2011 Toyota Sienna key replacement

A 2011 Toyota Sienna with a standard key uses a G-chip (4D-72) transponder key, so a hardware-store copy may turn the lock but won't start the van. We cut and program replacements, including when every key is lost, by OBD. Call (213) 577-1366 and we'll confirm your trim by VIN.

The 2011–2014 Sienna uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota Sienna key guide.

Key-start trims (TOY44G, G stamp on the blade); smart-key trims (XLE/Limited) use a DST80-based smart system (TMS37126 'Page1 98', HYQ14ADR-family fobs) that runs 2011-2020.

What kind of key does a 2011 Toyota Sienna use?

Most 2011 Siennas with a regular key-start ignition use a transponder key. Inside the plastic head sits a chip from the G family (4D-72), and the blade is the TOY44G profile, usually stamped with a G. When you turn the key, the van reads the chip. If the chip's code doesn't match what the van expects, the engine won't start, even if the blade turns the ignition freely.

In practice, that means a plain metal copy from a hardware store is not a real solution for this van. It might fit the lock, but it has no chip, so it won't start the engine. This setup also has a mechanical backup key, which is a plain blade for the physical locks. It is not a substitute for a programmed key.

The common problems on this van are mechanical as often as electronic:

  • Worn ignition wafers on high-mileage vans, which make the key feel gritty or stop it from turning
  • A worn key blade that no longer turns the lock, even though the chip is fine
  • Non-transponder copies that fit the ignition but will not start the car

Duplicate or all keys lost: how does it work on this van?

Duplicating a 2011 Sienna key requires an original key in hand. With one working key, we cut a new blade and program the new chip to the van. That is the simpler job and the more economical route, which is why we always suggest making a spare while you still have one.

All keys lost is also possible on this van. We cut a blade without an original, then program a new transponder key through the OBD port under the dash. For this setup the programming does not require NASTF SDRM access, so it doesn't depend on a special registry credential. Because our mobile vans come to you, the Sienna generally doesn't have to be towed anywhere first.

If your key turns hard or sticks, bring it up when you call. A worn blade can often be replaced with a fresh cut, but if the ignition wafers are worn, a new key alone may not fix the feel, and we'll tell you that plainly.

How we handle a 2011 Sienna key job

The steps are the same whether you're in a parking lot or in your driveway.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. It's answered 24 hours a day. Tell us the trim and whether you have any working key.
  2. We confirm the key system from your VIN, since this model year has more than one setup (more on that below).
  3. We verify that you own the van before cutting or programming anything.
  4. We cut the blade to the TOY44G profile, from your original key if you have one, or without one if all keys are lost.
  5. We program the new transponder through the OBD port, then test starting the van and turning the door and ignition locks.

What affects the price of a 2011 Sienna key?

We don't quote a number without knowing your situation, and a page can't know it. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Whether you have an original key to copy, or all keys are lost
  • Which system your van has: standard key-start or the smart-key setup on higher trims
  • How many keys you need cut and programmed
  • Where the van is and what time you're calling, since a night or weekend mobile call differs from a daytime visit to our shop
  • The condition of the ignition. Worn wafers may mean ignition work on top of the key itself
  • Whether you want a spare made now, which is usually the lighter-cost option compared with doing it after losing the last one

What we confirm by VIN, and why call us

Here's the honest caveat. Our verified information for this year covers the key-start setup: the G-chip (4D-72) transponder, the TOY44G blade, and OBD programming. Higher trims, XLE and Limited, use a different smart-key system built on DST80 technology, with HYQ14ADR-family fobs, and that same system runs from 2011 through 2020. We don't assume those details from the model year alone. We confirm by VIN and in person before we start, so you aren't told one thing and handed another.

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile vans, and the same company answers your call and does the work, with no dispatch middlemen. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a hardware-store key start my 2011 Sienna?

No. A non-transponder copy can fit the ignition, but it has no chip, so the van won't start. The key needs a G-chip (4D-72) transponder programmed to your van.

Can you make a key if I've lost every key?

Yes. All keys lost is possible on this setup. We cut a blade without an original and program a new transponder through the OBD port. Call (213) 577-1366 and we'll confirm the system by VIN first.

Do I have to go to the dealer?

Not for the key-start setup. The data for this year shows OBD programming with no NASTF SDRM requirement. For smart-key trims, we confirm the specifics by VIN before we promise anything.

How do I know if my Sienna is key-start or smart-key?

Trim is the main clue. Key-start trims use a blade stamped with a G. XLE and Limited trims use the smart-key system. If you're unsure, give us the VIN and we'll tell you which one you have.

My key is hard to turn. Do I need a new key?

Maybe. A worn blade can stop turning the lock, and worn ignition wafers are common on high-mileage vans. We check both so you don't pay for a key that won't fix the problem.

Should I get a spare made now?

Yes, if you still have a working key. Duplicating needs an original key in hand, and it's usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job later.

How much does a replacement key cost?

It depends on whether you have an original key, which system your van has, how many keys you need, your location and time of day, and the ignition's condition. Call and we'll go through what applies to your van.

We cover all these cities
