The 2016–2020 Sienna uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota Sienna key guide.

What kind of key does a 2016 Sienna use?
The key-start 2016 Sienna uses a transponder key. Inside the plastic head is a small chip from the H family (128-bit DST-AES), and the van's immobilizer looks for that chip's signal before it lets the engine run. If the chip is missing or was never paired with your van, the key can look perfect and still do nothing but spin the starter dead.
That is the first thing to understand if someone offers you a quick copy from a hardware store. A plain metal copy may fit the ignition, but without a chip that has been programmed to the van, it will not start the car. Plenty of people discover this only after paying for the copy.
This setup is not push-to-start. You put a key in the ignition and turn it. The key also has a mechanical blade, which matters because the blade has to be cut correctly for the ignition and door locks as well as being programmed for the immobilizer. Both halves of the job have to be right.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?
For this Sienna, making a duplicate is the simpler situation, because we have an original key to work from. Our data shows an original key is needed for straightforward duplication, so if you still have one working key, tell us before it goes missing too. Adding a spare while you have one in hand is the more economical route compared with starting from nothing.
If every key is gone, it is still possible. Our data confirms all-keys-lost work can be done on this van. It simply involves more steps: the blade has to be cut without a key to copy from, and a new transponder key has to be introduced to the immobilizer from scratch.
- One working key: we cut a new blade and program a new chip key to the van.
- No working keys: we cut a key to the lock, then program it through the OBD port.
- Programming goes through the OBD port under the dash, and our data shows it does not require NASTF SDRM secure-database access.
How we handle a Sienna key job
The process is the same whether you call from a driveway, a parking structure, or the storefront.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have any working key left.
- We confirm the key setup for your van, including whether it is the key-start version this page covers.
- We cut the blade to fit the ignition and door lock.
- We pair the new transponder key to the van through the OBD port and test that it starts the engine.
- We check the blade in the door and ignition, and test any spare keys you want added.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2016 Sienna key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job is not always the same one. These are the things that move the cost:
- Whether you have a working key. Duplicating usually costs less effort than an all-keys-lost situation.
- How many keys you want. Programming a second key during the same visit is usually more economical than a separate trip later.
- Where the van is. Mobile service to your location differs from you bringing the van to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- Time of day. We answer 24 hours a day, and late-night calls involve different scheduling than daytime ones.
- Key condition and ignition wear. A worn ignition can mean extra work before a new key behaves properly.
Common Sienna key problems, and what we confirm by VIN
Three issues come up with this generation: worn ignition wafers on high-mileage vans, a worn key blade that no longer turns the lock, and non-transponder copies that will not start the van. The first two are mechanical, and a new programmed key alone may not fix them if the ignition itself is tired. We will tell you if that is what we see.
One honest caveat. Our data for this year notes that the key-start trims use this transponder setup, while smart-key trims continue a different DST80-based smart system through 2020. If you are not sure which version you own, or the key in your hand does not match what we describe, we confirm by VIN and in person before cutting or programming anything. We would rather check than sell you the wrong key.
Wilshire Lock & Key has served Los Angeles since 1987 with a storefront and mobile vans, one company with no dispatch middlemen, and David oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. Frequently asked questions
Can a hardware store copy start my 2016 Sienna?
Not if it has no transponder chip. A plain metal copy may fit the lock, but the van's immobilizer will not let the engine run without a programmed chip key.
Can you make a 2016 Sienna key if I lost every key?
Yes. All-keys-lost work is possible on this setup. We cut a key to the lock and program it to the van through the OBD port. It takes more work than a duplicate.
Is the 2016 Sienna a push-to-start van?
The key-start version covered here is not push-to-start. You insert the key and turn it. Smart-key trims use a different system, so we confirm by VIN if you are unsure which you have.
Do you need my original key to make a copy?
For a straightforward duplicate, yes, an original key is needed to work from. If you no longer have one, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job.
My key goes in but will not turn. Is that a programming problem?
Usually not. A worn key blade or worn ignition wafers, which are common on high-mileage Siennas, is the more likely cause. We inspect both before deciding what is needed.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the van in?
Either. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will sort out which makes sense for your situation.
