Why does a rental need a different lock plan than a home?
A home has a handful of people holding keys, and that list barely changes for years. A short-term rental is the opposite. Every few days a stranger gets access, and you are responsible for making sure that access ends when the stay does. That one difference drives almost everything we do for hosts: how doors are keyed, which locks make sense, and how easily you can reset things when something goes wrong.
In Gardena, many hosts run a single unit in a small multi-unit building, a condo, or a back unit on an older tract lot. Others rent out a whole house. The lock plan differs for each, but the goal is the same: the right people get in, the wrong people do not, and you are never standing at a door at midnight with no way to open it.
This page is about recurring needs, not a one-off emergency. If you are locked out right now, call (213) 577-1366. We answer 24 hours a day. If you are planning or repairing a setup, read on.
What lock problems do Airbnb hosts run into most?
Most rental lock trouble falls into a few repeat patterns. None of them is exotic, but they tend to surface on check-in day, when you have the least room to deal with them.
- A guest leaves with a key, or a key copy was made and you no longer know who holds it.
- A keypad code is still in circulation after checkout, or was passed to people who were not on the booking.
- A smart lock's batteries die or the app loses its connection while a guest stands outside with a code that will not work.
- A lockbox jams, or its code has sat in a message thread for months.
- A worn deadbolt sticks or turns hard, so guests struggle with it and mention it in reviews.
- A guest locks themselves out or snaps a key off in the cylinder.
Smart lock, keypad deadbolt or lockbox: which fits your rental?
There is no single right answer, and we would rather fit the lock to your door and your habits than push one product. Here is how the three common options compare.
A keypad deadbolt without an app takes codes entered on the lock itself. It is simple and does not depend on Wi-Fi, but you usually program changes at the door. A connected smart lock lets you create, schedule and delete codes remotely, which is the real convenience for remote check-in, though it depends on your internet connection and on keeping batteries fresh. A lockbox is usually the more economical route to start, but it is the weakest on control: the code is typically the same for everyone, and you cannot tell who used it.
We favor models that keep a keyed override, so a dead battery or a dropped connection is an inconvenience, not a lockout. Whether a given lock fits depends on the door: its thickness, the existing hole sizes, and what hardware is already there. See our smart lock installation page for how we approach it. If your door has no deadbolt, or the one on it is worn, we fit a solid one first through deadbolt installation, because a smart lock is only as strong as the door and bolt behind it.

Call (213) 577-1366How do you handle code rotation and rekeying between guests?
Think in two layers: electronic codes and physical keys. For codes, the habit that matters is one code per booking, active only for the stay and removed at checkout. Once the lock is set up properly, that is a routine task you can do from your phone. Scheduling features vary by lock model, and we will tell you plainly what the model you choose can and cannot do.
For physical keys, rekeying is the tool. It changes the internal pins of the lock you already have so old keys stop working, and new keys are cut. When the lock itself is in good condition, lock rekeying is usually more economical than replacing hardware. A workable routine looks like this:
- List everyone who needs access: you, a cleaner, a co-host, maintenance.
- Give each person their own code instead of one shared code, so you can see who used it and remove just one.
- Set guest codes to the booking dates, with a sensible buffer around check-in and checkout times.
- Let guest codes expire or delete them at checkout, while the cleaner and co-host codes stay.
- Rekey whenever a physical key is unaccounted for, or when someone who held a key leaves your team.
- Test the code and the key after every change, before the next guest arrives.
What happens when you call us about a rental?
Rental calls are a little different from a homeowner locked out of their own house, so we ask a few more questions up front. Here is the usual sequence.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Tell us the address, the type of lock, whether a guest is waiting, and whether you are on site.
- We confirm you have the right to open the unit. If you are not at the door, expect us to ask for something that ties you to the property, such as the booking details, a lease, or a utility bill. This protects you and your guest.
- We send a mobile van and tell you straight when we can be there once we know where our vans are. Our mobile locksmith service comes to the property.
- On site, we diagnose first: dead battery, jammed bolt, wrong code, lost key, or a damaged cylinder. We use non-destructive entry methods wherever the lock allows.
- We fix what is actually wrong, whether that is rekeying, repair, replacement or reprogramming.
- We test everything with you, leave working keys and codes, and explain how to reset things yourself next time.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of rental lock work?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the job. These are the factors that move the cost:
- The kind of work: rekeying a sound lock is usually the lighter-cost option compared with replacing it.
- Which lock you choose, since smart locks vary a great deal in features and build.
- The number of doors: front, back, side gate, security door, and any interior locks.
- Whether the door needs preparation, such as new holes, a repair, or a strike adjustment.
- The time of day. After-hours and holiday calls involve different logistics than a weekday appointment.
- Your distance from our base. Gardena is about 17 miles from our Westwood storefront.
- Whether we are setting up several units in one visit.
Why do hosts call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans on the road. When you call, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who sells your job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
Hosts keep odd hours, so the phone line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Our 24-hour locksmith service is set up for exactly those late arrivals and early checkouts. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, which helps if your rentals are not all in one place. If you manage several properties or units, our locksmith for landlords page explains how we approach multi-door work.
What should Gardena hosts know about local rental buildings?
Gardena grew out of the farming districts of Moneta and Strawberry Park and is now largely built out with 1940s and 1950s single-family tracts, garden apartments and condo complexes. It also has a high share of small multi-unit rental properties, so many hosts operate from a unit or back house, not a standalone home. We work across all three ZIP codes, 90247, 90248 and 90249, and from Hollypark to the Gardena Boulevard old downtown.
Security doors and window bars are common on older housing here. For a guest arriving at night, that can mean two locks to deal with: a keyed security door and the main door. Either one can leave a guest stranded. We can rekey the security door to match the main door, or help you set up clear instructions. With window bars in place, climbing through a window is not a backup way in, so a reliable lockout plan matters more.
Along Western Avenue, apartment complex lockouts and mailbox lock changes are routine work for us. If a mailbox key is among the keys that moved around, see our mailbox lock replacement service. The Rosecrans and Artesia corridors mix light-industrial buildings with homes, and conditions differ block to block, so we look at your actual door rather than assume.
Gardena sits on the inland coastal plain. Marine layer overcast is common, but salt exposure is minimal, so corrosion is rarely the issue. What we see more is door swelling on damp mornings, which can make a sound lock feel stiff, and ordinary wear from heavy turnover. Before changing any hardware, check what your lease, HOA, or the city allows for short-term rentals. We cannot advise on those rules.

Call (213) 577-1366What should you ask any locksmith before they work on your rental?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Locksmith Company (LCO) license. Ask any locksmith for that license number and check it with BSIS before they touch your door.
Also ask who will arrive, what the work involves in plain terms, and what drives the cost, before work starts. A reputable locksmith will also ask you to prove you have the right to open the unit, as we do.
Frequently asked questions
Do smart locks work well for Airbnb and vacation rentals?
Yes, for most hosts. They let you set a different code for each booking, schedule it to the stay dates, and remove it at checkout without visiting the property. The trade-offs are batteries and connectivity, so we recommend models with a keyed override. We confirm that a lock fits your specific door before installing it.
How often should I change the code on my rental's lock?
Ideally every booking. Use a unique code per guest that expires after checkout, and give cleaners and co-hosts their own codes. If a code was shared beyond the booking, or someone who knew it should no longer have access, change it right away rather than waiting for the next guest.
Should I rekey or replace the lock if a guest kept the key?
If the lock is in good condition, rekeying is usually the more economical route. It makes the missing key useless and gives you new keys. We recommend replacement when the lock is worn, damaged, or no longer suits how you run the rental, such as moving to a smart lock.
What if my guest is locked out late at night?
Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day. Tell us the address and lock type. We will ask you to confirm you manage the property, since we will not open a unit for someone who cannot show they have the right to. If you are away, we can work with you by phone and with booking details.
What happens when my smart lock's batteries die or the app stops working?
If your lock has a keyed override or an emergency power terminal, you can usually get in without damage. If not, we can open it with non-destructive methods in most cases, then replace the batteries and check that the lock is working. Setting a low-battery routine afterward prevents most repeat calls.
Can you make extra keys for my cleaner and co-host?
Usually yes, for standard keys. Some high-security keys are restricted and need authorization from the owner. Where possible, we suggest individual codes for helpers instead of more physical keys, since you cannot track who is holding a copied key.
Can you work on several units or properties in one visit?
Yes. If you run more than one door or unit, tell us when you call so we can plan the visit, bring the right hardware, and set up access consistently. Matching keying or code setups across doors makes your routine simpler. We cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Do I need my landlord's or HOA's permission to change rental locks?
Possibly. If you rent the unit yourself, or it sits in a condo with an HOA, your lease or association rules may restrict hardware changes or short-term rentals. Check first. We can install the hardware, but we cannot interpret your lease or local rules for you.
