What lock replacement actually means
Lock replacement means we take the hardware off your door and fit different hardware in its place. That might be a single deadbolt, a knob or lever set, a front door lock replacement with a matching handle set, or every lock on a house or small business. The old mechanism leaves the door, a new one goes in, and the new keys fit only the new cylinders.
It is not the same as a rekey. In a rekey the lock body stays on the door and we change the pins inside so the old keys stop working. If your lock is in decent shape and your only worry is who might still hold a key, lock rekeying is usually the more economical route. Replacement is the right job when the lock itself is damaged, worn out, loose, or simply not good enough for the door it protects.
People search for this under many names: door lock replacement, house lock replacement, residential lock replacement, replacing a broken lock. It is all the same basic work. What changes from door to door is the hardware, the condition of the door, and what you want the lock to do. We will tell you plainly which job you actually need, even when that is the smaller one.
When should you replace a lock instead of repairing it?
Some lock problems are cheap to fix and some are the lock telling you it is finished. A loose screw, a misaligned strike plate, or a latch that needs adjusting is a repair. Past a certain point, though, repairing a tired lock just buys you a few more weeks of annoyance. These are the signs we look for when deciding to replace:
- The key sticks or needs jiggling every time, and a fresh copy of the key does not help.
- The latch no longer catches, or the bolt only partly extends into the frame.
- The cylinder spins freely, or turns without moving the bolt at all.
- There is visible damage: pry marks, a bent latch, a drilled cylinder, or a cracked housing after a break-in attempt.
- The finish has worn through and the handle will not stay tight no matter how often it is tightened.
- The hardware is an old style that nobody makes parts for.
- You have no idea how many keys to the lock are out there, and a rekey will not solve the underlying wear.
- You want a security lock upgrade and the current lock is not worth building on.

Call (213) 577-1366How we replace a lock, step by step
If a broken lock has left you outside your own door, we deal with getting you in first. That is a separate job, covered on our house lockout page, and the replacement follows once you are inside. Otherwise, this is how a typical replacement goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us what kind of door it is, what the lock is doing, and how many locks are involved. A photo of the current hardware helps if you can send one.
- A technician comes out in a mobile van stocked for this work. On arrival we look at the door itself: its thickness, the bore holes, the backset, the edge, the strike plate, and whether the wood or metal around the lock is sound.
- Before any work starts, we go over the hardware options and the factors that decide the cost, so you can choose with the full picture.
- We remove the old hardware and check the door and frame for damage, loose screws, and a worn or weak strike.
- We install the new lock and set the alignment so the bolt throws fully into the frame without dragging. Where it makes sense, we fit a longer-screw strike so the lock is anchored into the framing and not just the trim.
- We test the lock with the door open and closed, and test every key. We also show you how the lock operates, especially with electronic hardware.
- We hand you the keys and the old hardware, if you want it, and answer any last questions.
Front doors, apartments, and businesses: how the job differs
A house front door is the most common replacement. The questions are usually about the deadbolt, the handle set, and whether the door and frame will hold up to a determined push. We often replace the deadbolt and handle together so the finish matches and the whole assembly is fresh.
Apartment lock replacement has an extra step: permission. If you rent, the lock belongs to the building, so check your lease or ask the landlord or property manager before we change anything. Property owners with several units can ask about our work for landlords, where keying and unit turnover are the main concerns.
Business lock replacement is a different kind of job. Doors see far more traffic, so commercial-grade hardware is built for heavier daily cycling than a typical house set. A business security upgrade often begins with a plain question: who has keys right now, including former employees and past vendors? Replacing the cylinders, or the whole lock, resets that. For the door-side hardware itself, see our page on commercial door hardware.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of lock replacement in Diamond Bar?
We do not post prices, because the same words, a new front door lock, can describe very different jobs. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost, so nothing is a surprise:
- The hardware you choose. Basic residential sets, heavier-duty grades, high-security cylinders, and electronic locks sit in very different ranges.
- How many locks. One deadbolt is a smaller job than a whole house, and doing several at once is more efficient than coming back.
- The condition of the door. Oversized or damaged bore holes, a split edge, or a crushed strike area need prep work before new hardware can sit properly.
- Keying. Having every lock on one key, or matching a set of keys you already use, adds some work.
- Time of day. A planned visit during the day is a different situation from a late-night emergency call.
- Distance. Diamond Bar is about 42 miles from our Westwood storefront, and the van time to get out there is part of the picture.
- Extras such as a reinforced strike or a matching finish for an HOA.
Choosing new hardware: a security lock upgrade that fits the door
A new lock is a chance to improve things, not just copy what was there. We keep recommendations grounded. A strong lock on a weak frame is only as strong as the frame, so we look at the strike, the screws, and the door material before talking about brands.
For most houses, a solid deadbolt with a properly anchored strike is the upgrade that matters most. Our deadbolt installation page goes into the details. If you want keypad or app-based entry, smart lock installation covers what to expect, including battery life and the need to keep a backup key. Smart locks suit some doors better than others, and door prep decides that.
Where the concern is pick resistance, drilling, or key control, high-security locks are the option to look at. They cost more and come with restricted keys that cannot be copied at a hardware store, which is the point, but also something to weigh. If the lock only needs adjusting or a part swapped, we say so and point you to lock repair instead.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a replacement
We have been in business since 1987. That is long enough to have seen most of what goes wrong with locks and most of the ways people get talked into jobs they do not need. A few things about how we work:
- We are one company. The person who answers (213) 577-1366 works for us, and the van that arrives is ours, not a job passed to a stranger through a dispatch service.
- We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans, so there is an actual place behind the phone number.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
- Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If a lock fails at night, our emergency locksmith service is the same company and the same phone number.
- We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Diamond Bar is a regular stop, not a rare trip.

Call (213) 577-1366Lock replacement around Diamond Bar: what the neighborhoods tell us
Diamond Bar was master-planned from the 1960s onward, so much of the housing is hillside tract homes built between the 1960s and 1980s. In houses that age, the front door hardware has often been swapped at least once, and sometimes never. We see doors in the Diamond Point and Summitridge areas where the lock is past its working life, and the homeowner wants a modern deadbolt, or smart lock installation, to go with it. Hillside entries can be a little different from flat-lot doors, so we measure the door before choosing hardware.
Along Golden Springs Drive and Diamond Bar Boulevard, condo and townhome clusters raise another question. A rekey is usually what these homes need, and HOA-managed communities across the city ask for that often. But if the lock is damaged, or the HOA requires a particular finish, replacement is the answer. Check your HOA rules on exterior hardware before we start. We can match to the finish they require.
In The Country Estates, the guard-gated community of large custom homes on estate lots, the gate controls who comes into the neighborhood, not how good the front door lock is. Homeowners there tend to look at high-security replacement, where the lock quality fits the size of the house.
Around the Sunset Crossing Road area and South Pointe, the same tract-home pattern applies, and in ZIP 91765 as a whole the practical effects are heat and dust. Hot summers expand doors, the bolt starts to drag, and dust in exterior keyways makes keys stick. Wind funneling through Brea and Tonner Canyons brings in more of it. We recommend a dry lubricant, not oil, since oil holds dust.
On the business side, shopping centers along Diamond Bar Boulevard and Grand Avenue mean retail doors that see a lot of daily traffic. Replacing a worn lock there is as much about keeping the business running as about security.
What to ask any locksmith before they touch your door
California requires locksmith companies to hold a Locksmith Company license (LCO) issued by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as BSIS. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins, and check it with the state yourself. It takes little effort and filters out a lot of trouble.
A few other questions are worth asking. What exactly will you replace, and what will you leave? What are the factors that decide the final cost, before work starts? Will the technician at the door be the one doing the job? What happens to my old hardware? Be wary of anyone who will not discuss cost until the old lock is already off the door.
If you want to talk through a replacement, call (213) 577-1366 or use our contact page. There is no obligation to book just because you asked a question.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a lock replacement take?
A single lock on a door that is in good shape is a short job. A whole house, or a door that needs prep work before the new hardware will sit right, takes longer. When the technician has looked at your doors, they can tell you what to expect for your situation.
Should I replace my lock or just rekey it?
If the lock works well and you only want to cancel old keys, a rekey is usually the lighter-cost option. If the lock is worn, damaged, loose, or out of date, or you want better hardware, replacement makes more sense. We will tell you which applies when we see the door.
My lock broke and I am locked out. Can you still help?
Yes. We get you back inside first, then replace the lock once you are in and ready to decide. Call (213) 577-1366 any time, day or night.
Do I get new keys with a new lock?
Yes. New locks come with their own keys, and the old keys will not work in them. If you have several locks, we can key them to a single key so you are not carrying a ring of them.
Can I replace the lock on my apartment as a tenant?
Check your lease first, and talk to your landlord or property manager. The lock is usually part of the building, and many leases require permission before hardware is changed. Property managers can call us to arrange the work.
Will a new lock fit the holes in my existing door?
Often, yes, because most residential doors use standard bore sizes. Older or damaged doors sometimes need prep, such as a plate over an oversized hole. A photo or a quick look at the door tells us.
Do you replace locks for businesses in Diamond Bar?
Yes. We do business lock replacement and business security upgrade work, including swapping cylinders after staff changes. Commercial doors often take heavier-duty hardware than a house, and we choose accordingly.
Do I need to be home during the replacement?
Someone should be there, ideally an adult who can confirm the door and approve the work, then receive the keys. We test everything with you before we leave.
Does Diamond Bar's heat and dust wear out locks faster?
Heat can expand doors until the bolt drags, and dust in exterior keyways makes keys stick. Neither usually ruins a good lock, but both speed up wear on a weak one. If your lock has started to bind in summer, it may be a sign it is nearing the end.
