What do Chevrolet owners in Palmdale usually need?
Most Chevrolet calls from Palmdale fall into a few patterns. Someone has a truck or SUV with one key and the spare disappeared years ago. Someone's flip key has split at the hinge. Someone's smart fob battery has died and the dash keeps saying no remote detected. And now and then someone has lost every key, and the vehicle is parked somewhere inconvenient.
Where it happens matters. Locked-in-the-car problems tend to come from big shared lots, and the Antelope Valley Mall parking lots are a typical setting: you walk out with bags, and the key is on the seat or in a pocket you cannot find. A car left at the Palmdale Transportation Center park-and-ride can sit for a full workday, which is plenty of time for a key to get lost or a fob shell to crack in a bag. In east Palmdale, where apartment and duplex stock concentrates along Palmdale Boulevard and the eastside avenues, a missing key often means a car sitting in an assigned space at a complex with no easy way to move it.
Those are very different jobs. A cut-only key for an older truck is simple work. A 2021-and-newer smart fob that has to be validated through GM's servers is not. The first thing we do on the phone is sort out which of those you have, because it changes the tools, the steps, and the cost.
How does mobile Chevrolet key service work at the curb?
Our mobile vans carry key-cutting and programming equipment, so the work happens where the car is parked: a driveway, a mall lot, a park-and-ride, an apartment space. We work out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, which is about 59 miles from Palmdale, so when you call we tell you plainly how we will get to you and give an honest arrival estimate instead of a promise we cannot keep. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model, the model year, and what happened. If you can read the VIN from the dash or the driver's door jamb, that helps a great deal.
- We tell you which key system that Chevrolet most likely uses: no chip at all, an ID46 transponder, a 46E remote-head or flip key, or an ID49 smart fob. If your year falls on a boundary where catalogs disagree, we say so and confirm by VIN or in person.
- We ask you to show that the vehicle is yours before we make a key. This protects you as much as it protects us.
- We cut the key, either by code or from the lock, depending on what the car allows.
- If the car needs programming, we do it through the OBD-II port or use the onboard relearn where that is the right method for your model.
- We test everything before we leave: the key turns, the engine starts, the remote works, and the spare behaves the same way as the new key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which key system does your Chevrolet use?
Chevrolet's keys moved through four distinct eras, and the changeover year differs by model. That is why we go by your exact model and year rather than a rule of thumb. In plain terms:
- Passlock era, through the mid-2000s: GMT800 Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban (2000-2006), Impala (2000-2005), Malibu (2000-2003), first-generation Equinox (2005-2006) and first-generation Colorado (2004-2012). There is no chip in the key. The security sensor sits in the ignition lock cylinder, so a correctly cut key starts the vehicle with no programming.
- PK3+ 'circle-plus' ID46 transponder era: it arrived at different times per model, such as Malibu 2004, Impala 2006, GMT900 trucks and SUVs 2007, and Equinox 2007. These keys carry a Hitag2 chip that the car has to recognize.
- Global A, roughly 2010 to 2015 onward: Hitag2 Extended '46E' chips in remote-head keys, flip keys and the first proximity fobs. Examples include Cruze 2011, Malibu 2013, Silverado 2014, Tahoe and Suburban 2015, and Colorado 2015.
- Global B, from 2021: redesigned vehicles such as Tahoe and Suburban 2021, Colorado 2023 and Traverse 2024 use NXP ID49 smart fobs.
What about the newest Chevrolets and the disputed years?
For the newest redesigns, 2025 and later Equinox among them, one parts catalog lists Megamos AES ID88 keys. We treat that listing as unconfirmed, because catalogs disagree and we would rather tell you that than guess. Several 2021 to 2024 boundaries are also genuinely disputed between catalogs. If you own one of those years, expect us to ask for the VIN and to say honestly what we can confirm before we commit to a method.
The practical point for a Palmdale owner is this: the model year on your registration is a starting point, not the final answer. The same nameplate can use a plain cut key in one year and a server-validated smart fob a few years later.
What happens if you have lost every Chevrolet key?
All keys lost is stressful, but how hard it is depends almost entirely on the era of your vehicle.
On Passlock-era trucks and sedans, there is nothing to program. The key is cut by code, and the well-known relearn of three ten-minute cycles only applies after an ignition cylinder or module has been replaced. On PK3+ ID46 vehicles, an onboard relearn for all keys lost works without special tools, but it is slow. Programming through the OBD port with professional equipment is much faster, and that is how we prefer to do it.
Global A vehicles from roughly 2010 to 2020 are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools, and aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage for them is mature.
From 2021 on, Global B vehicles increasingly have key programming validated through GM's servers using ACDelco SPS2. Depending on the tool, all keys lost may require NASTF VSP-credentialed tooling or dealer service. We confirm current tool coverage for your vehicle on each job instead of assuming. The newest Megamos AES ID88 systems on 2025-and-later redesigns have immature aftermarket support and may be dealer-only or specialist-only for now. If your Chevrolet falls in that group, we will tell you up front rather than waste your time. More on that situation is on our page for lost car key replacement in Palmdale.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Chevrolet key in Palmdale?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your vehicle. These are the factors that actually move the cost:
- Key type: a cut-only Passlock key, a transponder key, a flip key, and a proximity smart fob are four very different products and levels of work.
- Vehicle era: ID46 and 46E systems are programmed through the OBD-II port, while 2021-and-later vehicles may involve server validation and more demanding tooling.
- All keys lost versus a spare: making an additional key when you still have a working one is usually the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
- Whether the lock itself is the problem: a worn ignition cylinder or a failed Passlock sensor is repair work, and a new key will not fix it.
- Number of keys: cutting and programming two keys in one visit is usually more efficient than coming back for a second.
- Time and distance: a middle-of-the-night call or a location far from our base costs more to serve than a daytime job, and Palmdale is about 59 miles from our storefront.
Should you go to a dealer or call a locksmith?
Both are legitimate choices, and we will say so. For the newest 2025-and-later redesigns, where aftermarket support is still immature, a dealer or specialist may be the only way to get a key. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take your call and then send you elsewhere after you have waited.
For most Chevrolets in the Passlock, ID46 and 46E eras, a mobile locksmith can do the entire job at your car. The main differences are practical. With a dealer, a car with no working key usually has to be towed, and you work around their schedule. With us, you stay put and the work comes to you, any day of the week. For 2021-and-newer vehicles, compare options and ask each shop whether they can actually complete the programming, since coverage varies by tool. If you have a dead fob but a working car, our page on key fob replacement in Palmdale explains what is involved.
What are the common Chevrolet key problems we see?
Not every key problem needs a new key. Some of the usual causes are cheaper to fix than a replacement, and some are the other way around:
- Failed Passlock sensors on 2000s models: the security light stays on, or the engine starts and then stalls, even with a perfectly good key.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage trucks and sedans: the key sticks or stops turning.
- Hardware-store copies cut for transponder-era cars without a chip: they open the doors but will not start the engine.
- Broken flip-key hinges and cracked remote-head or fob shells: the electronics inside often still work and can sometimes be moved to a new shell.
- Dead smart-fob batteries: the dash says 'no remote detected', but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently: the car starts one day and not the next.

Call (213) 577-1366Chevrolet key service across Palmdale
Palmdale is spread out, and housing and parking differ enough by area that the calls differ too. In west Palmdale, around Rancho Vista and the Antelope Valley Country Club Estates, you find large stucco tract homes that grew from the late 1980s through the 2000s. That is also where long-owned trucks and SUVs sit in driveways, and Passlock-era or ID46-era Silverados and Tahoes are exactly the kind of vehicle that ends up with one remaining key. Anaverde, the newer master-planned community in the southwest hills, tends to bring newer vehicles and smart fobs.
East Palmdale holds the older 1950s to 1980s housing tied to the aerospace industry, along with the apartment and duplex stock on Palmdale Boulevard and the eastside avenues. In shared parking, keys get lost or locked inside more often, and we can come to the space. We also work in Joshua Hills, Barrel Springs, the Civic Center area around Poncitlán Square, and nearby unincorporated areas such as Sun Village and Desert View Highlands. Our service covers ZIP codes 93550, 93551 and 93552.
The Antelope Valley climate adds its own wrinkles: very hot summers, freezing winter nights, and strong, dusty winds. Wind-blown grit shortens the life of exposed exterior locks, so a key that sticks in a door lock is sometimes a dirty or worn lock rather than a bad key, and we check that before cutting anything new. If you are locked out rather than keyless, see car lockout service in Palmdale. For the full list of what we do in the city, visit our Palmdale locksmith page.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Chevrolet?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new Chevrolet key if I have lost every key?
Usually yes, but it depends on the era. Passlock-era models are cut by code with no programming. ID46 and 46E vehicles are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. On 2021-and-newer vehicles we confirm current tool coverage per job, and on 2025-and-later redesigns the work may be dealer-only or specialist-only for now.
Does my older Silverado, Tahoe or Suburban need key programming?
If it is a GMT800 truck or SUV from 2000 to 2006, it uses the Passlock system. There is no chip in the key, so a correctly cut key starts it without programming. GMT900 models from 2007 onward use a transponder, which does need programming.
Why does my copied Chevrolet key open the door but not start the engine?
Most likely the copy was cut without a chip, and your car is from a transponder era. A hardware-store copy can turn the lock but cannot be recognized by the vehicle. It also can be a low-quality cloned chip that fails intermittently. We can tell you which it is after checking the key and the car.
My dash says 'no remote detected'. Do I need a new fob?
Often it is just a dead battery. The hidden emergency blade in a smart fob will still open the door. Try a new battery first. If the fob still is not detected, or the shell is cracked, we can look at repair or replacement. See our key fob replacement page.
Can you make a key for a 2025 or newer Chevrolet Equinox?
We will tell you honestly. One catalog lists these as Megamos AES ID88 keys, but catalogs disagree, so we treat that as unconfirmed and verify by VIN. Aftermarket support for these systems is immature, and a dealer or specialist may be the only option right now.
Will you come to the Antelope Valley Mall or the Transportation Center?
Yes. Our vans are mobile, so we come to the car wherever it is parked, whether that is a mall lot, the park-and-ride, a driveway or an apartment space. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us where you are and which Chevrolet you have.
How much does a replacement Chevrolet key cost?
It depends on the key type, the vehicle's era, whether you have a working spare, and whether tooling or server validation is required, plus time of day and distance. We do not post numbers online because they would not be accurate for your car. Call us with the model, year and VIN.
Is a dealer ever the better choice?
Sometimes, particularly for the newest redesigns with immature aftermarket support. For most older Chevrolets, a mobile locksmith can do the whole job at your car, with no tow. We will tell you on the phone which category yours falls into.
