2023 Toyota RAV4 key replacement in Los Angeles

The 2023 RAV4 uses a push-button smart proximity key, the HYQ14FLA fob with an 8A-BA chip. We can replace it with a working fob in hand or when every key is lost, though all-keys-lost needs Toyota server access. Call (213) 577-1366 and have your VIN ready.

HYQ14FLA fob (8A-BA type); final XA50 years. For all-keys-lost on 2020+ smart-key cars, US jobs generally require Toyota server codes with locksmith-credentialed (LSID/NASTF VSP) TIS access; add-a-key with a working fob is less restricted.

What kind of key does a 2023 Toyota RAV4 use?

The 2023 RAV4 is a push-to-start vehicle with a smart proximity key. The fob is the HYQ14FLA, which carries an 8A-BA chip, a 128-bit DST-AES smart-key family. That chip family is verified against published transponder references, so it is not a guess. This is also one of the last model years of the XA50 generation.

For you, that means the car reads the fob from your pocket or bag, unlocks when you touch the handle, and starts when you press the brake and the button. It also means a new fob cannot simply be cut and copied at a hardware counter. The fob has to be registered to the car's immobilizer through the OBD port.

Inside the fob is a mechanical backup key. If the battery dies, that blade still opens the door. Before you pay for a replacement, check the battery. A fob battery failure that triggers a 'key not detected' message is a much smaller fix than a new fob. Water-damaged fobs are the other common problem, and a fob that went through the wash or a swim often has to be replaced.

Spare key or all keys lost: what is different on this RAV4?

If you still have a working fob, adding another is the simpler job. Duplicating needs an original key to work from, and with one in hand we register the new fob over the OBD port. On 2020-and-newer smart-key Toyotas, add-a-key with a working fob is less restricted than the alternative.

If every fob is gone, it is still possible, but it is a different job. On 2020+ smart-key cars in the US, all-keys-lost work generally requires Toyota server codes, which come through locksmith-credentialed access to Toyota's technical information system, tied to the NASTF vehicle security professional registry. That access is a gate, not a formality. On the first call we will tell you plainly whether your situation can be done by us in the field or needs a dealer.

So the most useful question we ask is whether any fob exists, including a spare in a drawer at home. A spare you can find may turn an all-keys-lost problem into the simpler add-a-key job.

How we replace a RAV4 smart key, step by step

Here is how the work usually goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. Tell us the year, model, and whether any fob still works, even poorly.
  2. We ask for your VIN and confirm you own the vehicle with ID and registration.
  3. We confirm the correct fob for your VIN before anything is ordered or cut.
  4. We come to you in a mobile van, or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd if it can get there.
  5. We register the new fob to the car through the OBD port, then test lock, unlock, push-button start, and the mechanical backup blade before we call the job finished.

What affects the cost of a 2023 RAV4 key replacement?

We will not quote a number on a web page, because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the factors that move it:

  • Whether you have a working fob. Adding a key is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
  • Whether server-code access is required. All-keys-lost on this setup involves extra steps and credentialed access that add to the work.
  • The fob itself. A smart fob costs more than the bladed keys on older cars, and that is the most common surprise for owners.
  • Whether the fob is actually the problem. A dead battery is a far lighter-cost fix than a new fob, so we check that first.
  • Where and when you need us. A mobile call to your location differs from bringing the car to the storefront, and after-hours work differs from daytime.

What we confirm by VIN, and why call us

Our data lists the HYQ14FLA fob with the 8A-BA chip for this year, and it is verified. Trims and mid-year production changes can still vary, so we confirm the exact fob by VIN or in person before we order or program anything. If your car turns out to be a dealer-only case, we will say so rather than let you wait on a job we cannot finish.

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, so there is no dispatch middleman between your call and the technician. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2023 Toyota RAV4 have a push-to-start smart key?

Yes. It uses a smart proximity key, the HYQ14FLA fob with an 8A-BA chip, and starts with a push button. There is also a mechanical backup key inside the fob.

My RAV4 says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A failing fob battery is a common cause of that message, and replacing it costs far less than a new fob. If the battery is fine, or the fob was water-damaged, the fob itself may need replacing.

Can you make a spare if I still have one working fob?

Yes. With a working fob, adding another is the less restricted route. We register the new fob to the car over the OBD port.

Can you make a key if I lost every fob?

It is possible, but on 2020+ smart-key Toyotas it generally requires Toyota server codes through locksmith-credentialed access. We tell you up front whether we can complete it or whether it needs the dealer.

Can a fob be copied like an old bladed key?

No. Duplication needs an original key to work from, and the new fob must be registered to the car through the OBD port. It is programming, not cutting.

How do you decide what the replacement will cost?

It depends on whether you have a working fob, whether server-code access is needed, the fob itself, and your location and time of day. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will explain what applies to your car.
