2016 Toyota Tacoma key replacement

A 2016 Toyota Tacoma on key-start trims uses a bladed transponder key with an H-family (128-bit DST-AES) chip, and we can cut and program a replacement by OBD, even if every key is lost. Limited and option-package trucks differ. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366 and we'll confirm by VIN.

Bladed H-chip key on key-start trims; Limited and option-package trucks use the 8A smart system with push-button start.

What kind of key does a 2016 Tacoma use?

Most 2016 Tacomas are key-start trucks. They use a bladed transponder key: a metal blade cut to fit the ignition and door locks, with a chip inside the plastic head. The chip family is H, a 128-bit DST-AES design. The truck will not start unless it reads a chip it recognizes, so the cut blade alone is not enough.

That matters most to anyone holding a hardware-store copy. A plain copy with no chip may turn in the ignition, but it will not start the truck. If a copy was made that way, it needs a real transponder key before it is useful as a spare.

There is one exception. Limited trims and trucks with certain option packages use the 8A smart system with push-button start. Those are a different job from the bladed key described here.

  • Key-start trims: bladed key with an H-chip (128-bit DST-AES).
  • Programming is done through the OBD port. It does not require NASTF/SDRM credentials.
  • The key has a mechanical backup blade, so the physical lock still matters even if the electronics are fine.

Can you duplicate a 2016 Tacoma key, or is it all keys lost?

Both are possible on this truck. If you still have a working key, we can copy from it. For this setup the original key needs to be on hand for a standard duplication, so do not hand your only key to anyone and then lose track of it.

If every key is gone, that is still workable. We can make a new key to match the ignition and program it to the truck over the OBD port. It is a longer job than a simple copy because there is no working key to start from, but it does not mean replacing the whole ignition system.

If you have one key left, copy it now. Adding a spare while you still hold a working key is the easier and more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost situation.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the trim and whether the truck starts with a key or a button.
  2. We confirm the key type, using your VIN where needed.
  3. We cut the blade and prepare the H-chip key.
  4. We program it to the truck through the OBD port and test it in the ignition, doors and any other lock you use.
  5. Bring any old keys you have. We check whether a worn blade is part of the problem.

What affects the price of a 2016 Tacoma key?

We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the real answer depends on your truck and your situation. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Whether you have a working key to copy or all keys are lost.
  • Whether your truck is a key-start model or a smart-key, push-button truck.
  • How many keys you want made and programmed in one visit.
  • Whether the ignition or door lock is also worn and needs attention.
  • Where the truck is. We have a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, so we can come to you or you can come to us.

Worn keys and worn ignitions on older trucks

Two of the common problems on this generation are mechanical. High-mileage trucks can develop worn ignition wafers, which makes the key feel loose or hard to turn. A worn key blade can also stop turning the lock, even though the chip is fine.

In both cases a fresh key can help, but if the ignition itself is worn, a new key may not solve it. We look at the blade and the lock together before deciding what is needed, so you do not pay for the wrong fix.

We cannot tell from the year alone which of those a particular truck has, so we check it in person.

What we confirm by VIN, and why call us

The key-start versus smart-key split is the part we always verify. The year tells us the likely setup, but options vary by truck, so we confirm by VIN or in person before cutting or programming anything. If your Tacoma has push-button start, we handle it as the smart-system job it is.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2016 Tacoma have a chip in the key?

Key-start trims do. The key carries an H-family (128-bit DST-AES) transponder chip, and the truck will not start without a matching chip.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Tacoma?

No. A copy without a transponder chip may fit the lock, but it will not start the truck. It needs a programmed chip key.

Can you make a key if I lost all my 2016 Tacoma keys?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible for this setup. We make a key to fit the ignition and program it through the OBD port.

Do you need my original key to make a copy?

For a standard duplication on this truck, yes, the original key needs to be on hand. If you have none left, that is an all-keys-lost job.

Does my Tacoma have push-button start?

Most key-start trucks do not. Limited and option-package trucks use the 8A smart system with push-button start. We confirm which you have by VIN.

My key is hard to turn. Do I need a new key or a new ignition?

It can be either. Worn blades and worn ignition wafers on high-mileage trucks are both common. We check the blade and the lock before recommending a fix.

Do you come to me?

Yes. We run mobile vans and also have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour to discuss it.
