What does a vacation rental actually need from a locksmith?
A vacation rental is a house that strangers use hard, in short bursts, and then leave. That changes what the locks have to do. A homeowner can live with one worn deadbolt and one key on a hook for years. A host can't, because every check-in is a handoff of access and every check-out raises a question: did every key and code come back, and do they still mean anything?
The lock problems hosts call about fall into a handful of patterns. A guest can't get in. A key never came back. A keypad stopped responding at the wrong moment. A code has been shared further than you intended. Or a door is simply worn from heavy use. None of this is exotic, and all of it is easier and lighter in cost to handle when the setup was planned ahead than when you discover the problem at the front door late at night.
This page is written for hosts and owners in La Cañada Flintridge who want that planning done, and for the times when something has already gone wrong. We have been doing lock work since 1987, and the rental side of it comes down to the same fundamentals: know who has access, change access when it matters, and keep a way in that doesn't depend on a single battery or a single phone.
Smart locks, keypads or lockboxes: which setup suits a rental?
There's no single right lock for every rental. What fits depends on the door, how your guests arrive and how much you want to manage from a distance. These are the main options:
- Keypad deadbolts with no connectivity: guests type a code on the door. There's no app and no Wi-Fi, so fewer things can fail. You change codes by hand at the lock, which is fine for a property you visit often and tiresome for one you don't.
- Wi-Fi or hub-connected smart locks: you create and delete codes remotely, often matched to your booking calendar. These are the most convenient for remote check-in, and they depend on your network, your batteries and a working app.
- Retrofit smart deadbolts: some replace only the interior side and keep your existing exterior keyed cylinder. That can matter on a door you don't want drilled or restyled.
- Key lockboxes: simple to set up, but the box code is shared and the key inside can be copied. We usually treat a lockbox as a backup, not the main plan.
- Traditional keyed locks, rekeyed between stays: old-fashioned, and still reasonable for owners who hand over keys in person.

Call (213) 577-1366Keep a physical backup, and check what is behind the lock
Whatever you choose, keep a keyed backup. Batteries die, Wi-Fi drops, and a lock that depends entirely on an app turns a dead phone into a lockout. When we fit a smart lock, we make sure the keyed override works properly and that you know where the backup key lives. Our page on smart lock installation in La Cañada Flintridge explains what the work involves.
A smart lock is also only as strong as the deadbolt, strike plate and frame behind it. If the frame is soft or the strike is held by short screws, the electronics don't make the door any harder to force. We check that when we install, and we tell you plainly if the door needs attention before the lock goes on.
How do you rotate codes and rekey between guests?
Code rotation and rekeying solve different problems, and hosts often mix them up. Rotating a code changes who can enter through the keypad. Rekeying changes which physical keys work in the cylinder. If a guest was handed a key, changing the keypad code does nothing about it. Here is a routine that covers both:
- List every way into the property: front door, side and patio doors, garage entry, any gate, and any outbuilding. Note which have keypads, which have keys, and where spare keys sit (lockbox, cleaner, co-host, neighbor).
- Give each guest their own code, set to start at check-in and end at check-out, instead of reusing one code all season.
- Give cleaners and maintenance people separate codes from guests, so you can tell who entered and delete a single person's access without touching anyone else's.
- After any stay where a key wasn't returned, or a code was clearly passed to people not on the booking, treat that door as compromised.
- For a keyed door, have the cylinder rekeyed so the old keys stop working and new ones are cut. Our lock rekeying service in La Cañada Flintridge keeps your existing hardware and changes what is inside it.
- Test every door, gate and garage entry before the next guest arrives, not only the front door.
When rekeying makes sense and when replacement does
Rekeying keeps the same lock body and changes the internal pin arrangement, so it is usually the more economical route when the hardware is in good shape. If the lock is worn, sticky, loose on the door or already half-failing, we'd rather replace it than rekey a tired part, and we will tell you which one we think it is.
You don't need to rekey after every guest. If every stay uses a unique, expiring code and no physical key left your hands, rotation alone is normally enough. Rekey when a key is lost somewhere you can't recover it, when a guest may have had a copy made, or when you are taking over a property and don't know who holds keys.

Call (213) 577-1366What happens when a guest is locked out or loses a key?
Guests lock themselves out, forget codes, lose keys and, now and then, snap a key off in the lock. Calls at odd hours are normal in this business, which is why our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (213) 577-1366.
Before we open a door, we need to be sure the person asking is allowed to be let in. For a rental, the cleanest way is for the owner or host to call or approve the work, and we may ask for something showing the property is yours or that you manage it. We'd rather ask a question than open a door for the wrong person. When the lock allows, we work without damaging it. The process is covered on our house lockout page for La Cañada Flintridge.
Afterward, the real question is whether the missing key is a risk. A guest who left a key inside the house is not a security problem. A key lost somewhere you can't get it back is a reason to rekey before the next arrival. We will tell you honestly which of those we think you're dealing with, because you shouldn't pay for a rekey you don't need.
How much does vacation rental lock work cost in La Cañada Flintridge?
We don't print numbers on a web page because two requests that sound identical can be very different jobs. What moves the cost is predictable, though:
- The hardware: a basic keypad deadbolt and a connected lock with a hub are very different products, and brands vary widely.
- The number of doors: front, back, side, garage entry, a casita, a gate. Doing several doors in one visit is usually more economical per door than separate trips.
- The condition of the door and frame: a warped door, a worn strike or a loose frame adds work before any lock can be set up properly.
- Timing: a planned daytime appointment generally costs less than an urgent after-hours call.
- Travel: La Cañada Flintridge is about 22 miles from our Westwood storefront, and our mobile vans come to you. That is part of how we quote.
- Security grade: a higher-security cylinder costs more than a standard one, because the part and the installation are different.
The more economical way to handle it
For most hosts, the lighter-cost approach is a planned visit. We look at every door, set up the lock, rekey whatever needs it, and leave you with a system you understand. Emergency calls will always cost more than scheduled work, so a host who sets things up before the busy season generally spends less over the year than one who handles each problem as it comes. Whatever the job, we explain what it involves and what the cost depends on before work begins.

Call (213) 577-1366What should La Cañada Flintridge hosts know about their properties?
La Cañada Flintridge is almost entirely single-family housing, and multifamily is minimal. For a host, that means no shared hallway, no building manager and no common entry door. Each house is its own access problem, and the front door is often only one of several entries: side doors, patio doors, a detached garage and, quite often, a gate. The housing ranges from large-lot mid-century ranch homes to custom hillside houses and older Flintridge estates, and each behaves differently.
Gates are the biggest local difference. Long gated driveways and estate perimeter gates are common here, so a guest's arrival may begin at a gate rather than a door. A gate keypad that stopped responding, a latch that sticks, or a gate lock that has run on the same code for years is a bigger problem than a worn deadbolt, because the guest can't even reach the house. Driveway-gate and estate gate lock service in Flintridge is a typical need in this area, and our page on gate lock repair in La Cañada Flintridge covers it.
Many properties back onto open foothill terrain, and larger hillside houses often justify a stronger perimeter. A high-security cylinder and a properly installed deadbolt on the doors that face the open side are the kind of upgrade we install on larger hillside properties. If your rental fits that description, look at our page on high-security locks, which explains what the extra protection actually does, including key control, so a guest can't simply copy a key at a hardware counter.
Climate matters for smart locks and for the doors themselves. The foothills run hotter and windier than the basin during Santa Ana events, and strong sun on south-facing slopes dries out wood doors and trim. A door that has shrunk or warped binds on its latch, and a smart lock motor has to work harder to throw a bolt against that bind, which wears batteries faster and can cause missed locking. Winter storms can hit the canyon edges hard, so check exterior keypads and batteries after bad weather.
Whether your rental sits in Flintridge, Alta Canyada, the Sagebrush area on the west side, the Paradise Canyon area, near the Foothill Boulevard town center, near Descanso Gardens or along the Angeles Crest Highway corridor, the ZIP code is 91011 and the same planning applies. Properties near La Crescenta are no different. Rekeying a mid-century ranch home in Alta Canyada, or a lockout near the Foothill Boulevard town center, is the sort of everyday job this area produces.
Guests might be in town for JPL, Descanso Gardens, the Lanterman House, Memorial Park or Flintridge Preparatory School, or heading up toward the Angeles Crest Highway gateway. Their reason for visiting doesn't change your lock plan. What it does change is timing: people arriving late after a long drive are exactly the guests for whom a code that doesn't work becomes your problem at once.

Call (213) 577-1366Running several properties, co-hosts or cleaners
If you manage more than one rental, or share access with co-hosts, cleaners and a property manager, the number of people holding access grows faster than the number of doors. A few habits keep that under control:
- Give every person their own code, never a shared one, so removing one person never means changing everyone's access.
- Keep a short written list of who holds which key. When someone stops working for you, delete the code and, if they ever held a physical key, rekey.
- On a single property with several keyed doors, have them keyed alike so a guest isn't juggling multiple keys, and so a rekey handles every door together.
- Replace worn locks on your schedule, not during a booking. A lock that is starting to stick will fail at the worst time.
Owners with long-term tenants as well
Some owners run a short-term rental alongside a longer-term tenancy, or switch between the two. Turnover work like that is a different rhythm, and our page on locksmith services for landlords covers what we do between tenants.
Why hosts call Wilshire Lock & Key
Hosts need two things from a locksmith: someone who can plan, and someone who answers when it goes wrong. Here is what we can honestly offer:
- We've been in business since 1987, so we have seen most lock failures and most ways people misuse them.
- We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans. You are dealing with one company, not a dispatch service passing your call to whoever is free.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, so the person who knows the standard is the person responsible for it.
- Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Ask any locksmith for their license
California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) locksmith company license, known as an LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that number before they touch your property, including us. That matters more for a rental than for a typical home, because the person doing the work will know how your doors are keyed and who has access.
We serve La Cañada Flintridge with mobile locksmith service, so most work happens at the property itself. We don't promise an arrival time on a web page, and when you call, we give you an honest estimate of timing based on where the van is.

Call (213) 577-1366How to get started
You don't need a complete plan before calling. Tell us what's happening and we will work out the rest. Hosts usually start in one of these ways:
- Call (213) 577-1366 or use our contact page and tell us the property address area, the number of doors and gates, and what you currently use: keys, keypads, a lockbox or a smart lock.
- Tell us what prompted the call: a lost key, a code you no longer trust, a lock that sticks, or a plan to move to remote check-in.
- We work out whether the job is a rekey, a replacement, a smart lock installation, a gate repair or a mix, and explain what each would involve and what the cost depends on.
- We do the work at the property, test every door and gate with you or your co-host, and show you how to manage codes and spare keys going forward.
Frequently asked questions
Can you set up smart locks so guests get codes automatically?
Many connected smart locks can create and expire codes remotely, and some work with booking calendars or host apps. What is possible depends on the lock model and the platform you use, so we confirm compatibility before installing anything. We set up the lock, add a keyed backup and walk you through managing codes.
What if a guest is locked out in the middle of the night?
Call (213) 577-1366. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We need the owner or host to confirm the person is allowed in, and we may ask for something showing you own or manage the property. Then we open the door without damage whenever the lock allows.
Do I have to rekey the locks after every guest?
No. If each guest uses a unique code that expires at check-out and no physical key left your hands, rotating the code is normally enough. Rekey after a lost key you can't recover, a suspected copied key, a code that spread beyond the booking, or when you take over a property.
Can guests copy my keys?
Standard keys can be copied at many hardware counters, and a guest could do that without you knowing. Keypad access, per-guest codes, or a restricted key system reduce that risk. If you keep keyed doors, rekeying after any key goes missing is the reliable fix.
Do smart locks hold up in La Cañada Flintridge weather?
Generally yes, with some care. The foothills run hotter and windier than the basin during Santa Ana events, and strong sun can dry out wood doors so they bind. That makes the lock work harder and drains batteries sooner. Check batteries regularly and after winter storms, and keep the door aligned.
Can you service driveway gates and detached garages?
Gate locks and gate hardware are part of our work, and long gated driveways and estate gates are common in La Cañada Flintridge. Detached garages often have their own locks and keying. Tell us what type of gate or entry you have when you call so we can plan the visit.
Is your company licensed by the state?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before work starts. That includes us. Ask when you call, and compare what any company tells you with the state's records.
Will you come out to La Cañada Flintridge?
Yes. We serve La Cañada Flintridge with mobile vans from our Westwood storefront, about 22 miles away. We don't promise arrival times in advance, but when you call, we tell you honestly how long we expect it to take based on where the van is.
