What do Chevrolet owners in Signal Hill usually need?

Chevrolet is a broad nameplate, so the calls vary: a Silverado or Tahoe with a worn key, a Malibu or Impala with a snapped blade, a Cruze or Equinox with a dead remote, a Colorado whose only key has gone missing. What they share is that the right fix depends almost entirely on the model year. Signal Hill also has a few distinct settings where these problems tend to surface.

Along Willow Street and Cherry Avenue, apartments cluster, and many cars there park in shared lots or along the street rather than behind a private garage door. A key lost on a night out, or snapped off in the ignition, is usually discovered right at the car. Up on the hilltop, in the view-home tracts off Panorama and Skyline drives and in the gated Promontory communities, the car is more likely to sit in a driveway or garage. There the typical call is a spare that was never made, or a fob that has simply stopped working.

Then there are the places people go: Costco Signal Hill, Signal Hill Park, Hilltop Park, Discovery Well Park, the Signal Hill Auto Center. A key that vanishes or a fob that dies while you're out is a stranded-driver problem, and a mobile van means the car usually doesn't need to be towed anywhere to get fixed. If you are only locked out and the key is inside, that is a different and often simpler job, covered on our Signal Hill car lockout page.

How does mobile Chevrolet key service work at the curb?

The equipment we need fits in a van, so the work happens beside your car wherever it is in Signal Hill. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 29 miles from the city, and the mobile vans are how we reach you. When you call (213) 577-1366, a person answers at any hour. From there it goes like this:

  1. You tell us the model, the year and what happened: lost key, broken key, dead fob, or no working key at all. The model year matters more than anything else you can say.
  2. We explain what that key system involves and what will drive the cost before a van heads out. If something is uncertain for your year, we say so plainly and plan to confirm it by VIN or in person.
  3. At the car, we confirm that you own it by matching your ID to the registration or title. We do this on every vehicle, and it protects you as much as anyone.
  4. We identify the exact key type: a plain cut key, a transponder key, a flip key, a remote-head key or a push-button smart fob.
  5. We cut the key by code or from the lock, then program it to the vehicle where that system requires programming.
  6. You test everything with us standing there: door, ignition or push-button start, remote buttons, and the emergency blade if your fob has one.

What kind of Chevrolet key do you have? The four eras in plain terms

Chevrolet's key systems changed in stages, and the dividing lines differ by model. Treat the years below as a guide, not a rule. We verify the exact year for your vehicle, and our Chevrolet key overview covers more models.

  • Passlock era, through the mid-2000s: Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban (2000-2006), Impala (2000-2005), Malibu (2000-2003), first-generation Equinox (2005-2006) and first-generation Colorado (2004-2012). There is no chip in the key. The security sensor sits in the ignition lock cylinder, so a correctly cut key starts the vehicle.
  • Circle-plus ID46 transponder era: this arrived at different times per model. Malibu in 2004, Impala in 2006, full-size trucks and SUVs in 2007, Equinox in 2007. Now the chip is in the key, and the car has to recognize it.
  • 46E era, roughly 2010 to 2015 and beyond: Hitag2 Extended chips in remote-head keys, flip keys and the first proximity fobs. Cruze in 2011, Malibu in 2013, Silverado in 2014, Tahoe and Suburban in 2015, Colorado in 2015.
  • Smart-fob era, 2021 on: redesigned Tahoe and Suburban (2021), Colorado (2023) and Traverse (2024) use NXP ID49 smart fobs.

Does my Chevrolet key need programming?

It depends on which era your car belongs to. Passlock-era Chevrolets need no key programming at all. Those keys are cut by code. The well-known relearn, three ten-minute cycles, only comes into play after an ignition cylinder or module has been replaced.

Circle-plus ID46 vehicles support that same onboard relearn when every key is lost, without special tools. Programming through the OBD port with professional equipment is much faster, and it is how we would normally approach it.

Cars from roughly 2010 to 2020 on the 46E system are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and aftermarket coverage for all-keys-lost is mature.

On 2021 and newer vehicles, such as Tahoe and Suburban from 2021, Colorado from 2023 and Traverse from 2024, key programming is increasingly validated through GM's servers (ACDelco SPS2). All-keys-lost may require NASTF VSP-credentialed tooling or dealer service, depending on the tool. We confirm current tool coverage for your car before promising anything. The newest 2025 and later redesigns have immature aftermarket support and may be dealer- or specialist-only for now.

What if I've lost every Chevrolet key?

All keys lost is where the era matters most, so here is the honest picture. On a Passlock-era Silverado, Tahoe, Impala or older Malibu, a new key can be cut from the lock or by code and no programming is needed. On circle-plus and 46E cars, we create a new key and program it to the vehicle. On 2021 and newer smart-fob models, it comes down to whether current tooling covers your exact car.

If your Chevrolet falls into the group that is dealer-only for now, we will tell you on the phone rather than send a van that can't finish the job. Our page on lost car key replacement in Signal Hill explains the general process, and the notes there apply here too.

One more thing: please don't order a blank online and hope. A copy cut for a transponder-era car without a chip will open the doors but won't start the engine, and a poor-quality cloned chip can fail intermittently, which is a frustrating thing to chase later.

How much does Chevrolet key replacement cost in Signal Hill?

We don't quote numbers in an article, because the honest price depends on your car, and the same Chevrolet nameplate can mean very different work. These are the things that move it:

  • The key era. A plain cut Passlock key is simple work. A transponder key needs programming. A smart fob needs a more capable tool and sometimes server validation.
  • All keys lost versus a spare. Making a copy from a working key is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
  • The key type. Plain transponder key, flip key, remote-head key and proximity fob all differ in parts and in the work involved.
  • Whether the ignition or a module must be dealt with. A worn lock cylinder is a different repair from a key job.
  • Tool coverage. Newer models may need credentialed tooling, and that affects what the job takes.
  • Time and place. A call in the middle of the night is not the same as a daytime appointment, and your location in Signal Hill relative to the van matters too.

Should I go to the dealer or call a mobile locksmith?

Both are legitimate, and the right choice depends on the car. For most Chevrolets from the Passlock era through the 46E era, a mobile locksmith can do the whole job where the car sits, with no tow and no trip to a service department. That is usually the more economical route as well as the more convenient one.

For the newest vehicles, the dealer may be the only option. A 2025 or later redesign, or a 2021 and newer model that needs GM server validation our tools can't reach, may have to go to the dealer. If that's your situation, we'll say so. There is no point in us arriving only to say we can't finish.

Signal Hill has its own dealership district, the Signal Hill Auto Center, so the dealer is nearby if you do need it. We also cover commercial lock and key work for businesses like the dealerships there, which is a separate service from the car-key work on this page.

Chevrolet key problems that come up again and again

Not every call is a lost key. These are the failures we are asked about most often, and several of them have simpler fixes than owners expect:

  • Failed Passlock sensors on 2000s models: the security light stays on or the engine starts and then stalls, even with a perfectly good key.
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage trucks and sedans, where the key sticks or stops turning.
  • Hardware-store copies cut for transponder-era cars without a chip. They open the doors but won't start the engine.
  • Broken flip-key hinges and cracked remote-head or fob shells.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries. The dash reports 'no remote detected', yet the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Chevrolet key?

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are one company, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus our own mobile vans, so there is no call center passing your job to an unknown contractor. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins. That's a fair question for anyone who comes to your car.

If you are weighing options for a fob specifically, see our key fob replacement page for Signal Hill, or the broader car key replacement overview for Signal Hill.

Chevrolet key help across Signal Hill: hilltop, Willow Street and the Auto Center

Signal Hill rises well above the surrounding coastal plain, so it catches marine-layer damp and a steady onshore breeze. Exterior hardware sees moderate salt exposure, less than beachfront Long Beach. For a car parked outside, that is one more reason to replace a worn or sticking key before it gives out entirely.

The housing mix shapes where our calls come from. The lower slopes hold modest 1920s to 1940s cottages from the oil boom, while the hilltop was redeveloped from the 1980s onward with view-home tracts, townhomes and gated developments such as the Promontory communities. Apartments cluster along Willow Street and Cherry Avenue, so the housing skews newer than the surrounding Long Beach blocks. The calls follow along: a key lost near Eastbluff Estates is a different scene from a lockout at the Willow Street corridor apartments, but both come down to the same question of what your Chevrolet's key system actually is.

We work throughout ZIP 90755, including the hilltop view-home district around Panorama and Skyline drives, the gated Promontory at Signal Hill, the Eastbluff Estates area, the Signal Hill Auto Center district on Cherry Avenue, the Willow Street and Spring Street industrial corridors, and the blocks near California Heights in Long Beach. If a Chevrolet truck is part of a business out on Spring Street, the same era rules apply. Our Signal Hill service page lists everything else we do in the city, and you can also contact us or read about our approach on the Wilshire Lock & Key home page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Chevrolet key if I have no original?

In most cases, yes, though it depends on the era. Passlock-era keys can be cut with no programming. Circle-plus and 46E-era cars can be programmed with professional tools. Some 2021 and newer models may be dealer-only, and we tell you that up front.

Does my older Silverado, Tahoe or Impala need a programmed key?

Passlock-era models (Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban 2000-2006, Impala 2000-2005) have no chip in the key. A correctly cut key starts the vehicle, because the sensor is in the ignition lock cylinder. We confirm your exact year before we start.

Why does my copied key open the door but not start the car?

Most likely it was cut for a transponder-era car and has no chip, or the chip was never programmed to your vehicle. The door is a mechanical lock, but the engine needs the car to recognize the chip.

Can you do keys for a newer Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado or Traverse?

Sometimes. On 2021 and newer models, programming is increasingly validated through GM's servers, and all-keys-lost can require specialist tooling or the dealer. Because several 2021 to 2024 boundaries are disputed between catalogs, we confirm current coverage for your car before booking.

My dash says 'no remote detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Often not. A dead battery is a common cause on smart fobs, and the hidden emergency blade should still open the door. If the fob itself is cracked or not responding after a battery change, we can look at replacing it.

Do I need to prove I own the car?

Yes. We match your ID to the registration or title before cutting or programming a key. It protects you from someone else getting a key made for your car.

Are you licensed to do this work?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for their license number before work starts. Ask when you call (213) 577-1366, and don't hire anyone who dodges the question.

Do you really come to Signal Hill any time of day or night?

Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Signal Hill. When you call, we'll tell you what your Chevrolet needs and what to expect.
