The 2021–2022 RAV4 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota RAV4 key guide.

Two smart-fob types overlap these years — HYQ14FBC (8A-AA, cataloged 2019-2022) and HYQ14FLA (8A-BA, cataloged 2021-2025) — so we match the fob to the vehicle before ordering. For all-keys-lost on 2020+ smart-key cars, US jobs generally require Toyota server codes with locksmith-credentialed (LSID/NASTF VSP) TIS access; add-a-key with a working fob is less restricted.
What kind of key does a 2021 RAV4 use?
The 2021 RAV4 uses a smart-proximity key. The car senses the fob in your pocket or bag, and you start it with the push-button. The fob carries an 8A chip, a 128-bit DST-AES family, which is why a plain hardware-store copy will never start this car.
Inside the fob is a mechanical backup key. It is there for a dead fob battery or a dead car battery, when the door won't unlock electronically. It opens the door only. The car still needs a properly programmed fob to start.
For you, the main consequence is that this is not an old bladed-key job. The fob has to be the right hardware and then be programmed to your specific vehicle. That is why replacement costs more than it did for older Toyotas.
Spare fob or all keys lost: what's the difference?
If you still have a working fob, adding another is the simpler job. The original key needs to be present so the car can be taught the new one. This is less restricted than the alternative, and it is the better time to make a spare, before you are stranded.
If every fob is gone, it is still possible to replace the key on this RAV4, but it is a more involved job. On 2020 and newer smart-key Toyotas, all-keys-lost work in the US generally requires Toyota server codes, obtained through locksmith-credentialed access (LSID and the NASTF VSP) to Toyota's technical information system. The new fob is then programmed through the OBD port.
In practice that means an all-keys-lost RAV4 takes more steps and more time than adding a key. We will tell you plainly which of the two situations you are in before any work starts.
How we handle a 2021 RAV4 key job
The order matters here, because ordering the wrong fob is the most common way these jobs go sideways.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour, and tell us whether you have a working fob, a dead one, or none.
- We collect the VIN and confirm which fob your RAV4 takes, since two fob types overlap in these years.
- If you are stuck somewhere, a mobile van comes to the car. Otherwise you can bring the RAV4 to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- We cut or confirm the mechanical backup key if needed, then program the new fob to the car through the OBD port.
- We test the fob: lock, unlock, push-to-start, and the backup key in the door, before we call the job done.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2021 RAV4 key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your situation. These are the things that move the cost:
- Whether you have a working fob. Adding a key is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
- The fob type your VIN calls for. Smart fobs cost more than bladed keys, and the right one has to be ordered.
- The all-keys-lost process, which involves obtaining Toyota server codes and extra steps.
- Whether the car is at home, stuck on the road, or can come to the shop. Mobile service and after-hours calls carry different costs than a daytime visit.
- The condition of the old fob. A fob with a dead battery needs only a new battery, which is the lightest-cost fix of all. A water-damaged fob often needs replacing.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
Two smart-fob types overlap these years. One is the HYQ14FBC (8A-AA), cataloged for 2019 to 2022. The other is the HYQ14FLA (8A-BA), cataloged for 2021 to 2025. Since a 2021 RAV4 can fall in the overlap, we match the fob to your vehicle by VIN and in person before ordering. We would rather check than sell you a fob that won't pair.
We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, so there is no dispatch middleman between your call and the technician. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If your situation turns out to be one we can't resolve, we will say so plainly.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it. For more on the model, see the Toyota RAV4 key guide or the Toyota key overview. Other makes are under car key replacement, or you can contact us directly.
Frequently asked questions
My 2021 RAV4 says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?
Not necessarily. Fob battery failure is the most common cause of that message. Replace the battery first. If the message continues, the fob may be damaged, and we can test it.
Can I get a copy made from my existing 2021 RAV4 fob?
Yes. The original key needs to be present, and the new fob is programmed to the car through the OBD port. A working fob makes this the simpler job.
I lost every key to my 2021 RAV4. Can you still make one?
It is possible, but it is more involved. All-keys-lost on a 2020 or newer smart-key Toyota generally requires Toyota server codes through credentialed access. Call us and we will explain how your situation would go.
Will the mechanical key inside the fob start the car?
No. It opens the door when the fob battery is dead or the electronics won't respond. Starting the car requires a programmed smart fob.
Why do you need my VIN?
Two different smart-fob types overlap in the 2021 model year. The VIN lets us match the correct fob before ordering.
Is a water-damaged fob repairable?
Sometimes a fob that got wet only needs a new battery, but water damage often means replacement. We can check it and tell you which.
