Why won't my gate lock?
A gate that will not lock is usually a gate problem that shows up at the lock. Hinges loosen, posts shift in the ground, and a gate that once closed with a firm click starts to drop a little at a time until the latch no longer meets its catch. By the time you notice the gate won't lock, the lock itself may be healthy and only needs the gate and hardware brought back into line.
Other times the lock really has failed. Outdoor hardware lives a harder life than anything on your front door. These are the causes we look for first on side gates, pedestrian gates, and driveway gates:
- Sag or misalignment: the latch bolt hits the strike too high, too low, or off to one side, so it cannot catch.
- Rust and corrosion: moisture and age seize latches, springs, and cylinders until the bolt sticks or the key will not turn.
- Grit and dust: fine debris works into the keyway and latch and gums up the moving parts.
- A worn spring latch: the gate swings shut but the latch never engages, or it engages and will not release.
- Impact damage: a gate slammed by wind, a vehicle, or an animal can bend a latch bolt or crack a lock body.
- Keypad or electronic faults: dead batteries, water in the keypad, a broken wire, or an electric strike that no longer releases.
- A worn key or cylinder: the key sticks, spins, or works only with jiggling.
- Forced entry: a pried hasp, bent hardware, or a damaged post.
What kinds of gate locks do we repair and replace?
Gate lock repair covers everything from a simple latch on a wooden side gate to an electronic gate lock tied to a keypad. We work on the locking and latching side of the gate:
- Side gate and pedestrian gate locks: keyed latches, deadbolt-style gate locks, drop bolts, and hasps.
- Gate latch repair: spring, gravity, thumb, and lever latches that have gone loose, stiff, or crooked.
- Driveway gate locks: slide bolts, cane bolts, and keyed locks on swinging and sliding vehicle gates.
- Keypad gate locks: mechanical code locks and battery-powered keypad units, repaired, reset, or replaced.
- Electronic and smart gate lock installation: electric strikes, magnetic locks, and smart locks for code-based entry.
- Weather-resistant gate locks: outdoor-rated hardware chosen for steel, wrought iron, aluminum, or wood gates.
Where does gate lock work stop?
One honest boundary: if your driveway gate is motorized and the trouble is the motor, the control board, or the operator arm, that repair belongs to the operator's manufacturer or installer. We handle the lock, latch, keypad, and strike. If the real fault is the operator, we will say so instead of selling you hardware you do not need. If you want broader entry control for a property, see our access control installation service.

Call (213) 577-1366How does a gate lock repair visit work?
Every gate is a little different, so we do not arrive with a fixed plan. This is the usual order of a visit.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us what the gate is made of, what kind of lock it has, and what it is doing: not latching, key will not turn, keypad dead, or something else.
- A mobile van comes to the gate from our Westwood base, carrying common latches, cylinders, strike plates, and fasteners.
- We look at the whole gate, not only the lock: hinges, post, swing, latch height, and how the bolt meets the strike.
- We explain what we found, whether repair or replacement makes more sense, and what drives the cost, before any work starts.
- We do the work: realigning the latch, cleaning and treating the mechanism with a dry lubricant suited to dusty outdoor locks, rekeying or replacing the cylinder, or fitting new hardware.
- We test it the way you will use it: swing the gate repeatedly, lock and unlock with every key, try the keypad, and confirm the gate latches when it should.
- We hand over keys or codes and show you what to watch for, such as sag or a latch that needs a push.
Should you repair the gate lock or replace it?
Repair is the usual starting point and is often the more economical route. A latch that is out of line, a loose strike plate, or a cylinder packed with dust can frequently be fixed without new hardware. Our general lock repair page covers the same thinking for doors; gates add the outdoor factors.
Replacement makes more sense when the lock body is rusted through, the latch bolt is bent past adjusting, the cylinder has failed, the hardware was an indoor product never meant for outdoors, or parts are no longer made. It is also the moment to upgrade: gate lock replacement can swap a basic latch for a keyed outdoor lock, a keypad gate lock, or a more weather-resistant model. For doors elsewhere on the property, see lock replacement.
A third case is gate lock installation on a gate that never had a real lock, such as a side gate held shut with a bent nail or a loop of wire. We can fit a proper lock, but the gate must be sound enough to carry it. A latch bolted into rotted wood will not hold, and we will tell you that up front.
What affects the cost of gate lock repair in Chatsworth?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because two gates that look alike can need very different work. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost, so the quote you hear makes sense.
- Repair or replacement: adjusting and realigning a latch is lighter work than replacing the lock.
- Type of hardware: a basic keyed latch, a mechanical keypad lock, and an electronic gate lock are different products with very different parts.
- Power and wiring: electric strikes and magnetic locks need power, and tracing a broken wire takes time.
- Gate material and condition: steel, wrought iron, aluminum, and wood take different fasteners, and a sagging gate may need adjusting before any lock works.
- Weather rating: outdoor-rated, corrosion-resistant hardware generally costs more up front than a basic latch.
- Number of gates and keys: several gates keyed alike, or extra keys, add parts and labor.
- Travel and timing: we drive from Westwood, and after-hours calls are priced differently from daytime visits.

Call (213) 577-1366Gate locks across Chatsworth: ranch homes, foothill properties, and townhomes
Much of Chatsworth's housing is 1960s and 70s single-story ranch homes, and many of them have a side gate that has taken decades of sun and wind. Whether you are near Old Town Chatsworth, the Stoney Point area, or Chatsworth Park South in ZIP code 91311, a worn latch on one of those gates is a typical reason people call.
The gates that matter most toward the Santa Susana Pass foothills are the working ones. Horse-zoned lots and gated equestrian properties, including the gated equestrian area of Monteria Estates, depend on driveway gates, pedestrian gates, and detached garages or barns with their own locking hardware. Gate and barn lock service on horse-zoned properties near the Santa Susana foothills is exactly this kind of work. A gate there keeps animals in, lets deliveries and visitors through, and opens and closes all day, so latches wear faster and a failure gets noticed quickly.
If you live in a townhome community like Rockpointe, any shared or pedestrian gates may belong to the association. Those usually go through your HOA or property manager, and we can help you sort out whether a problem is yours to fix. For the lock on your own front door, see residential locksmith service. Properties along the De Soto Avenue industrial corridor are a different kind of job, mostly roll-up doors and commercial hardware, covered under commercial locksmith work.
Chatsworth is about 26 miles from our base, and our mobile locksmith vans make the trip to you. A clear description of the gate on the phone helps us bring the right parts.
How do heat, wind, and grit affect gate locks, and what holds up?
Chatsworth is one of the hottest parts of the San Fernando Valley in summer, and in fall Santa Ana winds funnel through the Santa Susana Pass. Near the rocky foothills, wind-blown grit and dust can work into exterior lock cylinders and gate hardware over time. Each does something different:
- Heat: metal gates expand in strong sun, which can change how a latch meets its strike, and heat dries lubricant out of moving parts.
- Wind: a gate swinging freely in a Santa Ana gust slams against its stop, loosening latches and bending bolts. A gate should close firmly but not bang.
- Grit and dust: abrasive dust packs into keyways and latch mechanisms. Oil attracts it, so a dry lubricant is generally the better choice outdoors.
What hardware suits an outdoor gate?
For a weather-resistant gate lock, we look for corrosion-resistant finishes, shielded keyways, and keypad units built to take rain and sun. A keyway cover keeps dust out between uses.
If you are weighing a keypad or smart gate lock installation, ask whether it is rated for outdoor use, how it handles summer heat, and what happens when the battery dies. A keyed override is a sensible backup. Our smart lock installation page covers the electronic side for doors; gates need the weather-rated versions.

Call (213) 577-1366What should you do before we arrive?
A few minutes of looking helps us diagnose faster.
- Do not force it. Hauling on a stuck latch can bend the bolt or crack the post fitting.
- Note what it does: closes but will not catch, catches but will not release, or the key will not turn.
- Look at the strike side for a gap, a rub mark, or a bent catch.
- Check the battery or power if it is a keypad or electric gate lock. A dead battery is a common, simple cause.
- If animals, a pool, or children are involved, secure the gate temporarily with a chain and padlock through the gate and post.
- Gather your keys, codes, and the brand name from the hardware.

A word on licensing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask any locksmith you are considering for the license number before work begins, and check it with BSIS.
We keep this page to gates. Lockouts, broken keys, and car keys each have their own pages.
Frequently asked questions
My gate won't lock. Is it the lock or the gate?
Often it is the gate. Sagging hinges, a shifted post, or a loose strike plate stop the latch from meeting its catch even when the lock is fine. We check alignment first, then the latch and cylinder, so you only replace what has actually failed.
Can you repair a keypad gate lock, or do I need a new one?
Often a keypad lock can be repaired or reset. Dead batteries, worn buttons, and misaligned latches are fixable. If water has damaged the electronics or the unit is not rated for outdoor use, replacement is usually the sounder choice. We tell you which applies.
Can you install an electronic or smart gate lock on my driveway gate?
Yes for the lock side, including electric strikes, magnetic locks, and code-based entry. These need power and a sound gate. If your gate is motorized, the operator itself is a separate system, and we will explain how the lock needs to work with it.
Do you fix side gate locks on older ranch homes?
Yes. Side gates on older single-story homes often have worn spring latches, loose hasps, or a lock that was never meant for outdoors. We can repair the latch, replace it with weather-resistant hardware, or fit a proper keyed gate lock if the gate frame is solid.
Do you handle gate and barn locks on horse properties near the Santa Susana foothills?
Yes. Gate and barn lock service on horse-zoned properties is part of what Chatsworth's foothill area needs. Tell us what the gate is made of and whether the barn has its own lock, and we will plan the visit around the hardware you have.
How much does gate lock replacement cost?
It depends on the hardware type, the gate material, whether power or wiring is involved, the weather rating, and the time of the call. We do not quote numbers online, but we explain what applies to your gate and the cost before starting work.
Do you come out at night or on weekends?
Yes. Our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year. A gate that will not lock is a real security problem overnight, so call whenever it happens.
What if my gate belongs to an HOA or townhome complex?
Shared gates at complexes like Rockpointe are usually the association's responsibility, and changes typically need approval from your HOA or property manager. We can look at your own gate and hardware and help you work out whose job a repair is.
