What does lock rekeying actually do?
A standard pin-tumbler lock works because a row of small pins inside the cylinder sits at exact heights when the right key is inserted. Rekeying means we take the cylinder apart, replace those pins with ones sized for a new key, and put it back together. The lock stays on your door. The old key no longer turns it. A new key does.
That is the whole job, and it is worth being clear about what it is not. Rekeying is not a repair, and it does not make a lock stronger than it was. If the lock on your front door is a solid, well-made one, rekeying gives you new key control on good hardware. If the lock is worn out, loose, or poorly made, rekeying gives you a new key on the same weak lock, and we will tell you that plainly rather than sell you a job that does not solve your problem.
People often ask for a lock rekey, a house rekey, or to rekey door locks, and those all mean the same thing: new keys, same locks. It is usually the more economical route compared with replacing every lock in the house, and it is the right answer more often than people expect.
- Same locks, same look from the street, new keys
- Old keys, including copies you do not know about, stop working
- Every lock can be set to one key, so you carry one key instead of five
- Works on most residential deadbolts, knob sets, and many commercial cylinders
When should you rekey your locks?
Most rekey calls come from a handful of situations. They all share one question: do you know exactly who has a key to this door? If the honest answer is no, rekeying is the fix.
- Rekey locks after moving or buying a house. The previous owners, their agent, a contractor, a neighbor who watered the plants, and a cleaner may all hold copies. You have no way to count them.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out. Tenant turnover is the most common reason a landlord calls us. Tenants copy keys, and a deposit refund does not take those copies back.
- Rekey locks after losing keys. If a key is gone and it had your address on a fob or sat in a bag, the lock should change before someone finds it.
- Rekey after a breakup, a falling-out with a house sitter, or a contractor finishing work.
- Rekey after an estate sale or property transfer, when keys have passed through several hands and nobody has a reliable list.
- Rekey all house locks so a single key opens the front door, back door, garage entry, and side gate.

Call (213) 577-1366How we rekey your locks, step by step
Here is what happens when you call (213) 577-1366 and we come out. It is the same careful process whether it is one front door or every lock on the property.
- You tell us what is going on: moving in, tenant turnover, lost keys, or something else. We ask how many locks, what kind they are, and whether any are stiff, loose, or damaged.
- We look at each lock in person. Before we take anything apart, we check that the lock is in good enough condition to be rekeyed. Some are not, and we will say so before we start.
- We remove the cylinder, take out the old pins, and fit new ones cut to a new key pattern. We test the new key repeatedly and check that the old key no longer works.
- If you want several locks on one key, we match them all to the same pattern so a single key works across the property.
- We cut the keys you need, test the throw and latch on every door, and show you that everything works smoothly before we leave.
- If we find a lock that should be replaced rather than rekeyed, we explain why and give you the choice. You are never pushed into a bigger job.
What affects the cost of a rekey in Palos Verdes Estates?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your doors. Here is what moves the cost up or down, so you can judge any quote you receive, ours included.
Rekeying is generally the lighter-cost option compared with replacing locks, but it is not always the right one. A fair quote starts with a conversation about your actual hardware.
- How many locks need to be rekeyed. Each cylinder is handled individually.
- The type of lock. A common deadbolt is simple. A vintage mortise cylinder, a high-security cylinder, or a restricted keyway takes more care and sometimes specific parts.
- The condition of the locks. Corroded or sticky hardware may need cleaning or repair before it can be rekeyed reliably.
- How many keys you want cut, and whether you want all locks on one key.
- When and where you call. A planned weekday visit is different from an after-hours call, and distance matters. Palos Verdes Estates is about 24 miles from our Westwood storefront.
- Whether anything else is found while we are there, such as a loose strike plate or a worn latch. We tell you first and you decide.

Call (213) 577-1366Should you rekey or replace the lock?
This is the question we answer most. Rekeying is right when the lock itself is sound and the only concern is who holds a key. Replacement is right when the lock is damaged, worn, or not strong enough for what it protects.
If you want to upgrade rather than just change keys, our change locks and lock replacement pages cover those jobs. If you want a restricted keyway that makes unauthorized copying harder, see high-security locks. Those are different jobs with different parts and different cost factors, and we will not slide you into them if rekeying does what you need.
- Rekey when the hardware is in good shape and you just need new keys
- Replace when the lock is worn, cracked, loose, or badly corroded
- Upgrade when you want better security than the current lock offers
- Mix and match is fine. We often rekey the good locks and replace one or two weak ones in the same visit
Rekeying for landlords, tenants, and businesses
Apartment lock rekey and tenant turnover rekey work follows a simple pattern: each time a tenancy ends, the locks should change before the next person moves in. It is faster and lighter-cost than replacing hardware, and it keeps a clean record of who holds working keys. Landlords with several units can have everything keyed in a way that suits how they manage the property. We cover that in more detail on our locksmith for landlords page.
Business lock rekey and commercial rekey follow the same logic with higher stakes. When an employee leaves, a manager changes, or keys go missing, rekeying the storefront and back-door cylinders closes the gap without replacing the door hardware. If you need a structure where some keys open some doors and a master opens all, that is a separate system, and our commercial locksmith page explains what that involves.
One boundary to note: if you are locked out right now, rekeying is not the first step. Getting you back inside is. Our house lockout service handles that, and we can rekey once you are in.
Lock rekey in Palos Verdes Estates: older homes, salt air, and local scenarios
Palos Verdes Estates was master-planned in the 1920s, and the housing is almost entirely single-family. In Malaga Cove and Valmonte, many homes date from the 1920s through the 1940s in Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean styles. A lot of these houses still carry vintage mortise locks and original hardware. That matters for rekeying, because a mortise lock is not a simple cylinder swap. The cylinder and the lock body are separate parts, and whether we can rekey it in place depends on what is inside. In many cases we can keep the original hardware and just change the keying, which is exactly what most owners of these homes want.
Rekeying after a move is especially common in a place like this. A home in Valmonte or Malaga Cove may have changed hands only a few times over decades, and the number of old keys floating around can be larger than anyone knows. The same is true after estate sales and property transfers, one of the most typical scenarios here. Keys pass through family members, estate agents, and cleaners, and nobody has a firm count. Rekeying the whole house to one new key, without touching the original hardware, is usually the cleanest way to reset.
Montemalaga and Lunada Bay lean more toward mid-century ranch and view homes. The locks here are more likely to be standard modern deadbolts and knob sets, which are straightforward to rekey. Homes near Bluff Cove and the Lunada Bay bluffs face salt spray and persistent fog, which corrode exterior locks and hinges fastest. Corroded cylinders can be stiff or gritty, and a stiff lock is not a good rekey candidate until it is cleaned or repaired. Marine damp also swells older wood doors for much of the year, which can make a lock feel like it is failing when the real culprit is the door. We check both before we start. If the hardware is past its life, we will say so and point you to lock repair or replacement instead of rekeying something that will not hold.
Exterior changes in the city are reviewed by the Palos Verdes Homes Association art jury. Rekeying changes nothing visible from the street, which is one reason it suits owners who want to keep the original look of their doors. If you are thinking of changing exterior hardware itself, check with the association first.
For businesses, the Malaga Cove Plaza area has storefronts that need lock service too, and rekeying after a staffing change is a routine call. Whether it is a house in the 90274 ZIP code or a shop at the Plaza, the approach is the same: look at the lock, explain the options, and do the work properly.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles (Westwood) and mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including Palos Verdes Estates. When you call, you reach us directly. There is no dispatch middleman passing your job to whoever is free.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on older hardware especially, because mortise locks and vintage cylinders reward experience. A rushed job on a 1920s lock can damage something that cannot be easily replaced.
We answer the phone at (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year. If you need a locksmith in the middle of the night after losing keys, that is the same number.
One last practical point. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before they start work, and keep that habit with us too.
- In business since 1987
- Storefront in Westwood plus mobile vans

Need a key copy before the rekey?
Rekeying and key copying are different jobs. After a rekey, you will want enough new keys for everyone who needs one. We cut those at the time. If you need more later, our key duplication page explains how copies work and what to bring. Do not have copies cut from the old keys before a rekey, because they will stop working the moment we finish.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between rekeying and changing locks?
Rekeying keeps the existing lock hardware and changes the internal pins so a new key works and old keys do not. Changing locks means removing the old lock and installing a different one. Rekeying is usually the more economical route when the hardware is in good shape. Changing is better when the lock is worn, damaged, or you want a stronger one.
Do I need to rekey after buying a house in Palos Verdes Estates?
We recommend it. You cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist, and in a home that may have been in the same family for decades, the count can be large. Rekeying all house locks to one new key is a common first step after closing.
Can you rekey the old mortise locks in my Spanish Revival home?
Often yes. Many vintage mortise locks can be rekeyed without removing the original hardware, but it depends on the cylinder and the condition of the lock body. We look at each one in person and tell you honestly whether rekeying will work or whether repair or a different approach makes more sense.
Will salt air near Bluff Cove or Lunada Bay affect whether a lock can be rekeyed?
It can. Salt spray and fog corrode exterior locks and hinges, and a stiff or gritty cylinder may need cleaning or repair before it can be rekeyed properly. We check the condition first. If the lock is too far gone, we will recommend replacing it.
Can all my locks be rekeyed to one key?
In most cases, yes. We can match front, back, garage entry, and side gate locks to a single pattern, provided they are compatible cylinder types. Some specialty or very old locks may not be, and we will tell you which ones before we start.
How do I rekey after a tenant moves out?
Call us after the tenant returns the keys and before the next person moves in. We rekey each lock to a new pattern so any copies the previous tenant made no longer work. Landlords with several units can ask about a consistent system across properties.
Can you rekey the locks at my business?
Yes. We rekey storefront, back-door, and office cylinders after staff changes or lost keys. If you want a system where different keys open different doors, that is a master key setup, which is a separate job we can discuss.
How much does a rekey cost?
We do not give a figure over the web because it depends on how many locks you have, what type they are, their condition, how many keys you want, and when you call. Call (213) 577-1366 with those details and we will explain what applies to your situation.
Do you offer rekeying at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you lost your keys late at night and want the locks changed, call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out how to help.
