The 2024–2026 Tacoma uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota Tacoma key guide.

All-new fourth generation: push-button start standard on the 8A-BA smart system. All-keys-lost generally requires Toyota server codes with locksmith-credentialed (LSID/NASTF VSP) TIS access.
What key does the 2024 Tacoma use, and what does that mean for you?
The 2024 Tacoma is the all-new fourth generation, and push-button start is standard. The key is a smart proximity fob. The truck senses the fob nearby, so you do not insert anything to start it. Inside the fob is an 8A-BA chip, a 128-bit DST-AES smart transponder. We have this chip family verified for this year.
In practice, this is not a key you can have cut at a hardware store. A blade alone will not start the truck, because the truck has to recognize an encrypted fob. The fob also has to be programmed to the vehicle's immobilizer before it works.
Your fob also has a mechanical backup key. If the fob battery dies, that key still lets you into the truck. Keep it somewhere you can reach, not in the glovebox of the truck it opens.
- Key type: smart proximity fob with push-button start
- Chip family: 8A-BA, 128-bit DST-AES smart
- Mechanical backup key: yes
- Programming method: through the OBD port
Duplicate key or all keys lost: how do the two cases differ?
If you still have a working fob, making another is the more straightforward job. The original key needs to be present, and we program the new fob to the truck alongside it. Having a spare made before you lose the last one is usually the more economical route.
If every key is gone, we can still make you a new one. All keys lost on the 2024 Tacoma generally requires Toyota server codes, and that means locksmith-credentialed access to Toyota's technical information system (LSID and NASTF VSP). The work is more involved because the truck's security data has to be retrieved for your specific vehicle before any new fob can be added.
The OBD programming also needs NASTF SDRM-related access, so this is not something a shop can do with only a generic key-cloning tool. Ask any locksmith how they plan to program your key before you agree to the job.
How do we handle a 2024 Tacoma key job?
Here is how a typical call goes. The details shift a little depending on whether you have a working key.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us whether you have any fob at all, plus where the truck is parked.
- We confirm the truck by VIN, along with proof that you own it, before we cut or program anything.
- A mobile van comes to the truck, or you can bring it to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd if it is drivable or can be towed.
- We connect to the OBD port, retrieve the security data that your situation requires, and program the new fob to the truck.
- We test that the doors, push-button start, and the mechanical backup key all work before we call the job finished.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of replacing a 2024 Tacoma key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. A smart fob for this truck costs more than an older bladed key did, and that is simply the nature of the technology. These are the things that move the cost:
- Duplicate or all keys lost, since all keys lost requires server-code access and more labor
- How many fobs you need programmed
- Whether we come to you with a mobile van or you bring the truck to the storefront
- Time of day, because we answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and after-hours work is a different job than a weekday visit
- Whether the fob you have is actually dead or only needs a new battery
What do we confirm by VIN, and why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
The key setup above is verified for the 2024 Tacoma. Even so, we confirm by VIN and in person before ordering or programming a fob. A VIN lets us match the exact fob for your truck, and we do not guess on a part that has to talk to your immobilizer.
The common problems with this setup are a fob battery that fails and shows a key-not-detected message, the higher replacement cost compared with older keys, and fobs that are water damaged. A fob that went through the wash or sat in a wet pocket can fail even with a fresh battery. Bring it in and we will check it before you pay for a replacement.
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront plus mobile vans, and one company handles your call from start to finish with no dispatch middlemen. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a 2024 Tacoma key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All keys lost is possible for this truck. It generally requires Toyota server codes through locksmith-credentialed access, so it is more involved than copying an existing fob. We confirm your VIN and ownership first.
Do I need my original key to get a duplicate?
For a straightforward duplicate, yes, the original key needs to be present. Without it, the job becomes an all-keys-lost situation, which we can also handle.
Is the 2024 Tacoma key a transponder key or a smart key?
It is a smart proximity key with push-button start. The chip family is 8A-BA, a 128-bit DST-AES smart transponder, and it is verified for this year.
My Tacoma says the key is not detected. Do I need a new fob?
Not always. A failing fob battery is a common cause of that message. A water-damaged fob can also trigger it, so we check the fob before recommending a replacement.
How is the new key programmed?
Programming is done through the OBD port. It requires NASTF SDRM-related secure access, so it is not a do-it-yourself job and not something a generic cloning tool handles.
Does the fob have a backup key inside?
Yes. The 2024 Tacoma fob includes a mechanical backup key that opens the door if the fob battery is dead.
Will you come to me, or do I have to bring the truck in?
Either works. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will work out which fits your situation.
