What does a lock rekey actually do?

Rekeying changes the inside of a lock so that a different key operates it. The lock body, the deadbolt, the handle and the finish on your door all stay the same. What changes is the pin arrangement in the cylinder. Once we are done, the old keys slide in but will not turn, and a new key that we cut cuts the lock open without trouble.

That is the whole idea, and it is why rekeying is usually the more economical route when the hardware itself is in good shape. You are paying to change who has access, not to buy new locks. If you have ever wondered whether you need to rip out every lock after a move, the honest answer is often no. A rekey closes the security gap that old keys leave open, and it does it without a trip to the hardware store or a new set of hardware to install.

It also lets us put every lock on a property onto a single key. If your front door, back door, garage entry and side gate all take different keys, rekeying all house locks to one key is a common request, and it is one of the most practical things we do.

  • Keeps your existing locks, handles and deadbolts
  • Makes every previously cut key useless on those locks
  • Can bring several doors onto one shared key
  • Works for houses, apartments, and commercial doors

When do you need to rekey your locks?

Most rekey calls fall into a handful of situations. In each one the question is the same: do you know everyone who holds a working key to this door? If the answer is no, or even maybe, a rekey settles it.

Rekey locks after moving. When you move into a place, you cannot know how many copies of the keys exist. Previous owners, renters, relatives, cleaners, contractors and real estate visitors may all have had one. Rekeying right away means the only keys that work are the ones you hold.

Rekey locks after buying a house. This is the same logic with higher stakes. The seller handed you a few keys at closing, but that is not the same as a record of every key ever cut. Many buyers schedule a house rekey in the first days of ownership, before the furniture arrives.

Rekey locks after a tenant moves out. For landlords and property managers, tenant turnover rekey is routine maintenance. A departing tenant may return every key and still have had a copy made years ago. Changing the keys between tenants removes that doubt and keeps your records clean.

Rekey locks after losing keys. If you lose a key and think you know where, you may be fine. If it vanished somewhere unknown, or alongside your address on a keychain or in a bag, rekeying is the sensible response. It costs less than the worry.

Other reasons include a breakup or a roommate leaving, a former employee who held a key, or simply wanting to consolidate a pile of mismatched keys into one.

How we handle a rekey, step by step

A rekey is a simple, methodical job, and we try to explain what we are doing as we do it so there are no surprises. Whether you call us for rekey locks near me because you moved in this afternoon or because you are planning a turnover next week, the process is the same.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers, any hour of the day or night, and we ask how many doors, what kind of locks they are, and what prompted the rekey.
  2. We schedule a visit with one of our mobile vans, or you can bring locks to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd if that suits you better.
  3. At the door, we check each lock. We look at the brand, the condition, and whether the cylinder can be rekeyed at all. Some very worn or damaged locks are better replaced, and we say so plainly.
  4. We remove the cylinder, take out the old pins, and rebuild it to match a new key. The lock goes back on the door.
  5. We test every lock with the new key, several times, from both sides of the door, and confirm that the old key no longer turns.
  6. We cut the number of keys you need, and you walk away with a set that works across every door we rekeyed.

Should you rekey or replace the lock?

Rekeying is not always the right call, and we would rather tell you that than take the job. The deciding factor is the condition and the quality of the hardware.

If your deadbolt turns smoothly, the latch lines up with the strike, and the finish is intact, rekeying makes sense. If the lock sticks, the key wears thin quickly, or the door hardware is loose and corroded, then a new lock deserves a look. In that case we would talk to you about lock replacement or a broader change of locks.

Some customers use a rekey visit as the moment to improve the door. Maybe the entry has only a knob and no deadbolt, or you want keypad entry. Those are separate jobs, and we handle them on their own pages, such as deadbolt installation and smart lock installation. One thing to know: a smart lock does not make rekeying unnecessary if it still has a keyed cylinder that others have copies for.

If you are not sure which way to go, describe the locks over the phone or send us a description of what you see. We will tell you whether a rekey will do the job.

What affects the cost of rekeying in Thousand Oaks?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because a fair price depends on the job in front of us. What we can do is explain exactly what moves the cost up or down, so that when you get a quote from us, or anyone else, you can judge it.

The number of locks is the biggest factor. Rekeying one deadbolt is a small job. Rekeying every exterior door, a garage entry, and a side gate takes more time and more parts. Doing them together is usually more economical than doing them one at a time on separate visits.

  • How many cylinders need rekeying, and how many keys you want cut
  • The brand and type of lock, since some are simpler to rekey than others
  • Whether any locks are worn or damaged and need repair or replacement
  • The time of day: a late-night call differs from a scheduled daytime appointment
  • Travel to your address, since our base is in Westwood and Thousand Oaks is a drive of about 38 miles
  • Whether the job is a single home, a multi-unit turnover, or a commercial site with many doors
  • Whether you want a master key arrangement or one key for every lock

Lock rekey in Thousand Oaks: neighborhoods, housing and what we see

Thousand Oaks is a city of many different housing types, and the right rekey approach shifts a little from one to the next. We serve addresses across ZIP codes 91360, 91362, 91320 and 91361.

Older ranch tracts. Much of the city grew around ranch tracts developed in the 1960s and 1970s, and many homes there still carry dated entry hardware. In Newbury Park, a rekey right after a home sale is one of the most natural jobs we can do. A buyer gets a clean set of keys, and if the old hardware is solid, there is no need to replace it. If the original hardware is tired, we can look at an upgrade at the same visit and tell you honestly which path suits the door.

Master-planned communities. Lang Ranch and Dos Vientos Ranch came later, and newer sections of the city are heavily governed by HOAs. If you are in one of them, check your association's rules before changing visible hardware. Rekeying is attractive in those neighborhoods because the lock looks identical afterward, so the exterior of your home does not change and you avoid questions about approved handlesets or finishes. If you want to go beyond rekeying and swap hardware, we can discuss options that fit HOA guidelines.

Gated and estate properties. North Ranch has gated and golf-course estates, and these homes often have many doors: multiple entries, guest houses, side gates and service doors. Rekeying them all to one key, or to a tiered arrangement, is a different job than a standard house rekey. It takes planning, so we recommend calling ahead and walking through what you have.

Condos and townhomes. Condos and townhomes cluster near The Oaks mall and the Thousand Oaks Boulevard corridor. Owners and renters turning over units often need just a quick apartment lock rekey on the entry door, sometimes with a mailbox or storage lock alongside.

Business parks. Along Thousand Oaks Boulevard and in the Rancho Conejo business parks, we also handle commercial rekey and business lock rekey work, covered in more detail below.

One small local note on climate: the Conejo Valley is milder than the San Fernando Valley, and its effects on locks are modest. The main one is sun-driven expansion on exposed west-facing entries, which can make a door stick or bind in warm months. That is not usually a sign that a lock needs replacing, but if a lock feels stiff after rekeying, tell us and we will look at the door alignment too.

Rekeying for landlords, apartments and businesses

Tenant turnover is where rekeying pays for itself most clearly. A landlord with one rental or a property manager with many needs the same thing: a documented, repeatable way to make sure last tenant's keys are dead before the next tenant's are live. We work with owners on exactly that, and our page for landlord locksmith services covers the broader picture, including scheduling multiple units.

For apartment lock rekey, the pattern is simple. Give us the unit addresses and the number of keys per unit, and we rekey the entry, and any other locks, to the new keys. If you want maintenance staff to have a key that works across several units, that is a separate design question, and we can talk through how to set it up.

Commercial rekey is different in scale but not in principle. Offices, shops and light industrial suites often have many locks, shared keys, and staff who come and go. A business lock rekey after an employee leaves or a lease changes hands closes the same gap a home rekey does. For larger sites, a master key system lets different people open different sets of doors with different keys, and it is worth planning before you rekey rather than after. For wider needs, see our commercial locksmith page.

If you only need extra copies of the new keys, that is a straightforward key duplication job, and we can cut them at the same visit.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?

We have been in business since 1987, and rekeying is among the oldest jobs in the trade. It is one we know well. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees our work, and when you call, you are dealing with one company, not a call center that passes your job to whoever is closest. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Thousand Oaks among them.

Phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366. A rekey is rarely an emergency in itself, but the reasons behind it sometimes are: a break-in, a lost set of keys at night, a tenant who left in a hurry. If you are locked out as well, see our pages on house lockout and mobile locksmith service.

One practical tip for any locksmith you hire: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see it before work begins. That is a fair request from any customer, and a reputable company will not mind it. Ask us the same way you would ask anyone else.

If you want to talk first, you can reach us through our contact page or just call. We will answer your questions about the locks you have before anyone drives out.

Frequently asked questions

Is rekeying the same as changing the locks?

No. Rekeying keeps the existing lock and changes the pins inside so a new key works and old keys do not. Changing locks means removing the hardware and installing different locks. Rekeying is often the more economical choice when the hardware is in good condition.

Do I need to rekey after buying a house in Thousand Oaks?

We recommend it. You cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist or who holds them. Rekeying all house locks right after closing means only the keys you hold will work, and the locks on your doors look exactly the same afterward.

Can you rekey all my house locks to one key?

Usually yes. If your locks are rekeyable, we can bring the front door, back door, garage entry and other keyed locks onto a single key. Occasionally a lock is worn or an unusual type, and we will tell you if that one should be replaced instead.

How long does a rekey take?

It depends on how many locks there are and what type they are. A single door is a short visit, while a whole house or a multi-unit building takes longer. When you call, we can give you a realistic idea based on what you describe.

What does a rekey cost?

We do not publish numbers online because the cost depends on the job. The main factors are how many locks, the lock brands and condition, how many keys you need, the time of day, and travel to your address. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will explain what applies to you.

Can you rekey locks between tenants for my rental?

Yes. Tenant turnover rekey is a common job for us. We rekey the entry and any other locks you specify, cut the new keys, and test each lock. If you manage several units, tell us ahead and we can plan the visits together.

Can any lock be rekeyed?

Most standard residential deadbolts and knobs can. Some locks are too worn, damaged, or unusual to rekey reliably. We check each one at the door and tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Do you handle commercial rekey in Thousand Oaks?

Yes. We handle business lock rekey and commercial lock rekey for offices, shops and similar sites, including those along Thousand Oaks Boulevard and in the Rancho Conejo business parks. Larger sites may benefit from a master key plan, which we can discuss first.

Will rekeying change how my door looks, which matters with an HOA?

No. The lock stays on the door, so the handle, deadbolt and finish look the same. That makes rekeying a simple choice in HOA-governed neighborhoods. If you want to change visible hardware, check your association's rules before we start.

How do I know your company is legitimate?

Ask for the BSIS LCO license, which California requires of locksmith companies, and ask any locksmith that question. You can also call our storefront number, (213) 577-1366, and speak with someone directly. We have been in business since 1987.
