18 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we serve it with mobile vans.
- If your current lock is in good shape and the only issue is who holds keys, lock rekeying is usually the more economical route. We will say so when it applies.

Call (213) 577-1366Home security locks versus commercial security locks
For a house, home security locks usually mean a high security deadbolt on the main entry, a matching cylinder on any secondary doors, and a properly anchored strike. Many owners want the whole house on one restricted key. Our residential locksmith work covers that, including keeping existing handle sets when they are worth keeping.
Commercial security locks bring a different set of questions: who needs access, who should not, and how often that changes. A clinic, office, or shop has staff who come and go, and the lock has to survive heavy daily use. Restricted keys give you real control over who can duplicate a key. For a building with several doors, our commercial locksmith service can pair high security cylinders with a master key system so each person carries only the key they need while you keep a master. We design the key hierarchy before we cut anything, because fixing it afterward is the expensive way to do it.
High security locks around Willowbrook
Willowbrook is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, and its housing is a mix. Many streets hold small single-family homes from the 1920s through the 1950s, and older properties often carry aging hardware: worn deadbolts, loose strikes, and keys that have been copied many times over. Security screen doors are common, and they are worth a look when we upgrade, because the screen door's latch is a separate weak point from the main door. A high security cylinder on the inside door and a solid strike usually do more good than any single fancy part. Newer county-supported affordable and senior housing has gone up around the revitalized Martin Luther King Jr. medical campus, and multifamily buildings cluster near the transit and commercial corridors, where shared entries and key control become the bigger concern.
The Martin Luther King Jr. medical campus district along 120th Street is where commercial high security work makes the most sense. Medical offices and clinics deal with staff turnover and areas that need limited access, so restricted keys and a planned key hierarchy matter. The Wilmington Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard corridors are lined with storefronts, where a pick-resistant cylinder on the back door is often the first upgrade worth making. We also work along the Imperial Highway corridor and around the Rosa Parks Station area. Whether the address falls in 90059, 90061, or 90222, the process is the same: look at the door first, then recommend.
One local note that works in your favor: Willowbrook is a flat plain with a morning marine layer and mild temperatures, and salt-air corrosion is not a significant factor this far inland. You do not need to pay extra for specialty marine finishes. Pick the lock on security and key control, not weather.

How to vet any high security locksmith
California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Locksmith Company (LCO) license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work starts, and check it with BSIS. Be careful with anyone who will not give you a company name, quotes a suspiciously low number without seeing the door, or insists on drilling out a lock that could be opened without damage. A real high security job starts with questions about your door, not a rush to sell hardware.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a lock completely bump-proof or pick-proof?
No honest locksmith can. What we install are bump-resistant and pick-resistant cylinders that make those methods far harder and slower. The strongest cylinder still depends on the door, the frame, and the strike plate around it, so we check all of that.
Do I need to replace my whole deadbolt, or just the cylinder?
It depends on the deadbolt. If the body is sound and the door is prepared for it, a cylinder swap is the lighter-cost option. If the hardware is worn, low-grade, or damaged, replacing the whole lock makes more sense. We look at it before recommending either.
Can restricted keys be copied at a hardware store?
Not in the normal way. Restricted keys use protected blanks and authorized duplication, so copies go through an approved source instead of a self-serve machine. That is the main benefit, and it also means getting extra keys takes a bit more planning.
Will a high security lock work on my older Willowbrook house?
Usually yes. Many homes here date from the 1920s to the 1950s, and the doors can be fitted with modern cylinders and deadbolts. Sometimes the door or frame needs some reinforcement first, and we will tell you if it does.
Can you do something about my security screen door?
Security screen doors are common in Willowbrook, and we can look at the latch and hardware as part of the visit. The screen door is a separate weak point from your main entry, so we treat them as two doors, not one.
Do you handle high security locks for clinics and offices near the medical campus?
Yes. For clinics and medical offices we can fit pick-resistant cylinders with restricted keys and plan a key hierarchy for staff access. We map out who needs which doors before cutting any keys.
What happens if I lose a restricted key?
Call us. Because duplication is controlled, the key can only be replaced through an authorized source. If you are worried about who now has the lost key, we can also rekey or replace the cylinder so the old key no longer works.
Can you come out at night or on weekends?
Our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us what you need, and we will explain what we can do right away and what is better handled with a planned visit.
Is rekeying enough, or do I need a high security lock?
Rekeying changes which key works in a lock you already own. That solves lost-key and old-tenant problems at a lighter cost. A high security lock is for when you also want resistance to picking, bumping, and unauthorized copying. We will tell you honestly which fits.
