What counts as a business lockout in Malibu?

A business lockout is any situation where you or your staff can't get through a commercial door that you have every right to open. It is a different problem from a house lockout, because the door, the hardware, and the stakes are different. A locked front door at a home costs you an evening. A locked front door at a shop costs you the morning's customers, a delivery window, or a day of payroll.

We get calls for the same handful of situations, and it helps to name them so you know we've seen yours before:

  • The key is missing, left inside, or was taken by a former employee who never returned it.
  • The key goes in but won't turn, usually from a worn cylinder, a bent key, or corrosion inside the lock.
  • The key snapped off in the lock. If that is your situation, mention it on the phone, because it changes the tools we bring. We cover that separately under broken key extraction.
  • A storefront gate, glass door, or rear service door has stopped latching or unlatching properly.
  • An electronic keypad or access reader has failed and the door is staying locked.
  • A lock was changed or tampered with, and nobody on site has a working key.

What should you do first when you're locked out of your business?

Before you call anyone, take two minutes to check a few things. They can save you a service call, and they help us prepare if you do need one.

None of this replaces calling a locksmith if you truly can't get in. It simply keeps you from paying for something a quick check could have solved.

  • Try every other entrance: a rear door, a side door, a loading door, or a door shared with a neighbor or property manager.
  • Call whoever else holds a key, such as a co-owner, a manager, a landlord, or a building engineer.
  • Look at the door itself. Is the latch sticking, is the glass cracked, is the frame visibly out of square?
  • Note what kind of lock you see: a standard deadbolt, a keypad, a panic bar on the inside, or a gate with a padlock.
  • Have your proof of authority ready, whether that is a lease, a business license, a utility bill, or a photo ID that connects you to the business.

How do we open a locked business door, step by step?

Our process is the same whether the door belongs to a single-chair salon or a multi-tenant office suite. What changes is the hardware and how much care the door needs.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. We ask where you are in Malibu, what kind of door it is, whether there's a key problem or a hardware failure, and whether anyone is in danger or the building is unsecured. Tell us if there's an alarm that will sound.
  2. We give you an honest arrival window based on where our vans are and the distance to you. Malibu is roughly 17 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we'd rather tell you that plainly than promise something unrealistic.
  3. On arrival, the technician confirms you're authorized to have the door opened. We ask for ID and something that ties you to the business or property. This protects you as much as it protects the owner.
  4. We inspect the lock, door, and frame before touching anything, then choose the least destructive method that will work for that hardware.
  5. Once the door is open, we test the lock and latch. If the lock is worn, corroded, or damaged, we tell you what it needs and give you the choice between repair, rekeying, or replacement.
  6. We secure the door before we leave. If the lock can't be fixed on the spot, we work out a safe way to lock the premises until it can be.

Can you get in without damaging the door?

Usually, yes. Most commercial locks can be opened by picking, by working the latch with the right bypass tool, or by decoding the cylinder, and none of that harms the door. That's the method we try first. A good technician spends the first few minutes reading the hardware instead of reaching for a drill.

There are honest exceptions. A lock that's seized from corrosion, a cylinder that's been jammed with debris, a high-security cylinder built to resist picking, or a deadbolt that's been installed badly can all force a different approach. In those cases, drilling the cylinder is sometimes the cleaner and faster option, and it's repaired by replacing the cylinder, which you'd likely want to do anyway. We'll tell you before we drill, and we'll explain why.

Glass storefront doors deserve a special mention. The lock is often a small cylinder in a metal rail beside the glass, and it's easy to damage the whole door if somebody rushes. We work those slowly. Breaking the glass is not a method we'd reach for. It costs more than the lockout and leaves the business open to the street.

If the issue is a failed latch, a loose strike, or a door that's dropped out of alignment, that's a hardware problem more than a lockout. We'll get you in and then talk about storefront lock repair so the problem doesn't repeat tomorrow.

How much does a business lockout cost in Malibu?

We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the door in front of us. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down, so nothing surprises you.

When you call, describe the door as best you can and we'll explain how the charges would apply to your situation before a technician is dispatched. If anything changes on site, such as a different lock than described, the technician tells you before starting the work, not after.

If you're comparing options, note that opening the door without damage and then rekeying or repairing the lock is usually the more economical route compared with forcing entry and replacing a whole door or frame.

  • The type of lock: a standard keyed deadbolt is quicker than a high-security cylinder or a multi-point lock on a commercial door.
  • The door material: wood, hollow metal, aluminum storefront, or glass each need different handling.
  • Whether a key is stuck or broken inside the cylinder.
  • Time of day. Nights, weekends, and holidays involve a technician pulled away from other plans, and that is reflected in the service call.
  • Distance and travel to your location from where our vans are working.
  • What happens after entry: just opening the door, or also rekeying, repairing, or replacing hardware, and the parts needed for it.
  • Whether the door needs to be secured temporarily because the lock can't be restored on the spot.

Why does a lockout in Malibu look different from one inland?

Malibu is a coastal microclimate. The marine layer, fog, and salt air corrode locks, hinges, and other exterior metal noticeably faster than they do inland, and damp conditions can swell wood doors until they bind in the frame. A lock that was fine a few years ago may now turn stiffly, drag, or finally refuse to turn. A lot of the lockouts we see in coastal areas are really the end of a lock's life, not a lost key.

That matters for your business in practical ways. If your key has started to feel gritty or you have to lean on the door to get it to latch, that's the warning. A corroded cylinder can seize with the door locked, and then you're calling us at opening time. Replacing worn hardware on your schedule is far easier than fixing it on a bad morning.

Here is how that plays out across the areas we serve:

  • Storefront lock service around Malibu Country Mart and the Civic Center area often involves glass doors, exterior rails, and rear service entrances that sit in coastal air all year. Sticking cylinders and tired latches are common causes of business lockouts there.
  • If you run a business from a property in Malibu Colony, Point Dume, or Paradise Cove, you may deal with a guard gate, a private access point, or a gate keypad in addition to the front door. Tell us which of those has failed so we bring the right tools.
  • Canyon properties off Latigo Canyon and Corral Canyon roads may have long driveways and gate keypads. If a business or home office up there has a gate that won't open, say so on the call.
  • Vacation rental operators near the Zuma Beach area face turnover lockouts, and we do separate work for them; see our page on vacation rental locksmith service.
  • Rebuilt properties after the Woolsey Fire and the January 2025 Palisades Fire on the city's eastern edge often have brand-new hardware. New locks rarely fail from age, but a misaligned door or a keypad that wasn't programmed correctly can still keep someone outside.

Business lockouts across Malibu's ZIP codes and neighborhoods

We cover Malibu's ZIP codes, including 90265 and 90263, and the neighborhoods stretched along the coast and up into the canyons. A commercial building lockout in the Civic Center area is a very different trip from one up a canyon road, and we plan for that when you call.

For a storefront near Malibu Country Mart, a single technician in a mobile van normally carries what's needed for glass doors, deadbolts, and most commercial cylinders. For a gated property in Malibu Colony or an office tucked into Point Dume, the question is access. Can the technician get through the gate, is there a code, and is someone on site who can confirm you're authorized? Answering those on the phone makes the arrival smooth.

If you're trying to reach a property in the hills near Serra Retreat, Latigo Canyon, or Trancas Canyon, tell us the closest cross street or access road, whether the gate has a keypad, and whether your phone gets signal near the door. We've found that a clear address and a callback number are the two things that speed up service most in places where directions get tricky.

If we're also dealing with the building's broader security, we'll point you toward the right service. For a full overview of what we do for businesses, see our commercial locksmith page, or the general Malibu locksmith page for everything else we handle in the city.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a business lockout?

Plenty of companies will answer a phone and promise to send someone. Here is what's actually different about us, with nothing exaggerated:

  • We've been in business since 1987. We've opened a lot of doors, and the hardware on commercial doors hasn't surprised us in a long time.
  • We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles (Westwood), plus mobile service vans. You're dealing with an established shop, not a phone number with no address behind it.
  • We're one company. There's no dispatcher passing your job to a middleman who passes it to a stranger. The people who answer work with the technicians who come out.
  • David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If a job is unusual or a decision needs a second opinion, it goes to him.
  • The line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366.
  • We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so we're used to long drives and unfamiliar addresses.

How do you check that a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), known as an LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for that license number before they start work, whether it's us or someone else. A legitimate company will give it to you without hesitation.

Some other signs are worth watching for. Be cautious of anyone who won't give a company name when answering, who insists on a total over the phone without asking about the lock, or who starts drilling the moment they arrive. A reputable technician looks at the door, explains what they plan to do, and asks who you are before opening anything. If someone offers to open a commercial door without asking for any proof you're authorized, that should concern you, since the same ease could let someone else in.

How can you prevent the next business lockout?

Once you're back inside, it's worth fifteen minutes to figure out why it happened. Most commercial lockouts trace back to one of a few fixable causes.

If you've had a recurring problem with a former employee's key, a lost key, or too many people holding copies, a master key system lets you control who can open what, and rekeying makes old keys useless. If keys are a constant headache, access control installation replaces them with codes or cards you can turn off instantly.

If the hardware is the weak point, such as worn closers, bent strikes, or tired latches in coastal air, commercial door hardware is where we'd start. Salt and fog are hard on exterior metal, and replacing it before it fails is a lot cheaper than an emergency.

Keep one spare key somewhere secure and off-site with someone you trust. And if your business has a number of doors, label the keys clearly so nobody is fumbling with the wrong one at 6 a.m.

Frequently asked questions

Can you open my business door at night or on a holiday?

Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year, including holidays. Nights and holidays can change how the service call is charged, and we explain that when you call.

How quickly can you get to Malibu?

Malibu is roughly 17 miles from our Westwood storefront, and we have mobile vans on the road. We won't give you a made-up number over the phone. We give you a realistic arrival window once we know where you are and where our nearest technician is working.

Do I need to prove I own or run the business?

Yes. We ask for ID and something connecting you to the business or property, such as a lease, a business license, or a utility bill. If you're an employee or manager without paperwork on you, we may ask you to reach the owner or landlord to confirm. It's to protect you and the owner.

Will you have to drill or damage my door?

Most of the time, no. We try picking and bypass methods first, which leave the door intact. Drilling is sometimes the cleaner choice for a seized or corroded lock, and we explain it before we do it. Coastal salt air makes that more common than inland.

Can you open a glass storefront door?

Yes. We work on the small cylinders and rail locks common on glass doors, with care to avoid damage to the glass or frame. If the lock fails often, our storefront lock repair service is the natural follow-up.

What if my key broke off inside the lock?

Tell us when you call. A broken key changes the tools we bring. We usually remove the broken piece, open the door, and check whether the cylinder is still good or needs to be replaced.

Can you come to a gated or hard-to-reach property?

Yes, as long as we know how to get in. Give us the gate code or a contact who can open it, the closest cross street, and a callback number. That's especially useful in canyon and gated areas such as Malibu Colony or the Latigo Canyon side of town.

Do you also change or rekey the lock after getting me in?

If you want. Many owners rekey after a lockout, especially if a key went missing or an employee left. We'll give you the options for repair, rekeying, or replacement, and you decide. For a wider view of our business services, see our commercial locksmith page.

How do I know your company is a legitimate locksmith?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for the number before work begins. You can also check that the company has a real address. Ours is 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024, and we've been in business since 1987.
