Why do Sun Valley homes need a deadbolt installed or replaced?

Most calls for deadbolt installation start the same way. Someone moves into a house, a landlord turns over a unit, a tenant leaves, or a door that has worked for decades finally gets sloppy. The spring latch in the knob is the only thing holding the door shut, and a spring latch is not much of a barrier. A deadbolt is a separate, solid steel bolt that extends into the frame and does not rely on a spring. It is the lock that actually does the work on an entry door.

Sun Valley is mostly postwar single-family housing: bungalows and ranch houses from the 1940s through the 1960s, plus apartment pockets along Glenoaks Boulevard and the other major corridors. Many of those doors were built with a knob lock and nothing else, or with a deadbolt that was fitted decades ago and has been fighting a drifting frame ever since. Some have a deadbolt that was installed crooked, so it only locks if you lift the door and lean on it. That is a lock that gets left unlocked, which defeats the point.

This page covers installing a new deadbolt where there is none, and replacing a worn or mismatched one. If you are trying to decide whether a general lock job is what you need, our broader lock installation service page covers the full range of hardware, and this one stays focused on deadbolts.

Single-cylinder or double-cylinder: which deadbolt fits your door?

A single-cylinder deadbolt has a keyway on the outside and a thumb-turn on the inside. You carry a key to get in and turn a knob to lock or unlock from inside. This is the right choice for the large majority of entry doors, and it is what we install most often.

A double-cylinder deadbolt has a keyway on both sides. Someone inside needs a key to open it, so a person cannot reach through a broken pane or a sidelight, turn a thumb-turn, and walk in. That is the reason people ask for double cylinder deadbolt installation, and it is a fair reason when a door has glass within arm's reach of the lock.

The tradeoff is real and we will say it plainly. A keyed-both-sides lock can slow you down or trap people in a fire or emergency if the key is not where you expect it. Building and fire rules in many places restrict keyed-both-sides locks on doors that serve as a way out, and some insurers and landlords have their own requirements. Before we put one on a door, we will talk through who lives there, whether the door is a primary exit, and where the key will be kept. In many cases a single-cylinder lock with a sturdier strike and a reinforced frame is the better answer, even with glass nearby.

  • Single-cylinder: key outside, thumb-turn inside. Best for most entry doors.
  • Double-cylinder: key on both sides. Considered mainly where glass sits close to the lock, and only after we have talked through exit safety.
  • Keyed-alike sets: several doors on one key, useful for a front door, back door and side gate lock on the same property.

How we handle a deadbolt installation, step by step

A good deadbolt job is mostly measurement and patience. The lock itself is not complicated; the difference between a bolt that glides home and one that binds is in how carefully the door is prepared. Here is how the work goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and describe the door: wood, metal or fiberglass, whether there is already a deadbolt hole, and whether there is glass nearby. A real person answers at any hour.
  2. We look at the door and frame on site. We check thickness, the existing bore holes, the condition of the edge, and whether the frame is solid or soft around the strike.
  3. We talk through the lock choice with you: single or double cylinder, the grade of hardware, and whether you want it keyed to match another lock on the property.
  4. If the door has no deadbolt hole, we mark the height and backset, then drill the cross bore through the face and the edge bore for the bolt using proper guides so the holes stay square.
  5. If we are replacing an existing deadbolt, we remove it, check the holes for wear or oversizing, and repair or shim them if the old lock left the door loose.
  6. We mortise the edge plate flush, set the strike in the frame, and use longer screws on the strike that reach into the framing behind the jamb rather than only the thin trim.
  7. We test the bolt with the door open and closed, in the way you will actually use it, and adjust until it throws fully with no lifting, pulling or shoulder pressure.
  8. We hand you the keys, show you the thumb-turn or second keyway, and talk through anything about the door that is worth fixing later.

Should you replace the deadbolt or just rekey it?

Not every tired deadbolt needs to come out. If the lock operates smoothly, the bolt is solid and you only worry about who has copies of the key, then rekeying changes the pins so old keys stop working, and it is often the more economical route. If the lock is worn, sticky, rusted, mismatched in finish, or simply the wrong type for the door, then deadbolt replacement is the better call.

Replacement also makes sense when the existing lock is a low-grade model whose bolt is short or whose strike is flimsy. Deadbolts are graded for durability and strength, and the cheap builder-grade ones used in many older rentals sit at the bottom. If you want a stronger lock than what is on the door, we can talk about high-security lock options, which add pick resistance, drill protection and controlled keys.

If the whole lockset, including the knob or lever, is what is failing, our lock replacement page covers that. Here we are talking about the deadbolt specifically, and we will tell you honestly if the problem is somewhere else on the door.

What affects the cost of deadbolt installation in Sun Valley?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the work is genuinely different from door to door, and a figure that does not fit your door helps nobody. We will give you a clear total before we start work. These are the things that move it up or down.

  • The hardware itself: a basic grade deadbolt costs less than a heavier, higher-grade one, and a high-security cylinder with restricted keys costs more than either.
  • Whether the door is already drilled: replacing a lock in an existing hole is quicker than boring a new cross bore and edge bore.
  • Door material: solid wood, hollow-core, steel and fiberglass all drill differently, and steel or fiberglass can call for more care.
  • Condition of the door and frame: swollen, split or loose-fitting doors may need repair so the new bolt has something solid to bite into.
  • Double-cylinder or keyed-alike sets: more cylinders and extra keys add to the hardware and the time.
  • How many doors: doing several on one visit is usually more efficient than coming back for each.
  • Time and place of the call: a late-night or holiday visit takes a technician out of regular hours, and a property farther out takes more driving than one near our base.
  • Extras: reinforced strike plates, door-edge repair, or matching finishes.

Deadbolts around Sun Valley: Stonehurst, Glenoaks and the Shadow Hills edge

Sun Valley, ZIP 91352, is not one kind of housing, and the deadbolt question changes with the street. Our storefront is on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, about 17 miles away, and our mobile vans cover the neighborhood and the surrounding area.

In Stonehurst, the 1920s river-rock cottages often still carry vintage hardware. That can be charming, and sometimes the original mortise lock is worth keeping. But old doors in these cottages are often thicker or have unusual bores, and a modern deadbolt has to be fitted with that in mind. We look at the door before we promise a clean swap. If you are ever shut out of one of these cottages while a worn lock is the cause, our house lockout service comes first, and we can fit a replacement deadbolt once you are back inside so the same thing does not happen again.

Along Glenoaks Boulevard, the apartment pockets bring a different set of calls: property managers who want consistent deadbolts across several units, and tenants who have just moved in and want the lock upgraded. Hardware that is keyed alike or on a managed key plan can be set up here, and we can work with whoever is managing the building.

Near the Shadow Hills edge, horse-zoned lots are part of the picture, which means a property may have the main house plus other doors that matter. A set of deadbolts keyed alike means one key covers those doors, and that is a practical use of keyed-alike hardware. The Roscoe Boulevard and Sunland Boulevard corridors have their own mix of houses and small apartment buildings, and we install on all of them.

Heat, dust and swollen doors: what Sun Valley weather does to deadbolts

The eastern San Fernando Valley runs hot and dry in summer. Wooden doors and frames can swell in that heat, then shift again as conditions change, and a deadbolt that lined up perfectly in April can start catching on the strike by August. When we install a deadbolt, we allow for this by leaving the bolt just enough clearance in the strike and by setting the strike so the bolt does not carry the whole load of a door that moves a little.

Santa Ana winds are the other factor. They carry dust that works into exterior lock cylinders, and a cylinder full of fine grit gets stiff, then starts to bind or break keys. A lock on an exposed door gets more of this than one in a covered entry. Choosing a good cylinder helps, and so does a little occasional care, such as a dry graphite or Teflon-based lubricant instead of oily sprays that hold onto dust.

Winters are mild with occasional damp marine-layer mornings, which is gentler on hardware, but damp air can still affect an exposed finish over time. If a door faces west or sits in full sun, we will mention it when choosing a finish and a lock.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for deadbolt installation

We have been in business since 1987, and deadbolt work is the sort of job that rewards experience. Anyone can drill two holes in a door. Getting the holes square, the strike set into solid wood, and the bolt aligned so it throws without a fight is something you learn by doing it on thousands of doors, old and new.

We are one company with a storefront in Westwood and our own mobile service vans. There is no dispatch middleman who passes your job to whichever subcontractor is free, so the person who answers the phone works for the same company as the person who arrives. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and Sun Valley is one of them.

The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, at (213) 577-1366. If you need someone out on short notice, our emergency locksmith service is the right page, and our mobile locksmith service explains how the vans work.

One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you are thinking of hiring to show you theirs. It is a fair question and a reasonable one to ask of us as well.

Before you call: what helps us prepare

A few details make the first conversation faster and help us bring the right hardware in the van. None of it is required, and we can work out the rest at the door.

If you are also wondering whether a keypad or app-controlled lock would suit the door better than a keyed deadbolt, our smart lock installation page covers that option.

  • Door material, if you know it: wood, metal or fiberglass.
  • Whether there is already a deadbolt hole, or only a knob.
  • Whether there is glass within reach of the lock, which affects the single-versus-double-cylinder conversation.
  • How many doors you want done and whether you want them keyed alike.
  • Whether the door sticks or rubs, especially in summer, so we can check the frame while we are there.
  • Any rules from a landlord, HOA or insurer about the type of lock allowed.

Frequently asked questions

How long does deadbolt installation take?

It depends on the door. Replacing a deadbolt in an existing, well-cut hole is a short job. Drilling a new deadbolt into a door that has only a knob takes longer, and a door that needs repair first takes longer again. We will tell you what to expect once we have looked at it.

Can you install a deadbolt in a door that only has a knob?

Yes. We drill a new cross bore through the door face and an edge bore for the bolt, set the edge plate and strike, and align the bolt with the frame. Solid wood, steel and fiberglass doors can all take a deadbolt, though each is drilled a little differently.

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea?

Sometimes. It makes sense where a pane of glass or a sidelight sits close enough to the lock that someone could break it and reach in to turn a thumb-turn. The drawback is that you need a key to get out, which matters in an emergency, and some rules limit these on exit doors. We talk through the safety side before installing one.

Should I replace my deadbolt or just have it rekeyed?

If the lock works well and your concern is who has keys, rekeying is often the more economical route. If the lock is worn, sticky, low-grade or the wrong type for the door, replacement is better. We will look at it and tell you which one fits.

My door sticks in summer and the deadbolt won't line up. Can that be fixed?

Often yes. Heat can swell wooden doors and frames, which throws off the bolt and strike. Depending on the cause, we may adjust or reset the strike, enlarge the strike opening slightly, or correct the way the door hangs. Sometimes the door itself needs work before any lock will behave.

Can you key several deadbolts to the same key?

Yes. A keyed-alike set lets one key open the front door, back door and other entry doors on a property. This is handy for a house with several exterior doors and for landlords managing units.

Can you install a deadbolt on an apartment door?

If you rent, check your lease and speak to your landlord first, since many leases control lock changes. If you manage or own the building, we can install and key the deadbolts to suit. Landlords may also want to see our locksmith for landlords page.

Do you come out at night and on weekends?

Yes. We answer the phone at (213) 577-1366 every hour of every day of the year, and our mobile vans serve Sun Valley day and night. After-hours visits can affect cost, and we will explain that up front.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before they start work, and be cautious of anyone who will not give you a clear answer, quotes only after the job begins, or arrives without identifying the company.
