What is a master key system, and does your Sun Valley property need one?
A master key system lets different keys open different sets of locks, with one higher-level key that opens all of them. A tenant's key opens only that tenant's door. A shift supervisor's key opens the doors on their side of the building. The owner's key opens everything. Nobody carries a ring of fifteen keys, and nobody is handed access to rooms they have no reason to enter.
You probably need one when the number of locks and the number of people have grown past what a single key can manage. That usually looks like a small apartment building with a dozen units plus a laundry room and a trash enclosure, a shop with a back office and a stockroom, or a yard with several gates, a scale house and a few storage containers. If you are already keeping a notebook of who has which key, or you cannot say for sure who still holds a copy, you are the person this service is for.
A master key system is not a single product. It is a plan: which doors share which keys, which people get which level, and how copies are controlled afterward. The hardware is the easy part. The plan is what David and the team spend the most time on, and it is what separates a system that stays orderly for years from one that turns into a mess within a season. If your needs go beyond keys into door hardware, closers and exit devices, our commercial locksmith work in Sun Valley covers that side.
How does a key hierarchy work?
In a standard pin-tumbler lock, each lock has a set of pin stacks that the key lifts to the right height. In a master-keyed lock, each stack has an extra small piece, called a master pin or wafer, so that two different key cuts can line the stack up: the individual key and the master key. Add more levels of pieces and you get more levels of keys. That is the whole idea, and it is why the design needs to be done on paper before a single cylinder is opened.
Most systems are described by their levels:
- Change key: opens one lock only, such as a single apartment door or one office.
- Master key: opens every lock in a defined group, such as all units on one floor or all offices in one department.
- Grand master key: opens several master groups, such as every floor of a building or both buildings on a site.
- Great grand master key: a fourth level for large or multi-building campuses. Most small properties never need it.

Call (213) 577-1366What are restricted keyways and duplicate-protected keys?
A master key system is only as controlled as its keys. If anyone can walk into a hardware store and copy your master key in a minute, the hierarchy exists on paper only. That is where restricted keyways come in.
A restricted keyway is a key profile that is controlled by the manufacturer. The blanks are not sold over the counter, and the key is usually marked as not to be duplicated. Copies are made only through an authorized source after the request is checked against the account holder. Keys on these systems are often called duplicate-protected keys. The protection is real, but it is a control on copying, not a wall around the lock, so it works best alongside good record keeping and sensible handling.
For an employee key control system, that matters a lot. You decide who is authorized to order keys, and every copy leaves a trail. Some restricted systems also pair the key with a card or registration record, so a departing employee cannot simply make a spare on the way out. If you want to understand how this fits with stronger cylinders in general, see our page on high-security locks. Ordinary copying of standard keys is a separate topic, covered under key duplication.
How do we install or convert a master key system, step by step?
Whether you are starting from new construction or converting a building full of mismatched locks, the process follows the same order. Skipping the early steps is how systems end up with keys that open doors they should not.
- Walk the property and count every lock. That includes entry doors, interior doors, gates, padlocks, cabinets, mailboxes if they are part of the plan, and anything else on a key. We note the brand, the cylinder type and its condition.
- Talk through who needs access to what. We ask about roles, shifts, tenants, contractors and anyone who should have a higher level. This decides the number of levels.
- Draw up the hierarchy and a bitting chart. This is the map of which key cuts open which lock. It is done before any pins are touched, and it is checked for cross-keying, where a change key could accidentally open another lock.
- Choose the keyway. Depending on the property and how much control you need, we recommend either a standard keyway or a restricted one with duplicate-protected keys.
- Pin or replace the cylinders. Existing cylinders that are in good shape can often be re-pinned to join the system. Worn or incompatible ones are swapped. This is where our lock rekeying experience matters, because a master key rekey is rekeying with more variables.
- Cut and test the keys. Every change key is tried in its own lock and in neighboring ones. Every master is tried across its whole group.
- Hand over the records and the rules. You get the key schedule, the list of who holds what, and clear guidance on how to order additional keys. Keep these records somewhere safe and off the premises where possible.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a master key system?
There is no honest flat figure for a master key system, because two properties that look similar can need very different work. We give a quote after we see the property or at least have a complete lock list. These are the things that move the cost:
- Number of locks and doors. More cylinders means more parts and more time, and more keys to cut and test.
- Number of levels. A two-level setup is simpler than a three- or four-level design with several master groups.
- Starting condition. Converting good, compatible cylinders costs less effort than replacing worn, mismatched or damaged hardware.
- Keyway choice. Restricted keyways and duplicate-protected keys involve controlled blanks and an authorization process, which is a different cost from a standard keyway.
- Type of locks. Interior knobs, deadbolts, padlocks, gate locks and mailbox locks do not all pin the same way, and some cannot be master-keyed at all.
- Number of keys to be issued. A building with many authorized key holders needs more cut keys than a three-person office.
- Timing. Planned work during business hours is usually the more economical route compared with after-hours or urgent work, though we do work through the night when a situation demands it.
- Future growth. Leaving room in the design for added doors or tenants takes more planning up front and spares you a full redesign later.
How does a master key system fit Sun Valley's yards, apartments and corridors?
Sun Valley is an unusual mix, and that mix shapes what a good system looks like here. Along the San Fernando Road industrial corridor, recyclers and auto businesses often deal with yard gates, roll-up doors, a front office and commercial padlocks that all need keys. A common headache is a drawer full of padlock keys nobody can match to anything. A hierarchy fixes that: padlocks on the same gate group can be keyed so the yard manager has one key, a night-shift lead has a narrower one, and a delivery driver gets access to the receiving gate only. If your concern is mainly the gate hardware itself, our gate lock repair page is the better starting point.
Apartment buildings are the other big fit. The pockets along Glenoaks Boulevard and the other major corridors, such as Roscoe Boulevard and Sunland Boulevard, tend to have many units behind a few shared doors. An apartment master key system gives each tenant a key that opens only their unit and the shared areas they should use, while the manager's master opens everything. When a tenant moves out, only that unit needs a rekey, not the whole building. Mailbox locks are usually handled separately from door locks, so ask us about mailbox lock replacement as its own item. Owners who manage several units can also look at how we work with landlords.
Climate matters too. Santa Ana winds carry dust that works into exterior lock cylinders in 91352, and a master-keyed cylinder has more pin pieces in each stack than a standard one. Exterior locks on gates and yard doors are the ones that gum up first, so we plan for them, and we talk about maintenance, not just installation. We also don't assume every older door can take a new system. Mixed residential and commercial blocks, from postwar bungalows converted to small offices to the older construction near Stonehurst, can have worn or unusual hardware that has to be checked before it joins any hierarchy. Our storefront is in Westwood, about 17 miles away, and our mobile vans come to you for site surveys and installs.

Call (213) 577-1366What are the trade-offs of master keying?
We would rather you hear this from us before you buy. Every added level of master keying makes a lock slightly easier to defeat by someone skilled, because the extra pin pieces create more combinations that will turn the lock. For a retail shop, a small office or an apartment building, that trade is usually worth it for the control it gives you. For a room holding cash, medication, records or valuable equipment, we often suggest keeping that lock off the master system entirely, or using a separate high-security cylinder.
There is also the human side. A master key is the most valuable key you own. If it is lost, you may need to rekey a large part of the system, not just one door. That is why we ask who will carry the masters and how they will be stored. Some properties do better with electronic credentials, where a lost card can be turned off in seconds. When that fits better than keys, we will say so, and you can read about access control installation as an alternative or a partner to a mechanical system.
Finally, a master key system is not permanent. Staff change, tenants change, and keys wander. A system with clear records and a restricted keyway can be extended or re-pinned. One without records usually cannot be trusted and has to be rebuilt.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a master key system?
We have been in business since 1987, and master keying is a trade where experience shows. The mistakes, such as cross-keying, forgotten doors and unrecorded copies, are ones you only learn to avoid by seeing them. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees system design, so the hierarchy you get is not left to chance.
We are one company, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call, you are not being passed to a dispatch middleman who subcontracts the job. The people who plan your system are the people who service it later, which matters when you need to add a door in a year.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) locksmith company license, known as an LCO license. Ask any locksmith, including us, for that license number before work starts, especially on a job where they will hold the master key records for your property. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at (213) 577-1366. If you want to talk through a plan first, you can also reach us through our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
How many levels can a master key system have?
It depends on the lock hardware and how much security margin you want to keep. Many small properties use two or three levels. Larger sites may use four. Each added level reduces the lock's resistance to skilled attack, so we aim for the fewest levels that do the job.
Can you convert my existing locks into a master key system?
Often yes, if the cylinders are in decent condition and are a type that can be pinned for master keying. Worn, damaged or incompatible locks may need replacing. We check each lock during a survey and tell you which can be converted and which cannot.
What is a restricted keyway, and do I need one?
A restricted keyway uses a controlled key profile, so blanks are not sold over the counter and copies are made through an authorized process. You do not need one for every property, but if you want real control over who can copy keys, such as for employees or contractors, it is worth considering.
Will duplicate-protected keys stop someone from copying my key?
They make copying much harder and leave a record, but no key is impossible to copy by a determined person. Think of it as a strong control, not a guarantee of anything. It works best with careful key issuing and a record of who holds each key.
Can I master key padlocks and yard gates?
Many commercial padlocks and gate locks can be keyed into a hierarchy, though not every model can. Businesses along the San Fernando Road corridor often ask about this. We look at the specific padlock and gate lock before promising anything about compatibility.
What happens if a master key is lost?
It depends on the level of the key. Losing a change key means rekeying one lock. Losing a master or grand master may mean re-pinning every lock it opens, and in a serious case redesigning part of the system. Call us as soon as you know, and we will go over your options based on the records.
Do apartment buildings in Sun Valley use master key systems?
Yes, they are common for buildings with many units and shared doors. Each tenant's key opens their own unit and the shared areas they need, while the manager holds a master. It also makes turnover easier, since only the vacated unit needs rekeying.
Can you help if I already have a system but nobody has the records?
Yes, though it takes more work. We examine the locks to work out how they are pinned, document what we find, and recommend whether to keep, extend or rebuild the system. If the original design is a mystery, rebuilding is sometimes the safer choice.
Do you come to my property, or do I bring the locks in?
Both are possible, but for a master key system we recommend an on-site survey so we can see every door, gate and padlock in context. Our mobile vans serve Sun Valley, and the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd is available for smaller items. Call (213) 577-1366 any time to arrange it.
