What is transponder key programming?

A transponder key looks like an ordinary car key, but the plastic head holds a small chip. When you turn the key or press the start button, the car's immobilizer sends a low-power signal, the chip answers with its code, and the engine is allowed to run only if that code is one the car already knows. Cut metal alone does nothing on these vehicles. A blade that fits the ignition but carries no recognized chip will turn the cylinder, and the engine still won't start.

Transponder key programming is the work of getting the car and a chip to recognize each other. That is why a hardware-store copy so often fails: the blade may be cut perfectly while the chip inside is blank or unregistered. If you've been searching for car key programming, chip key replacement or a duplicate transponder key, you're describing the same underlying job from different starting points. Only the circumstances differ: one key lost, every key lost, or a spare you want before trouble arrives.

It's also a separate matter from a remote fob. The lock and unlock buttons are one system and the immobilizer is another. Many keys combine both, and our key fob replacement page covers the remote side. This page stays with the chip and the immobilizer.

What happens when a chip key stops working or goes missing?

People reach us in a few recurring situations. The only key is gone. The key turns in the ignition but the engine won't start, and a security or key-shaped warning light stays on the dash. The chip has been damaged by a drop, a wash cycle or water. Or someone has one working key and wants a spare made before something goes wrong. All of these are normal, and most of them can be handled where the car is parked.

Not every no-start is a chip problem, though. A weak battery, a failing starter or a worn ignition can look identical from the driver's seat. Before we program anything, we try to work out which problem you actually have, because a new chip key won't repair a worn ignition. If the ignition turns out to be the culprit, that is a different job, and we'd point you toward ignition repair rather than sell you a key you don't need.

If you're also locked out of the car, say so when you call. Getting back inside is its own step, covered under car lockout service, and we can often handle both in one visit.

How do we program a transponder key, step by step?

The details change with the vehicle, but the shape of the job is the same every time.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour. We ask for the make, model and year, and whether you still have any working key.
  2. We confirm the vehicle by VIN and ask you to show that the car is yours. We would rather ask for registration and ID than program a key for someone who can't show ownership. It protects you as much as it protects us.
  3. We tell you what that particular vehicle needs: the chip type, whether a cut blade is involved, and what the programming will take. Where the information for a model is unclear or conflicting, we say so and confirm in person instead of guessing.
  4. A van comes to the car wherever it's parked. This is the same mobile locksmith service we run for other work, equipped for automotive jobs. In many cases the car doesn't need to be towed.
  5. We cut the blade if the key needs one, matched to your ignition and doors.
  6. We program the chip so the immobilizer recognizes it and, where the vehicle requires it, register it alongside the keys you already have.
  7. We test the result with you watching: start the engine, work the doors and check any remote functions. You see it work before we call the job done.

Transponder key replacement or a duplicate transponder key: what's the difference?

A duplicate transponder key is made while you still have a working key. The car already trusts you, so adding another chip is the more straightforward route and usually the more economical one. A transponder key replacement after every key is lost is a bigger job. There is no existing key to work from, so the car's system may need to be set up to accept a new key from scratch, and depending on the vehicle that can mean more equipment and more steps.

That gap is the best argument for making a spare early. Plenty of households in West Hills have two drivers and one chip key between them. If that sounds familiar, a duplicate now is a modest step compared with an all-keys-lost call later, usually at the worst possible hour.

If the key you've lost was your only one, our lost car key replacement page walks through that situation in detail. For the wider picture of how we replace car keys of all types, see car key replacement.

What affects the cost of car key programming in West Hills?

We don't print a number on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the vehicle in front of us. These are the factors that move the total:

  • Make, model and year. Some vehicles use simple chips, while others use more involved systems that take more equipment and more time.
  • Whether you have a working key. Duplicating from a working key is generally less work than starting from none.
  • Key type. A chip key with a traditional cut blade, a laser-cut blade and a push-button smart key are different parts with different costs.
  • How many keys you want. Doing two in one visit can be more economical than paying for separate trips.
  • Where the work happens. A van coming to your driveway or a parking lot is a different job from a stop at our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. If the car can be driven and you have a working key, bringing it in can be the lighter-cost option.
  • Whether the car needs towing or the dealer. This is rare, but it changes the picture when it applies.

When is the dealer the only option?

Some vehicles keep key programming behind manufacturer-controlled security. For certain makes and model years, the access needed is available only through the dealer, or requires parts that can only be ordered through them. We don't want to hand you a confident answer from a general web page when the situation changes by brand and by year, so we confirm by VIN and, when needed, with the car in front of us.

If your vehicle turns out to be a dealer-only case, we will tell you directly, even though it means we don't get the job. Calling first still saves you from paying for a visit that couldn't have worked, and you can plan the dealer trip with accurate information.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for chip key replacement?

We've been in business since 1987. We run a storefront in Westwood and a fleet of mobile service vans, and we are one company. The person who answers (213) 577-1366 belongs to the same operation that sends the van. We don't pass your call to a national dispatch center that resells the job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees our automotive work, and our automotive locksmith page shows the rest of what that covers.

One more thing worth knowing, whoever you call: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you're considering about it before they start work on your car. A legitimate company expects the question.

Transponder key programming across West Hills

West Hills is almost entirely residential, built mainly on 1950s-70s single-story ranch tracts, with larger and more private lots toward Valley Circle Boulevard and the hillside edge near Castle Peak. Most cars here sit in driveways and garages at detached homes rather than in shared apartment lots. A van working in the Platt Village area or on a quiet street in the Shadow Ranch Park area is usually just the car and the technician.

One scenario we see in this part of the Valley: a home lockout near the Fallbrook Center or the Platt Village shopping areas where the ring inside the house, or lost while out shopping, carries the only chip key. The door and the car then become two problems on one call. We can look at both. Another is a hillside household around the El Escorpion Park / Castle Peak area that has had one chip key for years and wants a duplicate before the next trip.

Both West Hills ZIP codes, 91307 and 91304, are roughly 23 miles from our Westwood storefront, and our vans travel to you, whether you're near Knapp Ranch Park, along the Sherman Way west corridor or out by Orcutt Ranch. We can also reach a vehicle in a parking lot, for instance near the UCLA West Valley Medical Center campus or Chaminade College Preparatory, not just a driveway.

Summers are hot in this far-west corner of the Valley, and being stuck with a car that won't start is a poor way to spend an afternoon. That's one reason the line is answered around the clock, and why we handle car calls at all hours through our 24-hour locksmith service.

What should you have ready when you call?

A few details make the first conversation faster and the answer more accurate:

  • The make, model and year of the car.
  • The VIN, found on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver's door jamb sticker.
  • Registration or ID showing the car is yours.
  • Every key you still have, including broken ones and old spares.
  • Where the car is, and whether it can be driven.
  • How many keys you want made, since doing them together can change the work involved.

Frequently asked questions

Can you program a transponder key for any car?

Not every vehicle, and we won't claim otherwise. Many can be done by a locksmith, but some makes and model years are dealer-only. We confirm by VIN, and if yours needs the dealer we tell you plainly.

Is a duplicate transponder key cheaper than a replacement?

Usually it's the more economical route. With a working key, the car already recognizes you, so adding another chip is less work. After all keys are lost, the job typically involves more steps and equipment. The exact total depends on the vehicle.

I lost every key I have. Can you still help in West Hills?

In many cases, yes. We come to the car, confirm the VIN and your ownership, and set up a new key from scratch. Some vehicles make that harder, and a few require the dealer. We'll say which applies to yours.

Can I buy a blank key online and have you program it?

Sometimes. The chip type must match your vehicle, and online blanks can turn out to be the wrong type or already locked to another car. Call us with your VIN before you buy so we can tell you what to look for.

Do you come to my home, or do I bring the car to you?

Either works. Our mobile vans travel to West Hills from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. If you have a working key and the car drives, bringing it to the storefront can be the lighter-cost option.

Do I need to prove the car is mine?

Yes. We ask for registration and ID and match them to the VIN. It's a normal step, and it keeps someone else from getting a working key to your car.

Will my old lost key still start the car after you program a new one?

It depends on the vehicle. On some, the old key can be removed from the car's memory; on others it can't. We'll tell you which applies to yours, so you know whether a lost key is still a risk.

Can I call at night or on weekends for car key programming?

Yes. We answer (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year, and a person picks up. Tell us the car's location and what you have, and we'll go from there.
