What actually makes a lock high security?

A high security lock is built to resist the ways doors really get opened without the right key: picking, bumping, drilling, forced turning, and unauthorized key copying. Most of the difference is inside the cylinder, the part your key slides into, not in the finish on the outside. A standard builder-grade cylinder uses simple pin stacks with loose tolerances. A high security cylinder tightens those tolerances and adds extra defenses.

The usual ingredients look like this:

  • Security pins with shapes that catch and false-set when someone tries to pick them
  • A second locking element, such as a sidebar or rotating discs, so lifting pins alone does not open the lock
  • Hardened inserts that make drilling harder
  • Tighter keyway profiles that are harder to reach into with picks or bump keys
  • A restricted keyway, meaning blank keys are not sold openly and copies need authorization

Is the cylinder the whole story?

No, and I will say that plainly because it saves people money. A very good cylinder in a door with a weak strike plate, short screws, or a cracked frame is still a weak door. When we look at a job we look at the whole opening: the cylinder, the deadbolt body, the strike, the screws, the door edge and the frame. Sometimes the most useful upgrade is a reinforced strike and long screws alongside a better cylinder, not a fancier cylinder on its own.

The phrase high security is also used loosely in the trade. There are published standards, such as UL 437 for resistance to picking, drilling and other attacks on key locks, and ANSI/BHMA A156.30 for high security cylinders. When you are comparing products, ask which standard a lock was tested to. We will tell you honestly whether a product meets a recognized standard or just carries the label.

Why do East Los Angeles homes and storefronts ask about high security locks?

East Los Angeles is mostly early-20th-century bungalows, Spanish-style houses and duplexes on small lots, with denser apartment buildings along the main corridors. A lot of those properties have rear units or converted garages, and multigenerational households are common. That means a lot of people carrying keys to the same property, and often a lot of old copies floating around: relatives, former tenants, a contractor from years back.

Security screen doors and gated front yards are common across the area, and they are a real first layer. But the lock behind the screen is frequently the original or a builder-grade deadbolt that has been rekeyed a few times and never upgraded. A high security cylinder is a sensible way to make the door itself the strong point, especially where a key might have been copied freely at some point.

On the commercial side, storefronts along Whittier Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard deal with a different problem: doors that get used all day, keys held by several employees, and cylinders that wear out. A pick-resistant cylinder with a restricted keyway gives an owner control over who can make a copy.

How does a high security lock installation work, step by step?

Here is how a typical high security lock installation or replacement goes when you call us. Every door is a little different, so treat this as the usual path rather than a script.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what kind of door it is, what lock is on it now, and what is worrying you: lost keys, a past break-in attempt, a tenant change, or just wanting a stronger setup.
  2. We look at the whole opening: door material, thickness, the frame, the strike, and the existing cylinder or deadbolt. On an older wood door we check for swelling, warping and loose hardware before we choose anything.
  3. We talk through the options and pick a system with you: which cylinder type, whether the keyway should be restricted, and whether the rest of the hardware needs to change too.
  4. We install the new cylinder or lockset, fit it to the door so the bolt throws smoothly, and reinforce the strike and screws where the frame needs it.
  5. We test the lock repeatedly with the door open and closed, hand over the keys, and explain how restricted key copies work so you know how to get more later.
  6. We take away the old hardware, or hand it to you if you want to keep it.

Pick-resistant, bump-resistant and restricted keys: what each one does

These three terms are used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and it helps to know which problem each one solves.

Pick-resistant locks make it harder to manipulate the pins with tools. Security pins and tighter tolerances are the main tools here. Bump-resistant locks defend against bump keys, which are specially cut keys tapped to jump the pins. Anti-bump designs usually add a sidebar or other element that a bump key cannot move. Restricted keys solve a different problem: key control. The key blanks are limited, so a copy generally needs proof of authorization instead of a quick trip to any key kiosk.

Be realistic about the limits. No lock is unpickable, and no cylinder helps if someone breaks a window or kicks through a weak frame. High security locks raise the effort, skill and noise needed to defeat a door, which is often what separates a failed attempt from a successful one. Good key control also matters as much as the lock, which is why a restricted keyway is a big part of the value.

What affects the cost of high security lock replacement in East Los Angeles?

I do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your door. What I can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down, so you are not surprised on the phone.

  • The cylinder system you choose: a pick-resistant cylinder with a common keyway is a lighter-cost route than a fully restricted, patent-controlled key system
  • How many doors you are doing and whether they can all be keyed alike
  • The condition of the door and frame, since a warped door or damaged strike area may need extra work to fit properly
  • Whether you want the cylinder only, or a full deadbolt or lockset replaced as well
  • How many keys you need, and whether you want extra authorized copies
  • The time of day, since night and holiday calls are handled differently from scheduled work
  • Whether a smart or electronic component is involved

Home security locks, commercial security locks and rentals

For a house or duplex, the usual plan is a high security deadbolt on the front door, matching cylinders on the rear unit or back door, and a good strike. If you are mainly adding a single stronger deadbolt, our deadbolt installation page covers that work. If you are swapping out a whole set of locks, see lock replacement as well.

For businesses, commercial security locks bring in more questions: who holds keys, whether employees come and go, and whether you need a master key arrangement. A restricted keyway pairs well with a master key system, and our commercial locksmith work covers the wider picture, including doors and hardware that take daily wear.

Landlords have their own situation. When a unit turns over, the old keys are the problem, and a restricted system lets you limit who can copy a key afterward. If you manage several units, take a look at our locksmith for landlords page, which is where the turnover side of that is handled.

What does this look like around East Los Angeles?

East Los Angeles is unincorporated Los Angeles County, and our storefront in Westwood is about 18 miles away, so we come out with mobile service vans stocked for cylinder and deadbolt work. The ZIP codes we see most here are 90022, 90023 and 90063, and the work varies a lot by neighborhood.

In City Terrace, the hillside homes often have a main house and one or more rear units, and multigenerational households mean many keys. A common job is rekeying the family home and the rear unit, and in those cases a restricted-key cylinder on the main door is a good way to keep control of who can make copies. City Terrace also gets more sun and wind exposure than the flats, so we pay attention to the finish on exterior hardware and how the door sits in its frame.

In Belvedere and Maravilla, duplexes and apartment buildings are common. After a rental turnover, a pick-resistant cylinder on the unit door and a restricted key for the building entrance can be a more durable answer than rekeying with a standard cylinder every time. If you only need keys changed, though, lock rekey is the lighter-cost option, and we will tell you that.

Along Whittier Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard, we work with storefronts and corridor apartment buildings. Security screen doors are everywhere, and the lock on the screen door is only as good as the main door behind it. Older wood doors can swell in summer heat and stick during damp winter spells, which can make a new high security bolt bind. We fit the bolt to the door as it sits across seasons, and adjust the strike so it does not rub.

If your gate is the real weak point, see gate lock repair for that side of the property.

When a high security lock is the wrong answer

I would rather lose a sale than sell you the wrong thing. If you only lost a key or had a tenant move out, a rekey is often the more economical route. If the lock is simply sticking or worn, a repair may do the job. If you just need a spare, key duplication is the simple path, though restricted keys cannot be copied just anywhere.

A high security lock makes sense when you want real key control, you have been dealing with attempted entry or lock tampering, you manage a property with many keyholders, or you want a longer-lived cylinder on a door that gets heavy use. If you are locked out right now, we can help with that first through our emergency locksmith service, then talk about upgrades once you are back inside.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile vans, so you are dealing with one company and not a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One more thing worth knowing. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work. That includes us. Ask to see it, ask for the number, and check it. A real company will not mind the question.

We answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. You can also reach us through our contact page, or read about the wider area on our East Los Angeles locksmith page.

Frequently asked questions

Do high security locks really stop lock bumping?

Locks with anti-bump features, such as a sidebar or similar secondary element, are designed so that a bump key cannot move them. A standard cylinder has none of that, which is why it is the common target. No lock is perfect, but a bump-resistant cylinder takes away one of the easiest methods.

Can I keep my current keys when I upgrade?

Usually not. Most high security cylinders use their own key profile, so you get new keys. If you have several doors, we can often key them alike so you carry one key. Tell us what you currently use and we will say what is possible.

Can I copy a restricted key at a hardware store?

Generally no, and that is the point. Restricted key blanks are not sold openly, and copies need authorization. If you need extra copies, call us and we will explain the process for your system.

Will a high security lock work on my old wood door?

Often yes, but we check the door first. Older wood doors can swell in summer heat and stick in damp winter spells, and a warped door can make any deadbolt bind. We fit the bolt and strike to the door as it actually sits, and sometimes reinforce the edge or frame.

Does a high security lock help if I already have a security screen door?

They work together. The screen door is a good outer layer, but the main door lock is what holds if someone gets past it. A pick-resistant cylinder with a solid strike makes the inner door the strong point.

Is it worth installing high security locks in a rental unit?

It can be, especially with frequent turnover or many keyholders. A restricted keyway limits who can make copies. If you just need keys changed between tenants, a standard rekey is the lighter-cost option, so we help you decide which fits.

Can you install high security locks on a storefront?

Yes. We work on commercial doors, including cylinders and hardware on storefront doors. We will look at the door and frame, how many people hold keys, and whether you need a master key arrangement before suggesting a system.

Can you do this at night or on a weekend?

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366. If you are in an urgent situation, we will tell you what we can do right away. For planned upgrades, we can schedule around you.

What should I ask any locksmith before they start work?

Ask for their BSIS LCO license, which California requires of locksmith companies, and check it. Also ask who will actually do the work, and which standard the lock was tested to. A straight answer to all three is a good sign.
