What does key duplication actually involve?

Key duplication sounds like the simplest job a locksmith does, and in some ways it is. You hand over a working key, and you get back one or more keys that do the same thing. But the quality of that copy depends on a few details that most people never see: the blank we choose, how the original is held in the machine, how the cuts are deburred, and whether the finished key is tested in a lock before it goes in your pocket.

This page covers the everyday work: house key copies, spare house keys, apartment key copies, office and commercial keys, deadbolt keys, mailbox keys, and the keys that carry restrictions, such as high security and restricted keyways. We also cut keys at our shop and, when it makes more sense, bring the machine to you. If what you really need is a new lock, a rekey, or a car key, those are separate services, and I will point you to them where they fit.

I am David, the owner and lead technician here, and the company has been cutting keys in Los Angeles since 1987. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and we run mobile service vans to Lake Balboa and about 140 other cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock, every day of the year.

Why does the quality of a key copy matter?

A copy is only as good as the key it was made from. Every time a key is duplicated from a copy of a copy, small errors stack up. A cut that is off by a hair on the original can end up noticeably off on the third generation, and that is when you hear people say a key works only if you jiggle it, lift the door, or hold it halfway out. That jiggling wears the pins inside the lock and can eventually leave a worn-out key stuck in the cylinder.

Two problems come up again and again with hurried copies. The first is a key that turns stiffly or only partway. The second is a key that works fine in the lock it was copied from but drags in a second lock keyed alike, because the cuts are within tolerance on one cylinder and just outside it on another. Neither is dramatic, but both are avoidable.

Postwar door hardware makes this more noticeable. Older cylinders that have seen decades of use have a little wear built in. A fresh, accurate key often feels better in a tired lock than the worn original does, which is one reason we like to cut from a clean, well-kept key when we can, and why we tell you honestly if your original is worn enough that the copy will inherit the problem.

How do we duplicate a key, step by step?

Here is the process whether you walk into the shop or we come to you with a van. The mobile version is the same work; the machine just travels. If you would rather not leave the house or the office, our mobile locksmith service can handle the cutting on site.

  1. Look at the key. We check the brand stamped on the head, the keyway shape, and any markings that suggest a restricted or patented system.
  2. Check the condition. A bent, cracked, or heavily worn key makes a poor master for copying, so we say so before we cut anything.
  3. Choose the correct blank. The blank has to match the keyway of your lock, not just look similar. Many keys that look alike do not fit the same cylinders.
  4. Cut the copy. The original is clamped and traced against the new blank, and the cuts are made to the original depths and spacing.
  5. Deburr and clean. Rough metal edges catch inside the lock and shed brass shavings, so we clean the key before it is used.
  6. Test it. We try the finished key in a lock whenever one is available, and if we are on site, we test it in your actual door.
  7. Cut extras if you want them. If a second or third copy is wanted for family, a tenant, or a dog walker, we cut each from the original rather than from the first copy.

Which keys can we copy, and which need extra steps?

Most house keys, deadbolt keys, padlock keys, and standard office keys are straightforward. Some are not, and I would rather you hear that from me now than discover it at the counter.

A duplicate deadbolt key is cut the same way as any other, but deadbolts are often keyed differently than the knob below them. If your front door has a separate deadbolt and handle set, tell us whether you need one key or both, and bring the key for each.

  • Standard house and apartment keys: usually cut on the spot, as long as we have the correct blank for the keyway.
  • Deadbolt keys: same process, but we check that the blank matches the deadbolt cylinder specifically.
  • High security key duplication: these keys, such as ones with sidebar or dimple cuts, need specialty blanks and often specialty machines. Some are copied only with authorization. See our overview of high security locks for how these systems work.
  • Restricted key duplication: restricted keyways are controlled by the manufacturer, and copies are normally made only for the registered owner, often with a card or letter. If your key is restricted, we will tell you what the system requires. We cannot promise to copy a restricted key without that authorization.
  • Keys stamped Do Not Duplicate: the stamp is not a lock, and it does not by itself stop a machine. It is a request from whoever issued the key. We may decline to copy it, and if the key belongs to your employer or landlord, we will usually ask you to get their permission first.
  • Mailbox keys: many private mailbox and apartment-building mailbox keys are simple to cut. Postal-controlled locks are different and are handled by the postal service, so we will tell you which situation you have.
  • Automotive keys: a plain metal car key is a key-cutting job, but most modern car keys have electronics that need more than a cut. For those, see our car key replacement work.

What affects the cost of key duplication?

I do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the key in your hand. What I can do is explain exactly what moves the cost up or down, so nothing surprises you.

The biggest factor is the type of key. A common brass house key on a standard blank is the lighter-cost end of the range. Restricted, high security, and specialty keys cost more because the blanks are controlled, the cutting equipment is more specialized, and the paperwork takes time.

The second factor is quantity. Cutting several copies in one visit is usually the more economical route than coming back repeatedly. The third is where the work happens: bringing the key to our storefront is generally the lighter-cost option, while mobile duplication includes the time and travel of a van coming to you. Finally, after-hours or urgent calls are priced differently from daytime counter work, and we will explain that when you call.

If a copy cannot be made accurately from a worn original, we say so rather than sell you a key that will not work well. Sometimes a different fix is the better value, and I will tell you when that is the case.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for key copies?

There are plenty of places to get a key cut. Here is what is different about us, stated plainly and without hype.

  • We have been in business since 1987, so we have seen almost every kind of residential and commercial key in Los Angeles.
  • We run both a real storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, which means you can come to us or we can come to you.
  • We are one company. When you call (213) 577-1366, you are not routed through a dispatch middleman who sends a stranger; the work stays with our team.
  • I oversee the work as owner and lead technician, so there is someone accountable for how your keys come out.
  • The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which matters when the job is a lockout and not just a spare.
  • California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. You should ask any locksmith, including us, for their license details before work begins.

Key duplication in Lake Balboa: postwar homes, apartments, and airport-side offices

Lake Balboa sits in ZIP code 91406, on the Valley floor beside the Sepulveda Basin, and its housing tells you a lot about the keys we see. This neighborhood was carved out of Van Nuys as its own named area in the early 2000s, but the houses are classic postwar Valley stock: single-story stucco homes from the 1940s and 1950s on modest lots. Original postwar door hardware is still common in homes that have not been updated, and that matters for copying. Older locks have older, more worn keys, and the key most families call the spare may be a copy of a copy that has been in a kitchen drawer for decades.

Around the Balboa Boulevard corridor, the typical call is someone who has one worn key to an original lock and wants a better set. If your key is clearly worn, the best approach is often to bring us the best one you have, let us cut fresh copies, and test them in your door. If you have inherited a house with unknown keys, a copy is not the answer. Rekeying is, and our lock rekey service exists for exactly that situation.

Apartment buildings run along the Sherman Way and Victory Boulevard corridors, and the work there looks different. Tenants ask for an apartment key copy for a roommate or partner, and building managers need extra sets for maintenance or turnover. Older multifamily buildings in the area often still have security screen doors and mailbox locks, so a single visit can involve a unit key, a screen door key, and a mailbox key. If you manage rental units here, our locksmith for landlords page explains how we handle multiple units.

On the west side of Van Nuys Airport, small aviation businesses and offices need office key duplication, and the Vanowen Street corridor is another place where small commercial spaces tend to need extra sets. The climate on the Valley floor is hot and dry in summer, with somewhat damper air near the basin's irrigated parkland and lake. That seasonal swing causes modest sticking and alignment issues in older wood doors, and a door that binds can make a perfectly good key feel like it is failing. Before blaming the copy, we check whether the door or latch is the real culprit.

We are based about 13 miles from Lake Balboa, and our vans cover the neighborhood, including the area around Birmingham Community Charter High School and the edge of the Sepulveda Basin near Anthony C. Beilenson Park. If you would rather have the key cut at your home or workplace, we can do that.

How do office and commercial key duplication differ from home copies?

Commercial key duplication is mostly about control. A house key opens a house; an office key may open a suite, a supply room, a back door, and a filing cabinet, and the question of who is allowed to hold copies matters. For small businesses, we recommend keeping a simple written list of who holds which key.

Many commercial doors use keyed-alike or master-keyed systems, and copies for those systems often need the right blank and sometimes the right authorization. If you are managing more than a couple of doors, a master key system can reduce the number of keys everyone carries, and our commercial locksmith team can talk through what suits your building.

If an employee leaves with a key, the answer is usually not another copy. It is a rekey or a change in the key system. We will tell you honestly when duplication is the wrong tool.

When is a copy not the right fix?

Sometimes the best answer is not to copy the key. If you have lost every key to a lock, there is nothing to copy from, and the lock may need to be opened, rekeyed, or replaced. If a key has broken inside the lock, that is a separate extraction job. If your front door has been shared among a lot of people over the years, duplicating again only adds to the number of keys in circulation.

In those cases, we will say so, and we will explain the better route. We would rather lose a small job than leave you with a key that does not do what you needed it to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a spare house key cut at your Westwood storefront?

Yes. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90024. Bring the best working key you have, and we will check the blank, cut the copy, and test it where we can. If you would rather not travel, call (213) 577-1366 and ask about mobile service to Lake Balboa.

Do you offer mobile key duplication in Lake Balboa?

Yes. Our vans carry key-cutting equipment for most common residential and commercial keys. Specialty and restricted keys may need to be handled at the storefront, and we will tell you on the phone if that is likely for your key.

My key says Do Not Duplicate. Can you still copy it?

That stamp is a request, not a lock, but we take it seriously. If the key is yours and not issued by an employer or landlord, we may be able to copy it. If it belongs to someone else, we will usually ask for their permission first.

Can you copy a high security or restricted key?

Sometimes. High security keys need specialty blanks and often specialty machines, and restricted keyways are controlled by the manufacturer, so copies usually require proof of authorization. We will identify the system first and tell you plainly what it takes.

Can you duplicate a deadbolt key?

Yes. Deadbolt keys are often on a different keyway than the knob, so bring the key for each lock you want copied. We match the blank to the deadbolt cylinder specifically.

Can you copy a mailbox key?

Many private and apartment-building mailbox keys can be cut easily. Postal-controlled locks are handled by the postal service. If the lock itself is the problem, see our mailbox lock replacement service.

My copy sticks in the lock. What went wrong?

Usually the copy was cut from a worn original, or from a copy of a copy, so small errors have piled up. A wrong blank or unfinished edges can also cause it. Bring both keys and the lock, and we will see whether the key or the lock is at fault.

Do you copy keys for apartment lockouts?

Key copying needs a working key to copy from. If you are already locked out, that is a different service. Our apartment lockout page explains how we get you back in, and we can cut spares afterward.
