What is a master key system, and does your Cerritos property need one?
A master key system is a planned structure for who can open what. Every lock still has its own key, often called a change key, but a higher-level key is cut to open a defined group of those locks. Above that you can add a grand master that opens several groups. One person carries one key instead of a ring of fifteen, and the owner keeps control of the whole building.
The idea is simple. The work is in the planning. A system built around the wrong groupings, or one that gives every manager the top-level key out of convenience, is worse than no system. We start from your people and doors, then decide how the keys should be organized.
You probably need a system if any of these sound familiar:
- Staff carry heavy key rings and nobody is sure which key does what.
- You have no reliable record of who holds a key to which door.
- A former employee or tenant never returned a key and you cannot say what it still opens.
- Different departments need different access, but the owner or property manager needs access to everything.
- You are adding a second suite, a warehouse bay, or a new building and want one consistent approach.
What the problem usually looks like before a system goes in
Most businesses do not wake up wanting a master key system. They arrive at one after a few years of patching. A new door gets a new lock with its own key. A tenant leaves and the lock is swapped, but only on the front door. Somebody has copies made at a hardware counter, and now nobody knows how many exist.
The result is key sprawl. Locks from three different manufacturers sit side by side, keys are not labeled, and an unaccounted-for key is a standing risk. Every time someone leaves the company or a unit turns over, the question is whether to rekey everything or just hope. That is the situation a key control system is meant to end.
A properly planned hierarchy fixes the daily friction and the security question together. People carry fewer keys, you know what each key opens, and when one is lost the damage is limited to the group of locks that key was cut for, not the whole property.
How we build a master key system, step by step
We do not sell a system out of a catalog and walk away. Each one is designed on paper before any pin is cut. Here is the process we follow.
- Walk the property and list every door, gate, cabinet and padlock that might belong in the system. We note the existing hardware, brand, and condition of each cylinder.
- Talk through who needs access to what. We ask about shifts, departments, contractors, cleaning crews, and who should never have top-level access.
- Draw the hierarchy: change keys for individual doors, masters for groups, and a grand master if you need one. We also decide how many levels the property realistically needs, because every added level adds complexity.
- Choose the cylinders and keyway. This is where we decide between a standard keyway and a restricted one, and whether duplicate-protected keys make sense for you.
- Pin and install the cylinders, or rekey existing ones where the hardware allows. We test every key against every door it should open, and just as important, every door it should not.
- Hand over the keys with a written key chart, a numbering scheme, and a plain explanation of how to order more keys without weakening the system.

A restricted keyway is a key profile that is not sold openly. The blanks are controlled, so a stranger cannot walk into a store and have a copy cut on a whim. Pair that with duplicate-protected keys, where copies are only made through an authorized process using your authorization, and you get a restricted key system with real paper-trail control.
That is useful for an employee key control system. If a key is stamped and registered, you decide who may request copies. For a business that has had keys quietly duplicated before, this is often the biggest single improvement a system can make.
There are honest limits. Some restricted keyway lines are protected by patents or sold only through authorized dealers, and what is available depends on the product line, so we confirm what exists for your hardware before you commit. A restricted key is also not a magic key. It makes casual copying much harder, but it does not make a poor door or a weak frame secure. If the door can be forced or the strike plate is loose, the keyway is not your problem. For stronger cylinders and hardware, see our high security locks page.
We would rather tell you when a restricted system is more than you need. A small office with a few employees may be well served by a simple two-level system on a standard keyway, and that is usually the more economical route.
Can we convert your existing locks into a master key system?
Often, yes. If your current cylinders are good quality and from a brand that can be repinned for master keying, a master key rekey can bring them into a system without replacing every lock. That keeps hardware you already like and can lower the cost of the project compared with a full changeout.
Not every lock cooperates. Cheap cylinders, worn ones, mixed brands, or locks that cannot accept extra pinning may need to be replaced. In that case we tell you which doors are rekey candidates and which need new hardware, and we do not push replacement where it is not needed. The basics of rekeying are covered on our lock rekey page, and master keying is a more involved version of the same idea.
Once the system is in, additional keys should go through key duplication handled with your system in mind. A copy of a master key cut carelessly can undo the whole structure.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a master key system in Cerritos?
We do not quote a figure for a system sight unseen, because the same words can mean very different projects. A fair estimate depends on a handful of things, and we go over each with you.
- The number of doors and locks in the system, including gates, cabinets and padlocks if they are included.
- How many levels the hierarchy has. A two-level system is simpler than a grand master with several master groups.
- Whether we can rekey existing cylinders or have to replace them with new hardware.
- The keyway you choose. A restricted keyway with duplicate-protected keys costs more than a standard one, because of the controlled blanks and the authorization process.
- How many keys you need cut for each person and group at handover.
- Door and hardware condition. A cylinder that is fine is easier than a sagging door that needs work before a lock will latch properly.
- Scheduling, such as after-hours work so your business keeps operating during the day.
Master key systems in Cerritos: where they fit
Cerritos has a mix of property types that each use key systems differently. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, roughly 29 miles from Cerritos, and our mobile vans handle site walk-throughs and installs at your location in the 90703 ZIP code and nearby.
In the Cerritos Industrial Park, the typical need is a warehouse and office combination. The office staff need access to the front and admin areas, the warehouse crew needs bays and a supply room, and the owner needs everything. That fits a clean three-tier layout, and a restricted keyway helps if seasonal or contract workers come and go. If you want electronic credentials alongside mechanical keys, we cover that on our access control installation page.
Around Los Cerritos Center and Cerritos Towne Center, the tenants are retail and service businesses with a front door, a back door, a stockroom and maybe an office. A small system there lets a manager open the store and the back room without carrying the landlord's mechanical access to other suites. We handle the broader storefront work under our commercial locksmith service.
Townhome and condo developments near the Towne Center and along corridors such as Carmenita Road and South Street often have shared utility rooms, mail areas, garages, and a management office. An apartment master key system lets a manager or maintenance person reach common areas and units as policy allows, while each resident keeps a key that opens only their own door. Landlords with several rentals can find more on our locksmith for landlords page.
Shadow Park is a different case. It is a gated enclave of about 394 homes built in the late 1970s, with staffed gate access. If a board or management group looks after shared hardware such as gate-side doors or common-area locks, a small system can keep those keys organized. Individual homeowners' front doors should not be tied into a master, and anyone tied to a gate mechanism may want our gate lock repair service for the hardware itself.
One local detail affects installs. Cerritos sits inland, with a weaker marine influence than coastal cities, so summer afternoons run warmer and sun-exposed doors can expand slightly. We check door fit and latch alignment during the test stage, since a door that binds in afternoon heat makes any key feel faulty. Salt corrosion is not a meaningful factor here, so finish choice comes down to appearance and the door's use, not coastal weather.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a key system
We have been in business since 1987, and a lot of that time has been spent on exactly this problem: untangling years of mismatched keys and making them manageable. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with a storefront plus mobile service vans, so there is a real shop behind the van that shows up.
You deal with one company. There is no dispatch middleman passing your project to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the planning of each system, because the hierarchy design is where most key systems succeed or fail.
One more thing worth saying plainly: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith, including us, for the license number before work begins. Our number is being added to this site, and we will provide it when you ask.
Planning calls can be scheduled, but locks fail on their own schedule. Our phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year, at (213) 577-1366. If you are in the middle of a lock failure, our 24-hour locksmith service covers it, and we can return to the system design afterward.
What we will tell you honestly before you decide
A master key system does trade some security for convenience. Every master level adds some theoretical vulnerability, because a lock that accepts more than one key has more ways to be opened or attacked. For most businesses and properties the control gained is well worth it, but a high-risk room such as a safe room, server closet or cash office is sometimes better kept outside the master structure entirely.
We will also tell you if a system is not the right answer. If you have a few doors and two employees, careful key records and a rekey may serve you better. If you mainly need to know who comes and goes, electronic access may fit better. The goal is a setup you can actually manage, not the biggest system we can sell.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a master key system and a restricted key system?
A master key system is about hierarchy, meaning one key can open a defined group of locks. A restricted key system is about control over copying, using a keyway whose blanks are not sold openly. They are often combined, so you get both structure and copy control, but you can have either one on its own.
Can you add a master key to locks we already have?
Often, if the existing cylinders are decent quality and can be repinned. We inspect them first. Locks that are worn, cheap, or from mixed brands may need replacement, and we will point out which doors fall into which group before any work is done.
How do duplicate-protected keys work?
The keys are stamped or registered, and copies are only made through an authorized process with your approval. That stops someone from copying a key at a random shop. What is available depends on the keyway line, so we confirm the options for your hardware before you choose.
What happens if an employee loses a master key?
The answer depends on its level. A lost change key affects one door. A lost master affects a whole group, and a lost grand master is the serious case. Depending on the situation, we can rekey the affected group instead of the whole building, which is a major reason to plan levels carefully.
Does an apartment master key system let residents' keys open each other's doors?
No. Each resident's key should open only their own unit. The manager or maintenance master opens the units and common areas the owner wants it to, and that is separated from the resident keys in the design.
How much does a master key system cost in Cerritos?
It depends on door count, number of levels, whether existing cylinders can be reused, the keyway you choose, how many keys you need, and door condition. We will not give a figure without seeing the property, but we will explain which factors move the cost for your site.
Can you work after hours so my Cerritos business is not disrupted?
Yes. We can schedule installs outside of business hours, and our phone is answered 24/7 at (213) 577-1366. Where a job allows, we do the work in phases so doors are never left unsecured.
Should a gated community like Shadow Park use a master key system?
Only for shared hardware. If a board or management group controls common-area locks, a small system can keep those keys organized. Individual homeowners' doors should stay separate from any master. Gate mechanisms are a separate service, and we can look at them with you.
How do I order more keys after the system is installed?
Through us, or through whoever you authorize on your key chart. With a restricted keyway, copies need your authorization. That is the point of the system, and it is why we give you a written key chart at handover.
