What are high security locks, and what makes them different?
A high security lock is built to resist the ways burglars actually get past ordinary locks: picking, bumping, drilling, prying and unauthorized key copying. In practice that means a cylinder with tighter tolerances, extra or unusual internal pins, hardened steel inserts that slow down a drill, and a restricted keyway that cannot be duplicated at a hardware-store key machine.
Most front doors in Torrance, like most doors anywhere, are fitted with standard pin-tumbler cylinders. They work fine for everyday use and they keep honest people honest. But a bump key or a basic pick set can open many of them quickly in practiced hands. Pick-resistant locks and bump-resistant locks change that math by making the cylinder itself much harder to manipulate, and by making the key much harder to copy.
Here is what the term usually covers when you ask a high security locksmith for an upgrade:
- Pick-resistant cylinders, with security pins and tight internal tolerances that make manipulation slow and unreliable.
- Bump-resistant locks, with internal designs or secondary mechanisms that do not respond to a standard bump key.
- Drill-resistant construction, with hardened inserts placed where a drill would normally attack the cylinder.
- Restricted keys, cut on keyways that are controlled, so copies generally require authorization rather than a quick stop at a kiosk.
- Reinforced deadbolts and strike hardware, because a strong cylinder in a weak door is only half the job.
Why does a standard lock fall short on a Torrance home or business?
The cylinder is only one weak point, and it is not always the first one. Keys are the other. Over the years a house key gets copied for a neighbor, a contractor, a former roommate, a dog walker, a relative who has since moved away. Nobody keeps a list. With an ordinary key you have no way to know how many copies exist or who holds them, and the person who made the copy did not need your permission.
The second issue is age. Torrance has a lot of postwar housing, and many of those homes still carry original mid-century locksets and worn hardware. A lock that has been turned thousands of times loosens up, and a loose lock is easier to defeat and less pleasant to use. Upgrading to a high security cylinder is often a good moment to fix the whole door at once.
The third issue is that no lock works in isolation. A pick-resistant cylinder will not help much if the strike plate is held by short screws into soft door-frame wood, or if the door itself flexes when somebody puts a shoulder into it. When we look at a door, we look at the lock, the bolt throw, the strike, the frame and the screws together. If the surrounding parts are the weak link, we will say so rather than sell you a lock that will not solve your problem.

Call (213) 577-1366How does high security lock installation work, step by step?
Whether you call about a single front door or a whole building, the process follows the same honest sequence. We do not show up with one product and push it onto every door.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, and we ask what you are protecting, what door or doors are involved, and whether this is a planned upgrade or a reaction to a break-in or a lost key.
- We look at the door in person: its thickness, the existing bore holes, the type of latch or deadbolt, the condition of the strike plate and frame, and any older hardware that might limit your options.
- We talk through the level of protection and the level of key control you actually need. A single-family front door and a medical office suite call for different answers, and we explain the tradeoffs plainly.
- We confirm that the chosen cylinder or lockset fits the door as prepared, including backset, cylinder format and door thickness, before anything is installed or any holes are modified.
- We install the lock, reinforce the strike and frame where it makes sense, and check that the bolt throws smoothly and fully, with the door properly aligned.
- We cut and test the keys, check that each one works from both sides where relevant, and explain how restricted keys are handled if you ever need more copies.
- Before we leave, we go over what you now have and what it will and will not do, so you know how to look after it and when to call us.
What affects the cost of high security lock replacement?
We do not publish numbers on a web page, because an honest number depends on the door in front of us. What we can do is explain what moves the final cost up or down, so that when we give you a quote you understand it.
In general, a high security lock costs more than a standard one because the parts are more precisely made and the keys are controlled. That extra expense is where the protection comes from, so it is worth knowing which features you are paying for.
- The security level of the cylinder. Pick resistance alone is the lighter-cost option; adding bump resistance, drill resistance and a controlled keyway steps the cost up.
- Key control. Restricted keyways, key cards and authorization requirements add to the cost, but they are what stops casual duplication.
- The number of doors and cylinders. Keying several doors alike, or keying them in a structured system, takes more planning than a single lock.
- The condition of the door and frame. If the strike, jamb or door prep needs reinforcing or repair, that is added work.
- Whether it is a replacement or a new installation. Swapping a cylinder in an existing lockset is usually the more economical route; installing a new deadbolt where none existed means more door work.
- Commercial hardware. Doors that must also meet exit and access requirements can involve more components than a simple residential bore.
- Timing. A planned visit is simpler to schedule than an after-hours emergency call, and we will tell you plainly if that changes the quote.

Call (213) 577-1366Why do restricted keys matter as much as the lock itself?
People often focus on pick resistance and overlook the key. But the easiest way past any lock is a copy of its key. With a restricted system, the blank is not sold over the counter and duplicates are tied to an authorization process. That gives you something an ordinary lock cannot: a reasonable idea of how many keys exist and who has them.
This matters most in the situations where keys change hands: a new tenant, a departing employee, a contractor finishing a job, a house cleaner who no longer works for you. If your keys are restricted, getting additional copies means going through the right channel, not just any key machine. If you ever need extra copies of keys that are not restricted, our key duplication service handles those. For restricted systems we will explain the procedure when we install the lock.
Restricted keys are not magic. They work only if you treat them seriously: do not leave them with people you do not trust, and do not hand over any authorization to someone you cannot identify. We will tell you what to keep, where to keep it, and what to do if one goes missing.
Which high security locks suit homes, and which suit businesses?
Home security locks and commercial security locks share the same basic ideas, but the day-to-day needs are different.
For a house, the focus is usually the front door, the back door and any side or garage entry. Many homeowners start with a single high security deadbolt on the main entry. If you are adding a deadbolt where there was only a knob lock, our deadbolt installation page covers the door work involved. If you like the convenience of keypads or phone control, a smart lock is a different category, and we will explain where electronic convenience helps and where a mechanical high security cylinder remains the better foundation.
For a business, the questions get more layered. Who needs to open which doors? How many people hold keys? What happens when staff leave? A single restricted cylinder might do for a back office, while a suite with many users calls for a structured master key system so that different people open different doors without carrying a ring of keys. If you want logged, revocable access rather than keys, access control installation may be the right fit, often with high security cylinders still protecting doors where a key override is needed. Call (213) 577-1366How do high security locks fit Torrance homes and businesses?
Torrance covers a lot of ground, and the doors vary just as much. Our storefront is on Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and Torrance is about 21 miles from our base, so our mobile vans are the normal way we reach you here. We serve all five Torrance ZIP codes, 90501 through 90505.
Start with the older parts of town. Old Torrance was laid out in 1912, and its early-20th-century bungalows and craftsman homes often still have vintage door hardware. A high security upgrade on a door like that takes thought. Sometimes the original lock can take a modern high security cylinder, and sometimes the better answer is to add a separate high security deadbolt while keeping the old door looking right. We would rather look at the door than promise one approach in advance.
Most of Torrance is different: large postwar ranch-style tracts from the 1950s and 1960s, found in places like West Torrance, South Torrance and Southwood. Many of those homes still carry original mid-century locksets. If you live in a 90503 or 90505 tract house and your keys have been copied for years, replacing the front and back cylinders with pick-resistant, bump-resistant locks and restricted keys is a sensible way to start over with a known set of keys. For a plain change of keys on an existing lock, see lock rekeying, which is a different service from a security upgrade.
The coast matters too. Western and southern Torrance near the coast, especially Hollywood Riviera and the area near Torrance Beach, sees marine-layer damp and some salt-air wear. That affects finish and moving parts, so in those areas we talk about corrosion resistance and how the hardware is likely to age. Inland tracts are milder and drier, with less corrosion, though summer heat can make doors expand and bind, which we account for when we check how the bolt lines up with the strike.
Business doors are part of the picture as well. Medical office lock and access control work near Torrance Memorial Medical Center is a good example of where high security applies: suites with sensitive supplies and records, many people with keys, and a real need to know who can get in. Retail lock and master-key service around the Del Amo Fashion Center area raises similar questions about key control. And apartment complexes concentrate in North Torrance and along Western Avenue, where restricted keys help property managers keep track of who holds what.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for high security locks?
We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company, not a call center that passes your job to whoever picks it up. When you call (213) 577-1366, you are reaching the same operation that sends out the van. There are no dispatch middlemen between your call and the person who does the work.
We have a physical storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Torrance included. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you discover a broken lock at night and need a door secured, our emergency locksmith service covers that, and the high security upgrade can follow once the immediate problem is handled.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees our work. For a high security job that matters, because the right answer depends on judgment: reading a door, spotting the weak strike, knowing when a lock is more than someone needs. We would rather sell you what fits than the most elaborate product on the shelf.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, which is the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith company license. Ask any locksmith you are considering, us included, for their license information before they start work. A reputable company will have no problem with that question.
What can high security locks not do?
It is better to hear this from us now than discover it later. A high security lock raises the effort and skill an intruder needs, and it controls who can copy your keys. It does not make a door impossible to open. A weak door, a glass panel next to the lock, a hollow frame or an unlocked window can all defeat a very good cylinder.
High security also is not always the right first step. If you simply moved in and want to be sure old keys no longer work, rekeying is usually the more economical route. If your concern is a particular broken or stuck lock, repair may be enough. We will tell you if the upgrade you are asking about is more than the situation needs, and we will tell you if it is not enough.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pick-resistant and bump-resistant locks?
Pick resistance is about making the cylinder hard to manipulate with picking tools, usually through security pins and tight tolerances. Bump resistance is about defeating the bump-key method, where a specially cut key is struck to jar the pins into place. Many high security cylinders address both, plus drilling and key control. We will tell you which features a specific lock actually has before you buy it.
Do I need a high security lock on every door in my house?
Not necessarily. Most people start with the main entry and any door that is hidden from the street, such as a back or side door. The right number depends on how the house is laid out and how much key control you want. We look at each door and recommend where it makes a real difference.
Can you upgrade the locks on an older Old Torrance bungalow without ruining the door?
Often, yes. Older doors vary a lot, so we inspect the existing hardware and the door itself first. Sometimes a modern high security cylinder fits the original lockset; other times a separate high security deadbolt is the cleaner solution. We try to protect the door's character while improving the security.
Can any hardware store copy a restricted key?
That is the idea behind restricted keys: the blanks are controlled, and duplicates are generally tied to authorization rather than available at a quick-copy kiosk. How strict the process is depends on the system chosen. We explain exactly how copies are obtained for the lock we install.
Are high security locks worth it for apartment buildings and rental units?
They can be, especially where keys change hands often. Restricted keys give landlords and property managers a better handle on who holds copies. For tenant turnover alone, rekeying may be the lighter-cost answer, so we look at what problem you are really trying to solve.
Do high security locks work with smart locks or keypads?
They can coexist. Many people keep a mechanical high security cylinder as the foundation and add electronic convenience on top, while others choose a smart lock for certain doors. We would talk through how you use the door before suggesting a combination.
How do I know the locksmith I hire is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins. Also look for a company with a real address and a straightforward quote process. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, and our number is (213) 577-1366.
Can you install high security locks at night or on weekends in Torrance?
Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and we reach Torrance with our mobile vans. If the situation is urgent, we will secure the door first. A full high security upgrade often benefits from a planned visit, but call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out what makes sense.
