Why won't my gate lock in Toluca Lake?
A gate that won't lock is a different problem from a door that won't lock. The gate is the outer edge of your property, it lives outdoors, it gets pushed, slammed, driven toward and leaned on, and the thing holding it shut is often a small piece of hardware doing a big job. When someone calls us about a gate lock, the cause usually falls into one of a handful of buckets, and figuring out which one you have is most of the work.
Toluca Lake has a lot of gated and hedged properties, so we see the whole range, from a simple side gate latch that has drifted out of line to a driveway gate with a keypad, an electric strike and a motor all talking to each other. The symptoms sound similar on the phone. The fixes are not.
- The latch and strike no longer line up, usually because a post has shifted or the gate has sagged on its hinges.
- The latch spring is worn out or the bolt is sticking, so the gate swings shut but never catches.
- The key cylinder is worn, gummed up or partly seized, so the key goes in but will not turn.
- A keypad or electronic gate lock has lost power, lost its programming or taken on moisture.
- An electric strike or magnetic lock is not releasing or not engaging because of wiring, a power supply or a failed part.
- The gate itself has been bent or knocked, so the lock is fine but the frame is fighting it.
What kinds of gate locks do we repair or replace?
Gate hardware is not one category. A wooden side gate between a garage and a back yard, a wrought-iron pedestrian gate at a front walk, and a sliding or swing driveway gate each use different locks, and each has its own failure points. We work on all of them, whether the job is gate latch repair or a full gate lock replacement.
If you are not sure what you have, that is fine. Describe what the gate is made of, how it opens, and whether it uses a key, a code, a fob or nothing at all. We will usually know from that description what we are likely to find.
- Side gate lock and latch assemblies on wood, vinyl and metal gates.
- Pedestrian gate lock hardware, including keyed locks, keypad locks and lever-handle gate sets.
- Driveway gate lock hardware, including the locking side of swing and slide gates, where the gate operator allows it.
- Keypad gate locks and electronic gate locks, both standalone and tied into an existing entry system.
- Outdoor and weather-resistant gate locks chosen for exposed locations, with smart gate lock installation where it makes sense.
- Gate lock installation on a gate that has never had a proper lock, or only ever had a bolt and a padlock.

Call (213) 577-1366How we handle a gate lock repair, step by step
We do the same basic sequence whether it is a plain side gate or a more elaborate entry. The point is to find the actual cause before we sell you a part, because a lot of gate lock complaints turn out to be alignment or power problems rather than a bad lock.
- You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. We ask what kind of gate it is, what it is doing, and whether it is currently secure or standing open, and we tell you plainly if we need to see it before saying more.
- We come out in a mobile van, or you can bring removable hardware to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd if that is easier.
- We look at the whole system: gate position, hinges, posts, latch, strike, cylinder, and any keypad, wiring or power supply.
- We tell you what we found and whether the better move is repair or replacement, and what each route involves before any work starts.
- We do the work, test the gate through repeated open-and-close cycles, and check that it latches without being lifted, pushed or slammed.
- If the gate has a keypad or electronic component, we set or reset codes with you, and show you how it behaves so there are no surprises later.
Repair it or replace it?
Repair is usually the more economical route when the lock body is sound and the problem is alignment, a worn spring, debris, or a loose mount. Re-aligning a strike or adjusting a gate that has dropped on its hinges can bring an otherwise good latch back to life. A cylinder that is dirty or stiff can often be cleaned and lubricated with the right product for outdoor hardware.
Replacement makes more sense when parts are worn through, when the lock was never meant for outdoor use, or when the same fix has been done more than once. It also makes sense if you want to change how the gate works, for example moving from a key to a keypad, or adding a keypad gate lock that lets family and service providers in without handing out copies of keys.
We will say so when repair is the right call, even if replacement would be a bigger job. If a lock has had its day, we will say that too. The decision is yours, and you should have the facts to make it. For general door-side hardware trouble that is not about a gate, our page on lock repair covers that work.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of gate lock repair?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because gate jobs vary too much for a number to be honest. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost, so you can see why two gate calls that sound alike can end up very different.
Once we have seen the gate, we explain the job and what is involved before work starts, so you are not guessing.
- Gate type and material. Wood, wrought iron, aluminum and vinyl each take hardware differently, and some need more fabrication or adaptation.
- Manual versus electronic. A simple keyed latch is a different job from a keypad or electric strike with power and wiring behind it.
- Cause of failure. A realigned strike is a lighter-cost fix than a failed lock body, and a failed lock body is lighter than a bent or damaged gate frame.
- Parts. Quality outdoor hardware costs more than basic hardware, and some gates need a specific part rather than a generic one.
- Access and condition. Gates in tight spots, behind hedges, or with seized fasteners take longer to work on.
- Time of call. Late-night and holiday calls are handled at any hour, and what applies to your call is explained when you phone.
Keypad, electronic and smart gate locks for outdoor use
A keypad gate lock is one of the most common upgrades we are asked about on gated homes. It means no key to lose, codes that can be changed when someone moves out or a contractor finishes a job, and in some setups a way to give a guest temporary access. An electronic gate lock can also tie into an existing intercom or access panel, which is a different job from a standalone keypad.
The part of this that gets overlooked is the word outdoor. A lock that is happy inside a hallway is not necessarily built for a gate. Weather-resistant gate lock hardware is designed to handle rain, sun and dust, and the keypad, wiring connections and power source all need to be protected for that environment. We pick hardware for the gate it is going on, not the other way around.
Toluca Lake sits in the southeast valley, so summers are hot, and heat is hard on plastics, seals and batteries. We do not have the salt-air corrosion that coastal areas deal with, which helps. Still, on shaded, tree-covered streets, winters can be a little damper, and hardware that never gets direct sun can stay wet longer. That shapes what we choose, how we seal connections, and what we tell you about battery checks.
If you are planning a bigger move, we separate the work by purpose. Our smart lock installation page covers app-connected and smart locks for doors, and our access control installation page covers multi-user entry systems. For a gate, we will help you decide whether a standalone keypad is enough or whether a larger system actually makes sense.

Call (213) 577-1366Gate lock service around Toluca Lake neighborhoods
Toluca Lake is small, and its housing mix explains most of the gate work we see. The neighborhood is full of 1920s and 1930s traditional and ranch estates, and many sit behind gates and privacy hedges. The lake-adjacent homes belong to a private homeowner association, in what the area calls the Lake enclave. Older estates often carry a mix of vintage hardware and modern retrofit security, and a gate is exactly where those two eras meet. We run into a decades-old latch bolted next to a newer keypad or strike, and the two do not always get along.
One of the typical calls here is gate and estate lock service for homes near Lakeside Golf Club. In that kind of property, the pedestrian gate at the street, the side gate along the house, and the driveway gate each have different users: family, gardeners, deliveries, guests. A gate lock repair there is often about making each gate behave the way that group needs it to, not just getting the latch to catch. Within the 91602 ZIP code we also do this kind of work on homes in adjacent pockets such as West Toluca Lake on the North Hollywood side, Toluca Woods and Toluca Terrace.
Closer to Riverside Drive, the picture changes. The Riverside Drive village commercial district and the low-rise condos and apartments along that stretch and the Cahuenga edge have their own gates: courtyard gates, parking gates, trash enclosure gates and pedestrian entries. A building gate that will not latch is a security problem for every resident behind it. If the work is for a property owner managing several units, our locksmith for landlords page is the better place to start. For the general picture of what we do here, see our Toluca Lake service page.
We are based on Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, roughly 15 miles from Toluca Lake, and our mobile vans handle calls across the area, which is why a call from Toluca Lake does not mean a trip to us. We bring tools and a range of gate hardware to you.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a gated property?
A locksmith for a gated property needs to understand more than locks. Gates involve posts, hinges, closers, latches, power and sometimes wiring, and the person on the job has to look at the whole picture. That is the kind of work we do.
We have been in business since 1987, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and mobile service vans, so we are one company, not a dispatch service that hands your call to whoever is nearest. The person who answers the phone at (213) 577-1366 works for the company that sends the van, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year.
One more thing worth knowing. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you are thinking of hiring for it, including us. It is a fair question and a good habit before anyone touches your gate or your locks.
If a gate lock failure has left your property exposed tonight, say so when you call. Our emergency locksmith service is built for urgent problems, and our mobile locksmith page explains how the van service works. If you are not sure that the gate lock is the right thing to replace, we can also talk through lock rekeying as a lighter-cost alternative on a lock that is otherwise sound.
Frequently asked questions
My gate won't lock. What should I check before calling?
Look at whether the latch bolt lines up with the strike plate when the gate closes. If the gate has dropped or the post has moved, it may be missing by a small amount. Also check for debris, leaves or dirt in the latch, and if it is a keypad lock, check the batteries or power. If none of that helps, call (213) 577-1366 and we will go through what you are seeing.
Can you repair a driveway gate lock, or only replace it?
We do both. If the lock is sound and the problem is alignment, wear or debris, repair is usually the more economical route. If parts are worn out or the lock was not made for outdoor use, replacement is the better call. Driveway gates with an operator or motor can involve more than the lock, and we will tell you what we find when we see it.
Can I put a keypad on my side gate?
In most cases, yes. A keypad gate lock works on many wood, metal and vinyl gates, though the gate material and frame decide how it mounts. We check the gate first, then recommend outdoor-rated hardware and explain how the keypad is powered and how codes are set.
Are electronic and smart gate locks reliable outdoors?
They can be, if the hardware is made for outdoor use and installed properly. Moisture, heat and weak batteries are the usual troubles. Toluca Lake has hot valley summers and some damper shaded streets in winter, so we choose weather-resistant hardware and seal connections accordingly. Ask us about battery checks and what to do if the power fails.
Do you work on gates at older Toluca Lake estates with vintage hardware?
Yes. Many estates here have 1920s and 1930s hardware sitting beside newer retrofit security. Sometimes the right fix is to keep the original latch and repair it, and sometimes it is to replace it with something more suited to the gate. We will tell you which one we think fits.
Will I need to replace the whole gate if the lock fails?
Usually not. Most gate lock problems come down to the latch, strike, cylinder, keypad or alignment, not the gate itself. If the frame is bent or the post has moved too far, we will tell you plainly, because a new lock will not hold in a gate that is out of true.
Do you handle gates for condos and shops, not just houses?
Yes. Courtyard, parking and pedestrian gates at condos and apartments, and gates at shops and restaurants, are all part of the work. If you manage a building, mention how many gates are involved when you call so we can plan the visit.
How do I know a gate locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins. Also ask who will actually come to your property, since some companies send calls to third-party dispatch. With us, you deal with one company, the one that answers (213) 577-1366.
Can you come out at night or on a weekend for a gate that is stuck open?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. A gate that will not close or latch is an open door to your property, so tell us that when you call and we will work out the best next step with you.
