What usually goes wrong with a storefront door lock?
Storefront doors take more punishment than almost any other door in a building. They swing all day, get pushed open with shoulders and hand carts, and are locked by whoever closes up that night. Most of the trouble we are called for comes down to a short list of causes.
The tricky part is that the lock is often not the real culprit. A door that has sagged even a fraction of an inch will make a perfectly good lock seem broken. We look at the whole door before we touch the cylinder, because replacing a part that was never at fault wastes your money and your afternoon.
- The key turns but the bolt does not throw, usually because the door has dropped on its pivots and the hook bolt no longer lines up with the strike.
- The cylinder spins freely or the key will not come out, which points to a broken tailpiece or cam behind the face of the door.
- The inside thumbturn or paddle is loose, stripped, or snapped off.
- The lock only works if you lift or pull the door while turning the key, which is an alignment problem wearing a lock problem's clothes.
- A glass door's bottom-rail lock or patch fitting has loosened, or the keyway is simply worn out.
- Someone tried to force the door overnight and bent the latch, the strike, or the edge of the stile.
Why is narrow stile lock repair different from a regular door lock?
Aluminum storefront doors are built from hollow extruded frames. The vertical piece that carries the lock is called the stile, and on a narrow stile door it is only a couple of inches wide. There is almost no room inside it, so a standard residential deadbolt or a full-size commercial lock body does not fit.
Narrow stile hardware is made for that tight space: a slim mortise lock case, a hook bolt or deadlatch that grabs a strike in the frame, and a cylinder that threads into the case from the face of the door. Because the parts are small and the aluminum is thin, a bent bolt or a misaligned strike cannot be fixed by forcing it. It takes correct adjustment or the right matching part.
One more thing worth knowing: cases and cylinders from different manufacturers can look nearly identical and still not be interchangeable. We identify the make and the cut of your hardware first, so we are not guessing when we order or fit a part. If you are comparing us with other options for broader work on your doors, our commercial locksmith service page covers what else we handle for businesses.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we repair a storefront door lock, step by step?
The process is the same whether the door is brushed aluminum, dark bronze anodized, or glass. What changes is what we find. If the building cannot be left unsecured while we work, we deal with that first and repair second.
- You call (213) 577-1366. We ask what kind of door it is, what the lock is doing, and whether you can lock the building right now.
- We come to you in a mobile van set up for commercial door work. You do not need to bring the door to us.
- Before touching the lock, we test the door itself: how it swings, how the closer pulls it shut, the condition of the pivots, and where the bolt lands against the strike.
- We tell you what we found and whether repair or replacement makes sense. You hear this before any work begins.
- We repair: adjust the strike, correct the door's hang where we can, replace the worn or broken parts, and rekey or replace the cylinder if that is the weak point.
- We test the lock many times from both sides, confirm the inside exit works freely, and hand over working keys.
When does storefront door lock replacement make more sense than repair?
We lean toward repair because it usually keeps the door's existing frame, finish, and keying intact. But some doors are past saving at the lock level, and we would rather say so plainly than patch something that will fail again next month.
If the door is part of a larger hardware upgrade, our commercial door hardware page explains the options. If exit devices are involved, see panic bar installation, since egress hardware has to let people out freely at all times.
- The lock case is cracked or the bolt is deformed from a forced entry.
- The model is obsolete and matching parts are no longer available.
- The stile itself is damaged and cannot hold new hardware securely.
- The existing lock cannot be rekeyed or fitted with a cylinder that works for your keying needs.
- Repeated repairs on the same lock have started to cost more than a new, properly matched set.
What affects the cost of storefront lock repair in View Park–Windsor Hills?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because a storefront door can mean very different jobs. A loose thumbturn and a forced hook bolt on a damaged stile are not the same afternoon. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you receive, ours included.
In most cases, repairing the existing lock is the more economical route compared with replacing the whole door hardware set. But if replacement is truly needed, we say so and explain why.
- The type of hardware: a standard narrow stile case is a different part from a specialty or older discontinued one.
- How much is actually broken: a worn cylinder, a bent bolt, or a damaged stile each need different work.
- Whether the door's alignment or pivots need attention in addition to the lock.
- Whether parts are on hand or must be sourced for your particular make.
- The number of doors and cylinders involved, and whether they need to be keyed alike.
- Time of day. After-hours and holiday calls are handled differently from a scheduled daytime visit.
- Travel distance from our Westwood base, which is about 11 miles from View Park–Windsor Hills.

Call (213) 577-1366Can you do glass door lock repair without damaging the glass?
Frameless and heavy glass doors usually use patch fittings at the top and bottom of the glass, with a lock housed in the bottom-rail fitting. Tempered glass cannot be drilled or cut after it has been made, so we never try to modify the glass itself. We work with the existing fittings, replace the lock or cylinder inside them, or fit hardware that clamps to the glass without drilling.
If the glass is cracked, chipped at the edge, or the fitting has been torn out of it, that is a glazier's job and we will tell you so. What we can do is get the lock working or the door secured so you are not left exposed while you arrange the glass.
Many glass doors also depend on a floor or overhead closer to land the latch properly. If that closer is weak or leaking, the lock will keep acting up no matter how many times it is serviced. We cover that on our door closer repair page.
What does storefront lock repair look like around View Park–Windsor Hills?
View Park–Windsor Hills is an unincorporated Los Angeles County community, mostly hillside streets of single-family, owner-occupied homes. That means storefront doors here are a smaller share of the picture than in a downtown business district. When they do come up, they tend to be at commercial frontage like the Slauson Avenue & Overhill Drive commercial corner, or at businesses near the edges of the area where View Park, Windsor Hills, and the neighboring City of LA areas of Baldwin Hills, Baldwin Vista, Hyde Park, and the Crenshaw District meet.
We serve both 90043 and 90008, and our mobile vans reach the area from our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. A shop owner here is just as likely to need a repair at closing time as a business anywhere else. The Slauson corridor is also a spot where we plan for the two-part problem: a door lock that will not turn, and a set of keys locked inside a car at the end of a long day. If that second situation sounds familiar, our car lockout service covers it separately.
Conditions in the hills are mild, with marine-layer mornings and only modest seasonal swelling in older wood doors. For aluminum storefront doors, that means most failures we see traced to wear, alignment, and forced entry rather than weather. The housing here includes 1920s to 1940s homes, and the View Park historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. If an older building or converted space has a period door, we bring the same repair-first approach we use on aluminum: keep what is original when it can be fixed.

Call (213) 577-1366What if the storefront door was forced overnight or you are locked out?
A forced door is a different kind of call from a worn lock. The priority is getting the building closed and secured, then sorting out the repair. We answer around the clock, so a call at the end of a bad night gets answered the same as a weekday call. Our emergency locksmith page explains how we handle urgent situations, and our business lockout page covers getting back inside a locked storefront.
If the damage goes beyond the lock, such as a bent frame or broken glass, we will say so. We will secure the door as well as it can be done and point you to the right trade for the rest, rather than pretending a lock repair fixes everything.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a storefront door?
We have been in business since 1987, and that history shows up in the unglamorous details: knowing which narrow stile cases are worth repairing and which are not, and recognizing a sagging door before blaming the lock. We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Our mobile locksmith page explains how the van service works.
When you call, you reach one company. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your call to whoever is closest. David is the owner and lead technician and oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
One more piece of advice that applies to any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number before anyone starts work on your door, and check it. That is a reasonable request and you should expect a straight answer.
Frequently asked questions
Can you repair an aluminum storefront door without replacing the whole door?
Usually yes. Most lock problems come from a worn cylinder, a bent bolt, a misaligned strike, or sagging pivots, and all of those can be fixed without replacing the door or the frame. We replace the door only when the stile or frame itself is too damaged to hold hardware securely.
What is a narrow stile door, and why does it need special locks?
The stile is the vertical edge of the door that holds the lock. On a narrow stile door it is only a couple of inches wide, so standard deadbolts and full-size lock bodies do not fit. These doors use slim mortise cases, hook bolts or deadlatches, and cylinders made for that small space.
My key turns but the door will not lock. What is wrong?
Most often the bolt is not reaching the strike because the door has sagged or the strike has shifted. It can also be a broken tailpiece or cam behind the cylinder. We test the door's alignment first, then the lock, so we fix the actual cause.
Can you fix a glass door lock without drilling the glass?
Yes. Tempered glass cannot be drilled or cut, so we work with the existing patch fittings or use hardware that clamps to the glass. If the glass itself is cracked or damaged, you will need a glazier, and we will tell you that up front.
Do you come out at night and on weekends?
Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve View Park–Windsor Hills from our Westwood base, including the 90043 and 90008 ZIP codes.
How much does storefront lock repair cost?
It depends on the hardware type, how much is damaged, whether the door's alignment needs work, whether parts are on hand, how many doors are involved, the time of day, and the travel distance. We explain what is driving the cost before work begins, and repair is usually the more economical route when it is practical.
Should I rekey the storefront after a repair or after an employee leaves?
If keys have gone missing or someone who held a key no longer works with you, rekeying the cylinder is worth considering. It is often done at the same visit as the repair, and we can match it to your existing keying where possible.
Do I need to be at the shop when you arrive?
Someone who can authorize the work should be there or reachable, since we are working on the door to your business. We will go over what we find, and you decide whether to proceed. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out the details for your situation.
