What does a lock rekey actually do?
Rekeying keeps the lock you already own and changes which key opens it. Inside a pin-tumbler cylinder, the kind found in most house deadbolts, knob sets and padlocks, sit small spring-loaded pins of different lengths. The right key lifts each pin to the exact height that lets the cylinder turn. When we rekey, we take the cylinder apart, replace the pins with a new combination, and cut a new key to match. The old key still slides in, but it no longer turns anything.
The hardware stays on the door. Same deadbolt, same handle set, same finish. The only thing that changes is who holds a working key. That is why rekeying is usually the more economical route when your locks are in good shape and the real problem is keys floating around that you cannot account for.
A rekey can also bring several locks onto a single key. If your front deadbolt, back door and side gate each take a different key, we can pin them all alike so one key runs the whole house. If you would rather keep certain doors separate, such as a shed, a rental unit or a garage, we can do that too. It is your call, and we will explain the tradeoff either way.
When should you rekey your locks?
Most rekeys are not emergencies. They are a decision about who still has access to your door. These are the situations we hear about most often from people in Monrovia and the surrounding area:
- Rekey locks after buying a house. Previous owners, agents, contractors, cleaners and relatives may all have held copies, and there is no reliable way to know how many exist.
- Rekey locks after moving into a rental or apartment. If your landlord has not changed the cylinders since the last resident, ask them to, or talk to us about what is allowed under your lease.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out. For owners, tenant turnover rekey is the cleanest way to make sure a former resident's keys are just metal.
- Rekey locks after losing keys. Even if the keys went missing on a trail or in a parking lot, a rekey removes the question of who might find them and where they fit.
- After a breakup, a roommate leaving, or a contractor or employee finishing up. Anyone who held a key and no longer needs access is a reason to rekey.
- When you want fewer keys to carry. Rekeying all house locks to one key is a common request even without any security concern.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we rekey your locks, step by step?
The process is straightforward, and you are welcome to watch. Here is how a typical visit goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366, which is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us how many locks are involved, whether they are deadbolts, knobs or levers, whether it is a house, apartment or business, and whether keys are lost or just unaccounted for.
- We look at each lock when we arrive. We check that it operates smoothly and that the cylinder is in good enough condition to be rekeyed rather than replaced.
- We explain what we found and what the job involves, including the factors that shape the cost, before any work begins.
- We remove each cylinder and pin it to the new combination. If you want all your locks keyed alike, we match them to a single key pattern.
- We cut the new keys and test every lock with them. We also confirm that your old key no longer turns the cylinder.
- We check how each door actually closes and locks: whether the bolt throws fully, whether the strike plate lines up, and whether the handle works freely. If something outside the cylinder is the problem, we tell you plainly rather than leaving you with a rekeyed lock on a door that still will not latch.
- We hand over the keys and talk through extras. If you need more copies, key duplication is simple once the locks are rekeyed, and it is better to cut spares from the new key than to have old copies in circulation.
Should you rekey, or replace the lock instead?
Rekeying is not always the right answer, and we will tell you when it is not. It makes sense when the locks are working, solid and you simply want different keys. It does not make sense in a few cases.
If a deadbolt is loose, bent, worn or hard to turn even with a fresh key, new pins will not fix the problem. In that case lock replacement is the honest recommendation. If you want to change the style, finish or function of your hardware at the same time, changing the locks gives you that opportunity. And some very old or unusual cylinders cannot be rekeyed reliably, or replacement parts are not available.
There is one more point worth being clear about. A rekey changes the keys, not the quality of the lock. If your existing deadbolt is a basic grade and you are worried about picking, drilling or forced entry, a rekey will not make it any tougher. If that is your concern, look at high-security locks, which are a different job. Many people do a rekey now and upgrade a door or two later, and that is a perfectly sensible way to spread the work out.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of rekeying locks in Monrovia?
We do not publish numbers on a web page because the real figure depends on your situation, and a flat quote that ignores the details would not be honest. Here is what actually moves the cost of a rekey:
- How many cylinders you have. Rekeying a single front door is a smaller job than rekeying every lock on a house, a duplex or a row of units.
- The type of lock. Standard deadbolts and knob sets are generally the simpler jobs. Mortise locks, specialty cylinders and older hardware can take more time and care.
- Whether you want everything keyed alike. Matching all locks to one key is common and works well, but it affects how we pin the cylinders.
- How many keys you need cut. A single household and a property manager with several units have very different needs.
- The condition of the locks. A clean, smooth cylinder rekeys easily. One that is dirty, worn or damaged may need extra work or a part replaced.
- The time of day. Because we answer 24/7, we can come out at night or on weekends, and after-hours service can be priced differently than a daytime appointment.
- Travel. Monrovia is about 29 miles from our Westwood storefront, so location is part of the conversation when we schedule and quote.
What is rekeying like for homes and apartments around Monrovia?
Monrovia is a city of very different housing types, and the right approach to a rekey changes with the building. Everything here falls within ZIP code 91016, but the doors vary a lot from one part of town to another.
North of Foothill Boulevard, the city keeps a deep stock of Victorian, Craftsman and early-1900s homes, and an active historic preservation program protects many of them. Hillside houses climb toward the Monrovia Highlands. For a homeowner in one of these houses, rekeying has a particular appeal: the original or period-style hardware stays on the door, and only the working parts inside change. In older houses it is common to find a mix of locks from different eras on different doors, each with its own key. A rekey is a good chance to bring that ring of mismatched keys down to one or two. We inspect legacy hardware individually first, because not every older lock can be rekeyed, and we will say so honestly if one cannot.
South Monrovia is mostly smaller postwar houses and apartment buildings. Apartment rekeys in South Monrovia complexes are a regular type of request, usually when a unit turns over or a resident has lost a key. For a single apartment lock rekey, the job is typically quick and tidy, and you can have the same locks in place with new keys the same visit.
Around Station Square near the Metro A Line, newer townhome projects have gone up. If you have just bought or moved into one of these townhomes, it is reasonable to rekey as part of move-in, since you cannot be sure who held keys during construction, sales and any prior ownership. The hardware in newer developments is usually more current, which generally makes the work simple.
The Huntington Drive, Myrtle Avenue and Foothill Boulevard corridors mix homes, apartments and commercial space, and we work across all of them. Whether you are near Old Town Monrovia, Monrovia Highlands or the area near Mayflower Village, the question is the same: who has keys, and do you want them to?
One local note on climate. Monrovia has a San Gabriel Valley foothill climate, with hot summers and periodic Santa Ana winds off the mountains. The realistic effects on locks are heat-driven door swelling and wind-blown dust, not coastal corrosion. Since we have the cylinder apart during a rekey, we clean out dust and grit and check that it turns smoothly. If your door sticks in summer because the wood has swelled, that is a door and strike alignment issue rather than a key issue. We will point it out so you are not blaming the lock.

Call (213) 577-1366How does tenant turnover rekey work for landlords and property managers?
If you own a rental, rekeying between tenants is one of the most practical routine steps you can take. A previous resident may have given copies to friends, family or roommates over the years. A rekey makes all of those copies useless in one visit, and it is far lighter than replacing every lock.
For landlords with a few units, we can rekey each door and cut fresh keys for the incoming tenant. For apartment buildings, we can rekey a whole run of units in one trip. You can decide whether every unit gets its own key, or whether certain shared doors, such as laundry rooms or entry gates, share a key. If you manage multiple properties or turn over units regularly, locksmith service for landlords covers the broader picture, including how to schedule recurring work.
Rekeying can happen at any hour. If a tenant leaves in the evening and the new one is arriving the next morning, you do not have to wait for a business-hours appointment. We answer the phone around the clock at (213) 577-1366, and we can plan around your turnover schedule rather than ours.
Can you rekey commercial and business locks?
Yes. A commercial rekey follows the same principle as a house rekey, applied to doors with heavier use. Business lock rekey requests usually come from an employee leaving, a manager changing, a lease starting, or a set of keys that has grown beyond anyone's control.
In Old Town Monrovia, along Myrtle Avenue, storefronts deal with front doors that open and close all day, plus back doors and office doors that may have been keyed over the years by different people. A commercial lock rekey lets you retake control without replacing the storefront hardware. The same goes for businesses along Huntington Drive and Foothill Boulevard. If you want more structure, such as different employees with access to different doors, a master key system can be built so that one key opens everything and others open only specific areas.
Rekeying cylinders is one part of commercial door work. If you also have a sticking closer, a worn panic bar or a damaged storefront lock, those are separate repairs. Our commercial locksmith page covers the full range of what we do for businesses, and we are happy to handle the rekey first and flag any other issues we see while we are there.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987, and rekeying is one of the oldest and most basic things a locksmith does. It is also easy to do badly, with the wrong pins, a sloppy reassembly, or a rushed test. We take the time to test every lock with the new key and confirm the old one is dead.
We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Monrovia included. When you call, you reach us, not a national call center that sells your job to whoever picks it up. We are one company with no dispatch middlemen, which means the person who quotes you is accountable for the work. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we do things.
One practical tip that applies to any locksmith you hire: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins. It is a reasonable question and a good habit. Also be wary of anyone who quotes an unusually low figure on the phone and then changes it on your doorstep. Ask what the quote includes, and ask for the full scope up front.
If you want to see where else we work, our Monrovia locksmith page gives the overview, and you can call us at (213) 577-1366 at any hour.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rekey a lock?
It depends on how many locks you have and their condition. A single deadbolt is a smaller job than a whole house or a set of apartment units. When you call (213) 577-1366, tell us how many cylinders and what type, and we will give you a realistic sense of the work before we start.
Do I need to be home while you rekey my locks?
Someone should be there to let us in and to receive the new keys, but it does not have to be you if you arrange for a trusted person to be present. For rentals, we can coordinate with a property manager or the incoming tenant.
Can you rekey my locks if I have lost all my keys?
Often yes, but the lock has to be accessible. If you are locked out first, we deal with that before the rekey, and our house lockout service covers that situation. Once we are in, we can rekey the cylinders so the lost keys no longer work.
Can all my doors be rekeyed to the same key?
In most cases, yes. Standard residential deadbolts and knob sets can usually be pinned to a single key pattern. Some older or specialty locks may not match, and we will tell you if one of yours needs a different solution.
What is the difference between rekeying and changing locks?
Rekeying keeps your existing lock and changes the internal pins and the key. Changing the lock means removing the hardware and installing a new one. Rekeying is generally the lighter option when the locks are sound, while replacement makes sense when hardware is worn, damaged or you want an upgrade.
Can you rekey old Victorian or Craftsman door hardware?
Sometimes. Many older homes have a mix of original and later locks. We inspect each one first and tell you honestly whether it can be rekeyed reliably. If a lock cannot be, we will explain the options rather than force a poor result.
Does rekeying make my lock more secure against picking or forced entry?
No. A rekey makes old keys useless, which solves the problem of unknown keys in circulation. It does not change how pick-resistant or drill-resistant the lock is. If you want better protection, you would look at a different lock rather than a rekey.
Do you rekey locks for businesses, not just homes?
Yes. We handle commercial rekeys for storefronts, offices and back doors, including setups where different people need access to different doors. Businesses in Old Town and along the main Monrovia corridors are part of our regular service area.
Should I ask a locksmith for a license before hiring them?
Yes. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work starts. It is a normal question, and a reputable company will not mind answering it.
