What is transponder key programming, and why does a copied key often fail?

A transponder key looks like an ordinary car key with a thick plastic head, but inside that head is a small chip. When you turn the key or press the start button, the car's immobilizer sends a low-power signal, the chip answers with a code, and the engine is allowed to run only if the code is one the car already knows. A key that is cut perfectly but carries no matching chip will often turn in the ignition and the car still won't start.

Transponder key programming is the step that introduces a new chip to the car. Depending on the vehicle, that is done through the diagnostic port, by putting the car's computer into a learning mode, or with a mix of both. If the key has a metal blade, it also has to be cut to fit the ignition and door locks. That is why a cheap copy from a hardware kiosk so often fails: the blade fits, but the chip is missing, or it was never registered with your particular car.

This page is about the chip-key side of automotive work: transponder key replacement, chip key replacement, and adding a duplicate transponder key. It is one part of what our automotive locksmith service covers, and we will point you to the right sibling service if your situation is really something else.

When do Porter Ranch drivers need a chip key programmed?

Most calls fall into a handful of situations. Knowing which one you are in helps us tell you what the job involves before we leave the shop.

If you have lost every key to the car, that is a bigger job than adding a spare, and our page on lost car key replacement walks through how that differs. The situations below are the ones where chip key programming is the main event.

  • You have one working key and want a duplicate transponder key before you lose it. This is the easiest case and usually the more economical route.
  • You lost your only key, or all of them, and the car needs a new chip key introduced from scratch.
  • The key still turns but the car will not start, or the dashboard shows a security or key light, which can mean the chip is damaged or no longer recognized.
  • The plastic head cracked, the chip was knocked loose, or the key was damaged by water or a hard drop.
  • You bought a used car that came with one key and you want a second one you can trust.
  • A family member who is starting to drive needs a key of their own.

How do we program a transponder key, step by step?

The process is the same in outline for every car, but the details depend on the vehicle. Here is what you can expect when you call us.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and reach our company directly, any hour of the day or night. You give us the year, make and model, and tell us whether you have a working key.
  2. We confirm the vehicle details, ideally with the VIN, because the VIN is what tells us the exact key type and the programming method for your car.
  3. Before we head out, we tell you what the job involves, whether the key can be cut and programmed on site, and whether anything on your vehicle falls into dealer-only territory.
  4. Our mobile van comes to wherever the car is parked. We ask for proof that you own the vehicle or are authorized to have a key made for it.
  5. If the key has a blade, we cut it to the vehicle's key code or by working from an existing key or the lock itself.
  6. We program the chip to the car's immobilizer using the method that fits your vehicle.
  7. We test the result: starting the engine more than once, using the door locks, and checking any remote buttons. We also test your other keys so you know every key you hand back still works.
  8. We explain what we did, what you now have in your hand, and what to do if you want an additional key later.

Can we program your car, or does it have to go to the dealer?

We can handle many vehicles on site, but not all of them. Some makes and newer model years lock key programming behind manufacturer security access that an independent locksmith may not be able to reach. In other cases, the key itself has to be ordered by VIN, which changes how long the job takes. We do not publish a make-by-make list here because those rules change by model year and we will not claim something we have not confirmed on your car.

What we do instead is check by VIN and, when needed, in person. If your vehicle turns out to be a dealer-only case, we will say so plainly before you pay for anything, so you are not left with a visit that could never have finished the job.

Two related situations come up often. If your car uses a push-button start with a proximity fob, the work overlaps with key fob replacement. And if a perfectly good, correctly programmed key still will not start the car, the fault may be in the ignition or the immobilizer system rather than the key, which is a job for ignition repair instead of more key programming.

How much does transponder key programming cost in Porter Ranch?

We do not quote a figure on a web page because the same service can be a very different job from one car to the next. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost, so the number you hear on the phone makes sense.

Having a working key is usually the biggest factor in your favor. Adding a key to a car that you can still start is generally the lighter-cost option, and an all-keys-lost job is more involved. Because we come to you, there is also no tow to a dealer to arrange.

  • Vehicle make, model and year, which determine the key type and the programming method.
  • The kind of key: a basic transponder key, a key with remote buttons built in, a flip key, or a proximity smart key.
  • Whether you have a working key or have lost them all.
  • Whether the blade needs to be cut, and how many keys you want made.
  • Whether the key has to be ordered by VIN, or the vehicle falls into a dealer-only case.
  • Travel and timing. Porter Ranch is about 25 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we explain any timing or travel factors on the call, before we start.

What does chip key work look like around Porter Ranch?

Porter Ranch is a master-planned community of mostly larger two-story single-family homes, with very little apartment stock. In practice that means most cars live in attached garages and driveways rather than in shared parking structures. That suits mobile key programming well: we can work in your driveway, with the car right there and the garage door open if the weather is windy.

A lot of the community sits behind gates. Porter Ranch Estates, Renaissance, Canyon Oaks and Avila are gated, while Westcliffe and Hillcrest are guard-gated. If you live in one of them, give the guard house or your gate system a heads-up that a locksmith van is coming for you, so we can get to your car without a stop at the entrance. If your car is somewhere else in ZIP code 91326, such as the Bluffs at Bella Vista, The Vineyards district, or along the Sesnon Boulevard corridor, tell us the nearest cross street and where it is parked.

One of the real local situations is retail lock and key trouble at The Vineyards at Porter Ranch and Porter Ranch Town Center. A key that snaps, goes missing, or stops being recognized while you are shopping can leave you in a parking lot. We can come to wherever the car is, and our mobile locksmith service is built around that. If the problem is that the keys are locked inside the car rather than a chip issue, that is a car lockout instead, and we handle that differently.

The same goes for a car parked at a trailhead or park lot, such as Holleigh Bernson Memorial Park, Limekiln Canyon Park or Porter Ridge Park, or at Porter Valley Country Club. We do not need your car at a shop. We need to know where it is.

One more local note: Porter Ranch sits on the slopes of the Santa Susana Mountains, with strong Santa Ana winds and hot, dry summers. Long hot days are hard on small key batteries and plastic key heads, so before you assume a chip has failed, it is worth replacing the battery in a remote key. If the car still will not recognize the key afterward, call us.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for chip key programming?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you are calling one company. There is no dispatch middleman routing you to whoever is closest and unvetted.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year, so a lost key at an odd hour is not a problem you have to carry until morning. If you are not sure whether you need us tonight or can wait, our 24-hour locksmith line is the same number.

One more thing worth knowing, whoever you hire: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you are considering for their license number before they start work on your car. It is a reasonable question and a good company will not mind answering it.

How should you prepare before we arrive?

A few minutes of preparation makes the visit simpler and can keep the job from running longer than it needs to.

  • Have the vehicle's year, make, model and, if you can, the VIN, which is visible at the base of the windshield on the driver side or on the door jamb sticker.
  • Keep your photo ID and proof of ownership, such as registration or title, ready.
  • Find every key you still have, including old or broken ones. Some vehicles register all keys together during programming, and we will tell you if yours does.
  • Make sure the car is accessible: unlocked if possible, and not blocked in a garage behind other vehicles.
  • Tell any guard house or gate attendant that a service van is coming.

Is it smarter to duplicate now than replace later?

Almost always, yes. Adding a key while you still have a working one is simpler than building a new key set after the last one is gone. A key duplication request for a transponder car is more than a blade cut, because the chip has to be programmed, but it is still the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost call.

If you are weighing your options, the broader car key replacement page covers the different situations, including keys that have been stolen or damaged. A new family car, a teen driver, or a household that is moving in and sorting out house keys are all good moments to put a spare chip key on the list.

Frequently asked questions

Can you program a transponder key if I have lost all my keys?

In many cases, yes. All-keys-lost work is more involved than adding a spare because there is no working key to start from, and some vehicles may need to be confirmed by VIN or handled by the dealer. Call (213) 577-1366 with your vehicle details and we will tell you plainly which case yours is.

Why won't my copied key start the car even though it turns in the ignition?

Most likely the copy has a correctly cut blade but no chip, or a chip that was never programmed to your car's immobilizer. The car reads the chip, not just the metal. Having the key programmed to the vehicle usually solves it.

Do you come to gated communities in Porter Ranch?

Yes. Our vans come to gated and guard-gated villages as well as open streets. Let the guard house or gate system know ahead of time that a locksmith is coming to service your vehicle, and give us the address and the car's location.

Will programming a new key stop my old keys from working?

It depends on the vehicle and the programming method. On some cars, the procedure re-registers every key, so you need all of them with you. We tell you how your vehicle behaves before we begin and test your existing keys afterward.

Do I need to be present, and what do I need to show?

Yes. We need to see the car and you, along with photo ID and proof that you own or are authorized to have a key made for the vehicle, such as registration or title. This protects you and keeps keys from being made for cars that are not yours.

Is a locksmith-programmed key the same as a dealer key?

A correctly programmed chip key is recognized by your car's immobilizer the same way, and you can use it every day. Some vehicles, though, are dealer-only for key programming or require a key ordered by VIN. We check your vehicle and tell you honestly if the dealer is the only route.

How much will transponder key programming cost me?

We do not list prices online because the cost depends on the vehicle, the key type, whether you have a working key, how many keys you want, and whether the key must be ordered. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will explain what applies to your car before any work starts.

Can you help on a weekend or late at night?

Yes. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year. If you are stuck in a parking lot or at home with no working key, call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and we will tell you what the job involves.
