Why won't my gate lock?
A gate that won't lock is usually one of a few things, and most of them are not the lock itself. The latch bolt no longer lines up with the strike. The gate has sagged on its hinges. The mechanism is packed with grit and rust. Or a keypad has lost power. The first part of any call is working out which of those it is, because replacing a lock when the real problem is a dropped gate just means a second call a month later.
A gate is a hard place for hardware. It sits outside, takes sprinkler spray, gets slammed by kids and wind, and is the one lock on the property people ignore until it fails. A side gate that won't latch is more than an annoyance. It is an open path to the back of the house, to bikes, tools and meters, and for many households to a yard where pets or small children play.
This page covers pedestrian gates, side gates, and driveway gate locks: the latch, the lock body, the keypad or electronic lock, and the strike or catch they work against. If your problem is the front door instead, our residential locksmith page is the better starting point.
What gate lock problems do we repair?
Most gate calls fall into a short list. Nearly all of them can be fixed on site, because our vans carry the common latches, lock bodies and strikes for outdoor use.
- Gate won't lock or won't stay latched, often from misalignment or a worn latch
- Gate latch repair on thumb latches, gravity latches and spring-loaded latches that stick or fail to catch
- Key turns but the bolt doesn't move, or the key won't turn at all because of corrosion or debris
- Keypad gate lock that ignores codes, shows dead buttons, or has a failed battery or water damage
- Electronic gate lock or electric strike that clicks but doesn't release, or stays released
- Broken, bent or cut-off locks after someone forced the gate
- Lost keys or a code that too many people know, which calls for a rekey or a new lock
- Gate lock installation where there was never a real lock, only a hook, a bolt, or a padlock hasp
How we handle a gate lock repair, step by step
We keep the process simple and we explain each decision, so you can tell what is a real need and what is a choice.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and talk to a person. We ask what kind of gate it is (wood, wrought iron, aluminum, chain link), whether it is a walk-through gate or a driveway gate, and what the lock is doing.
- A technician comes to the property in a mobile van with outdoor-rated hardware on board.
- We look at the whole gate before touching the lock: hinges, post movement, how the latch meets the strike, and whether the gate swings freely and closes under its own weight.
- We tell you what we found and whether repair or replacement makes more sense, and what each route involves before any work starts.
- We do the work: realign, clean and lubricate with the right product for outdoor use, replace a worn part, or fit a new lock.
- We test the gate repeatedly, open and closed, from both sides, and with keys or codes. For electronic locks we also check power and release behavior.
- We hand over keys or codes, show you how it works, and tell you what maintenance it needs.

Call (213) 577-1366Should I repair or replace the gate lock, and what about keypad or smart options?
Repair is usually the more economical route when the lock is basically sound and something has drifted: a strike that needs moving, a latch that needs cleaning, a spring that has given out. Replacement makes sense when the lock body is corroded through, parts are no longer available, the gate was forced, or the lock never suited the gate. A gate lock replacement is also the moment to rethink how you use the gate.
A keypad gate lock removes keys from the equation. It suits a side gate shared by family, dog walkers, cleaners and contractors, because you can change the code instead of collecting keys. The tradeoffs are batteries, and a code that needs changing once in a while. Look for a model rated for outdoor exposure, not an indoor keypad in a plastic shell.
An electronic gate lock, such as an electric strike or a magnetic lock, is a different job. It needs power at the gate, and it needs a way to release, whether that is a keypad, a remote, or an intercom. For a smart gate lock installation, we first check what connectivity the spot can reasonably support, since a gate at the edge of a lot may sit well outside your Wi-Fi. Our smart lock installation page covers smart locks in more depth, and if you want a full entry system with multiple users and logs, see access control installation.
If the gate is a pool barrier, self-closing and self-latching behavior matters, and requirements can vary by jurisdiction. Tell us about it at the start and we will choose hardware with that in mind.
What makes a weather-resistant gate lock actually hold up?
Outdoor locks fail from moisture, dust, temperature swings, and neglect. A good outdoor gate lock is built from materials that tolerate that: stainless steel, solid brass, or heavy coated finishes, with sealed or shielded keyways and internal parts that do not rust. Cheap plated hardware looks fine on the shelf and seizes within a season or two.
Placement matters as much as the product. A lock mounted where a sprinkler hits it every morning will wear out sooner. Wood gates swell and shrink through the year, so a latch needs some adjustment room. Where we can, we fit hardware with a bit of tolerance, because a latch with zero slack will bind the first rainy week.
Keypads and electronics add another consideration. Seals, drainage, and a protected battery compartment matter as much as the buttons. We will tell you plainly when a product we can fit is a better outdoor choice than the one you were considering.

Call (213) 577-1366Where does gate lock work end and gate operator work begin?
Driveway gates come in two parts: the lock or latch, and the operator, which is the motor and controller that swing or slide the gate. We handle the lock side and the access side, including keypads, strikes and release hardware. If the operator motor, track, or control board is the failing part, that is usually a gate operator specialist's work, and we will say so instead of guessing.
The two often overlap in practice. A driveway gate that doesn't close fully may be a latch problem or an operator limit problem. We check the lock end first and tell you what we see, so whoever handles the rest starts with real information. If a general lock fix is all you need, our lock repair service covers that across the property.
What affects the cost of gate lock repair?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because gate jobs vary too much for a number to mean anything. These are the real factors:
- Repair or replacement: adjusting or freeing up an existing latch is a lighter job than fitting new hardware
- Type of lock: a basic latch, a keyed lock, a keypad lock, and an electric lock are all very different products and labor
- Gate material: steel, aluminum, wood and chain link each need different mounting, and some gates need drilling, welding-free brackets or reinforcement
- Electrical work: power to the gate, wiring runs, and release controls add time and parts
- Number of gates and keys, and whether you want them all keyed alike
- Condition of the gate itself: a sagging or racked gate may need fixing before any lock will work
- Timing and distance: after-hours calls and travel to your location can affect the price
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for gate locks?
We have been in business since 1987. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and when a job is odd or hard he is the one we turn to. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a real shop behind the van that shows up at your gate.
When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a call center that sells your job to whoever picks it up. There are no dispatch middlemen. That is how we can tell you what the job really involves before anyone arrives.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you hire for it. It is a fair question, and a reputable company will answer it plainly.

Call (213) 577-1366Gate lock repair around Whittier
Whittier sits against the Puente Hills and runs warmer than the coastal plain. Santa Ana winds periodically push hot, dry air across the hillsides, and the wet-winter, dry-summer cycle swells and shrinks wood. For gates, that means wooden side gates that bind in the rainy months and gap in dry weeks, latches that rattle loose after a windy stretch, and keypad batteries that have to deal with heat. We bring those patterns into how we choose and adjust hardware here.
Older neighborhoods bring their own issues. Around College Hills and Uptown Whittier, Craftsman and Victorian-era homes were built with original hardware, and the gate latch can be just as old as the door lock. We repair and match vintage pieces where that makes sense, and fit modern outdoor-rated hardware where it doesn't. In Friendly Hills and Rideout Heights, the larger custom hillside homes often come with gates at different levels of the lot, so we think carefully about where a keypad goes and whether its code should match anything else on the property. When we rekey a home in those areas, we can include the gate lock so one key covers both, and our lock rekey service explains how that works.
East Whittier's mid-century ranch tracts tend to have side-yard gates that see heavy daily use, which is exactly where a worn latch shows up first. Apartment stock near Uptown and along Whittier Boulevard often has shared pedestrian gates that many people use, so access control and code changes come up more there. We serve all of Whittier, ZIP codes 90601 through 90606, from Michigan Park to Murphy Ranch to the Whittwood area.
Whittier is roughly 24 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we serve it with our mobile vans. If a gate won't latch at night and you can't leave the property open, call us through our 24/7 emergency locksmith line and we will tell you what is realistic for your situation.
Frequently asked questions
My side gate won't latch after the rain. Is the lock broken?
Usually not. Wood swells in wet weather and the latch no longer lines up with the strike. The fix is often moving the strike or adjusting the latch, not replacing it. We check the hinges and gate position first so the repair lasts after the wood dries out again.
Can you repair a driveway gate lock, or only walk-through gates?
We work on both. We handle the lock, latch, keypad and release hardware on driveway gates and pedestrian gates. If the problem is the gate operator motor or controller, that is a separate specialty and we will tell you so after looking at it.
Is a keypad gate lock a good idea for a side gate?
For a side gate that several people use, it often is. You can change the code instead of chasing down keys. Pick one that is rated for outdoor use, and expect to change batteries now and then. We can install one and set it up with you.
Can my gate use the same key as my front door?
In many cases, yes. If the gate lock accepts a compatible cylinder, we can key it to match your house locks. That is a common request during a rekey. We confirm what fits on site, since some gate locks use different hardware.
What if I forgot the code on my keypad gate lock?
Many keypad locks can be reset or reprogrammed, depending on the model. We will identify what you have, reset or replace as needed, and set a fresh code. Call (213) 577-1366 with the brand if you can see it on the lock.
How much does gate lock replacement cost?
It depends on the lock type, the gate material, whether wiring is needed, and how many gates are involved. Basic latches are a lighter job than electronic locks. We explain the factors on the phone and confirm what applies to your gate before work begins.
Do you come out at night or on weekends for a gate that won't lock?
Yes. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, at (213) 577-1366. If the gate leaves your property open, tell us. We will talk through what is practical, and we will give you a straight arrival estimate when you call.
How do I know a gate locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you can ask any locksmith for it before they start. Ask who will actually come to your property, and whether the quote is explained clearly. If answers are vague, keep looking. You can also reach us through our contact page.
