What to do first when you are locked out of your apartment
Most apartment lockouts are not break-ins and not emergencies in the dramatic sense. Someone steps out to take the trash to the dumpster, the door swings shut, and the key is on the kitchen counter. Or a key is gone from a backpack somewhere between campus and home. Either way, you are standing in a hallway or on a walkway and want back inside without damaging anything.
Before you call anyone, take thirty seconds to check a few things. They can save you a service call, and they help us give you better directions when you do call.
- Try every door. A patio slider, a second entrance, or a door that was only latched and not deadbolted may be open.
- Call a roommate, partner, or family member who might be home or holding a spare.
- Check whether your building has an on-site manager, a maintenance office, or a lockbox with a spare. Many complexes do.
- Look at your lease or move-in paperwork for an after-hours maintenance number.
- Do not force the door, kick it, or pry at the frame. Damage to a door or jamb is almost always a bigger problem than the lockout was.
How does an apartment lockout call with Wilshire Lock & Key work?
When you call (213) 577-1366, a real person answers, any hour of any day. We ask a few plain questions: where you are, what kind of door and lock it is, whether the deadbolt is engaged, and whether you rent or own. Those answers tell us what tools to bring and whether we need to loop in your landlord or association before we start.
We are one company with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and our own mobile service vans. There is no call center passing your job to a stranger who works for someone else. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we work, and the standards on an apartment door are the same as on any other door.
- You call and describe the situation: building, unit, door type, and whether anyone else has a key.
- We confirm the details and tell you what we will need from you on arrival, such as photo ID and something that shows you live there.
- A technician drives to you in a mobile van and looks at the door before touching it.
- We verify that you are entitled to enter the unit, which may include contacting building management.
- We open the door with the least invasive method that works, protecting the lock, the door, and the frame.
- We test the lock after entry, and if it was damaged or the key is permanently lost, we talk through repair, rekeying, or new keys before doing any of it.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Why we ask you to prove you live there
This part surprises people, so here is the honest version. A locksmith who opens any door for anyone who asks is a risk to every tenant in the building. We ask for ID and for something that connects you to the unit: a lease, a utility bill, mail, a rental portal screenshot, or a call from your property manager.
If you rent, we may also want to hear from the manager or owner. That is not us making your day harder. It protects you, because it means nobody can talk their way into your apartment the same way. If you cannot produce paperwork at 2 a.m., tell us anyway. There are usually ways to verify, and we will say plainly what we can and cannot do.
- Photo ID with a matching or nearby address helps, but a new move-in may not have one yet. A lease or move-in email can fill the gap.
- Roommates: if your name is not on the lease, we may need the leaseholder or management to approve entry.
- If we cannot verify that you have the right to enter, we will not open the door. We would rather lose a job than open the wrong unit.
How we open the door without wrecking it
Non-destructive entry is the goal on every apartment door. Most apartment entry doors have a spring latch, a deadbolt, or both, and many have a knob or lever with a keyed cylinder. What we do depends on which of those is actually locked.
If only the spring latch is engaged, the door can often be opened with a bypass technique in a short job that leaves no marks. If the deadbolt is thrown, we typically pick the cylinder or use a method matched to that lock. Higher-grade deadbolts take more care and time than a basic builder-grade one, and we would rather say so up front than pretend every door is a thirty-second job.
Drilling a lock is a last resort, used when a lock is damaged, jammed, or has been tampered with, and it means the lock will need to be replaced. If we think that is where a job is heading, we tell you before we do it, not after.
- Spring latch only: usually the simplest and least invasive opening.
- Deadbolt engaged: picking or a lock-specific method, with more time and skill involved.
- Key broken off inside the lock: that is a different problem, and our broken key extraction service covers it.
- Door warped, frame shifted, or lock worn out: the lockout may be a symptom, and we show you what we found.

Call (213) 577-1366Condo lockouts and the building-management side
A condo lockout looks like an apartment lockout from the hallway, but the ownership picture is different. You own the unit, yet the building, the common areas, the entry gates, and sometimes the exterior door hardware belong to the association. That affects what we can touch and who needs to know.
In general, we work on the lock to your own unit. Lobby doors, fob readers, garage gates, and shared-area locks usually belong to the association or its management company, and changes to them go through them. When a job touches both sides, for example your unit door and a building-issued key, we coordinate with management so nothing is done that violates the building's rules.
If you rent and the lock has to be rekeyed or replaced after a lost key, check with your landlord first. Lease terms vary, and some landlords require their own approved hardware or a copy of any new key. We are happy to talk to the manager directly and keep everything above board.
What affects the cost of an apartment lockout?
We do not quote numbers in a web page because a fair price depends on the actual door, and a flat figure printed here would be a guess. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost, so you can see why a quote is what it is and ask good questions.
When you call, ask for a quote based on your situation. A straightforward latch opening is usually the more economical route, and that is the usual case for a door that simply swung shut.
- Time of day: nights, weekends, and holidays involve more of our after-hours coverage than a weekday afternoon.
- Where you are and how far a van has to travel. Northridge is roughly 20 miles from our Westwood base.
- Lock and door type: a basic knob latch differs from a high-security deadbolt or a multi-point setup.
- Whether the deadbolt is thrown, which changes how the door has to be opened.
- Whether the lock was damaged, which could mean repair or replacement.
- What happens after entry: a new key, a rekey, or a replacement cylinder are separate jobs from the opening itself.
- Whether building management coordination adds extra steps for verifying entry.
Apartment lockouts in Northridge: what we see around here
Northridge has two ZIP codes, 91324 and 91325, and the housing in them is a patchwork. There are 1950s and 60s ranch tracts, and student-oriented apartment complexes concentrate around the CSUN campus area. The 1994 earthquake took its name from this neighborhood, and much of the multifamily stock was repaired or rebuilt afterward. That means door frames and hardware vary a lot in age. One building may have newer deadbolts, while the complex next door still runs original hardware that has been rekeyed many times.
Student housing near CSUN is where lockouts spike. At semester move-in and move-out, people are juggling boxes, new keys, and unfamiliar doors, and keys get lost or left inside. High turnover also wears locks out. A cylinder that has been handed to many tenants over the years can stick, bind, or fail in the cold start of a morning, and that can look like a lockout when the lock is the actual problem. If you manage a complex like that, our locksmith for landlords page covers turnover rekeying and key control.
Heat matters here too. North Valley summers are long and hot, and sun-exposed doors expand, which can make a deadbolt drag against its strike plate. Fall Santa Ana wind events are another reason a door might close behind you in a way you did not intend. If your door has started to stick, mention it when you call. We can look at the alignment after we get you in.
We also get calls from apartment buildings along the Reseda Boulevard, Nordhoff Street, and Tampa Avenue corridors, and from residents near the Northridge Metrolink station area and the Northridge Fashion Center district. If you live in a ranch-style home in the Devonshire Street corridor tracts instead of an apartment, our house lockout service is the better match.

Call (213) 577-1366After you are back inside: the lost key problem
Getting the door open solves tonight's problem. It does not solve what happened to the key. If your key is simply on your kitchen counter, you are fine. If it fell out of your bag somewhere between a campus parking structure and a bus stop, anybody who finds it and knows your building could try it. That risk depends on whether your address is attached to the key, and most are not, but it is worth thinking about.
If the key is truly lost, rekeying the lock makes the old key useless without replacing the hardware. Our lock rekey service does that, and with the right paperwork or landlord permission, it is usually quicker and more economical than replacing the entire lock. We can also make spare keys, so you are not calling us again next month. Our key duplication service covers that.
A practical habit: leave a spare with someone you trust, and not under a mat or in a planter. Those are the first places anyone checks.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Locksmith work is not a side project for us. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and mobile service vans, which means we can handle the job on the spot and also back it up with a real shop.
When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch broker who subcontracts the job and adds a middleman fee. Our mobile locksmith vans carry the tools for most apartment doors, and our 24-hour locksmith line is answered all day and night, year-round.
One more thing we say to every customer: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work. That is a normal request and a good habit, whoever you call.
Frequently asked questions
Can you open my apartment door if I am not on the lease?
Usually only with approval from the leaseholder or building management. We need to be confident you have the right to be in the unit. If you are a roommate, a family member, or a guest, call the leaseholder or manager first, and we will work with them.
What do I need to show the technician?
Photo ID and something connecting you to the unit, such as a lease, utility bill, mail, or a message from your property manager. If you are newly moved in and have none of those yet, tell us when you call and we will discuss what other verification might work.
Will opening the door damage my lock?
In most cases, no. We start with the least invasive method, and many apartment lockouts end with the lock intact. Drilling is a last resort for damaged or jammed locks, and we tell you before doing it.
Do I need to contact my landlord before calling you?
It is often smart to check, since some complexes have an on-site manager or after-hours maintenance line that can help. If they cannot reach you quickly or the lockout is outside their hours, call us. We can also contact the landlord ourselves if the job needs their approval.
I am locked out of a condo. Is the process different?
The opening itself is similar, but the association may control common-area doors, gate fobs, and building rules. We work on your own unit's lock and coordinate with management when the job touches anything the association owns.
Can you help students near CSUN during move-in and move-out?
Yes. Those periods bring a lot of lost keys and unfamiliar locks. Have your ID and lease or housing paperwork ready, and tell us whether the complex is managed on-site so we can verify entry.
How much does an apartment lockout cost in Northridge?
It depends on the time of day, your location, the lock and door type, and whether the deadbolt is thrown or anything is damaged. A simple latch opening is usually the more economical case. Call (213) 577-1366 and describe your door, and we will explain the quote for your actual situation.
What if my key broke off in the lock?
That is a separate problem from a plain lockout, because the broken piece has to come out of the cylinder. We handle it as broken key extraction, and we try to save the lock where possible.
I am locked out of my car too. Can you help with that?
Yes, but that is a different service. Our car lockout page explains how we handle vehicles, and you can call the same number.
