The 2018–2021 Tundra uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota Tundra key guide.

TOY44H bladed key on key-start trims (catalog listings run 2018-2021); Limited/Platinum/1794 trucks use the 8A smart system with push-button start. All-keys-lost on smart-key trucks may require Toyota pass-codes or credentialed access depending on the tool.
What kind of key does a 2018 Tundra use?
On the key-start trims, the 2018 Tundra uses a bladed key with a transponder chip in the head. The chip family is H, a 128-bit DST-AES design. The blade is the TOY44H profile. Catalog listings for that key run across the 2018 through 2021 model years, so you will see the same part number shown for several years. That is normal and not a mistake.
The chip is what matters most to you as the owner. The truck will not start unless the immobilizer reads a chip it recognizes, and the chip has to be programmed to your truck. A key that only has the right blade cut into it will turn in the door and may even turn the ignition, but the engine will not run. That is why a plain hardware-store copy does not work on this truck.
The higher trims are different. The Limited, Platinum and 1794 trucks use Toyota's 8A smart system with push-button start. If you have a button on the dash and a fob instead of a blade key, you are in that second group, and the steps and tools are not the same as for the bladed key.
Your truck also has a mechanical backup key. On a smart-key truck that is the emergency blade inside the fob, and it lets you into the door if the fob battery dies. It does not replace programming a working fob.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?
If you still have a working key, copying is the easier job. For this setup the original key is needed for duplication. We cut the new blade, program the new chip to the truck over the OBD port, and check that both keys start the engine and work the locks. Having a spare made while you still hold a good key is usually the more economical route compared with waiting until you are stranded.
If every key is gone, replacement is still possible on this truck. We cut a blade from the lock or by code, then program a new key from scratch through the OBD port. It takes more steps than a copy, and the cost reflects that. We can do it where the truck is parked, since our mobile vans come to you, so there is no need to tow it first.
- Working key available: cut, program the chip, test everything.
- All keys lost on a key-start truck: cut from the lock or by code, then program through OBD.
- All keys lost on a smart-key truck: see the note below on what may be required.

Call (213) 577-1366What are the common problems with 2018 Tundra keys?
Three issues come up on this truck, according to the data we work from. We list them because the fix depends on which one you have.
- Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage trucks. The key may go in rough, stick, or turn only with jiggling. Sometimes the lock needs service as well as a new key.
- A worn key blade that no longer turns the lock. Cutting a fresh blade from the original code or the lock often solves this, rather than copying the worn one.
- Non-transponder copies that will not start the truck. They look right and may turn, but the immobilizer rejects them. The remedy is a proper transponder key, programmed to the truck.
What affects the price of a Tundra key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job decides the cost. These are the factors that move it:
- Key type: a bladed transponder key versus a smart fob for the push-button trims.
- Whether you have a working key or all keys are lost.
- Whether the ignition or door lock is worn and needs work as well.
- Where the truck is and when you need us. A storefront visit and a mobile call are priced differently.
- How many keys you want made in the same visit. Programming extra keys together is usually the lighter-cost option than coming back later.
What we confirm by VIN before we start
Here is the honest part. The data we use confirms the H-family chip and OBD programming for the key-start trucks. For smart-key trucks, the note on file says that all keys lost may require Toyota pass-codes or credentialed access, depending on the tool. We do not want to promise one path before we see the truck. So we confirm trim and key system by VIN and in person, and we tell you plainly if a particular truck turns out to need dealer-level access.
Whoever you call, ask for their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a legitimate company will give it to you without hesitation.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 2018 Toyota Tundra key have a chip?
Yes. The key-start trims use a bladed transponder key with an H-family 128-bit DST-AES chip. Without a programmed chip the truck will not start.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Tundra?
No. A copy without a transponder chip may fit the lock, but the truck will not start. You need a transponder key programmed to the truck.
Can you make a key if I lost every key?
Yes, all keys lost is possible on this truck. On key-start trucks we program through the OBD port. On smart-key trucks, pass-codes or credentialed access may be needed depending on the tool, and we confirm by VIN.
Do I need my original key to make a copy?
For duplication, yes, the original key is needed. If you have no working key, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job instead.
How do I know whether my Tundra is key-start or push-button?
Look at the dash. A keyhole means the bladed transponder key. A start button means the smart system, found on Limited, Platinum and 1794 trucks. If you are unsure, we confirm by VIN.
Can you come to my truck?
Yes. Our mobile vans serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock.
My key is worn and hard to turn. Is it the key or the ignition?
On high-mileage Tundras it can be either. Worn ignition wafers and a worn blade are both known issues. We check both before recommending a fix.
