The 2013–2018 RAV4 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota RAV4 key guide.

The 2013 RAV4 was among the first Toyota applications of the 128-bit H chip (TOY44H). Smart-key trims use the 8A smart system with push-button start.
What kind of key does a 2013 RAV4 use?
Most 2013 RAV4s use a transponder key: a metal blade cut to fit your door and ignition locks, with a chip hidden in the plastic head. The chip belongs to the H family, a 128-bit DST-AES type, and the matching key blank is the TOY44H. The 2013 model year was among the first Toyota applications of this 128-bit chip, so don't assume a key from some other Toyota is the right one. We check the chip family before we cut anything.
The chip is the part owners tend to underestimate. The car's computer looks for the chip's code when the key goes into the ignition. A blade that is cut perfectly but carries no programmed chip, such as a hardware-store copy, will not start the car. It may feel like the key fits, but the engine will not run.
Two other problems show up on higher-mileage RAV4s: worn ignition wafers, and a worn key blade that no longer turns the lock smoothly. They feel similar from the driver's seat but they are different repairs. Sometimes a fresh key solves it. Sometimes the ignition lock itself needs attention. We try the key first and tell you plainly if the lock is the real issue.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?
If you still have a working key, the job is simpler. Duplicating this key needs an original to work from. We cut the new blade and program the new chip so the car accepts it. It is a good time to make a spare, because a second key made now is far less trouble than starting from nothing later.
If every key is gone, that is still possible on this RAV4. There is no original to copy, so the blade is cut from the lock or the vehicle information, and the new key is programmed to the car from scratch. It takes more steps, but it is a routine job for us. Programming on this setup is done through the OBD port, and our data shows it does not require a NASTF SDRM credential. Our mobile vans come to the car, so you usually do not need to arrange a tow just to get a key made.
- We confirm who you are and that the vehicle is yours, and we identify the car by its VIN.
- We look at the ignition and door locks and confirm which key type your RAV4 actually has.
- We cut the blade, either from your original key or, if all keys are lost, from the lock or vehicle information.
- We program the new transponder chip to the car through the OBD port.
- We test every key on the door lock and the ignition, and start the engine before we finish.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2013 RAV4 key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the real cost depends on your situation. These are the factors that move it:
- Whether you have a working key. A duplicate is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job.
- The key type. A standard transponder key and a push-button smart key are different parts with different programming.
- How many keys you need cut and programmed in one visit.
- The condition of the locks. Worn wafers or a worn blade can add repair work on top of the key itself.
- Where the car is and what time you call. A van coming to you late at night is a different job than a visit to our storefront.
- Whether the key is cut to a plain blade or needs extra cutting work to match a worn lock.
What we confirm by VIN before we start
Our verified data for this year points to a transponder key, with no push-to-start. That is the setup most owners will have. Toyota also sold smart-key trims of the 2013 RAV4 that use the 8A smart system with push-button start, and those are a different key with a different process. If you aren't sure which one you have, tell us when you call. We confirm by VIN and by looking at the car in person, and we won't guess over the phone.
A mechanical backup key is part of this setup, which is useful to know: it works the lock if the electronics ever fail. We still check on the vehicle what your particular key does.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 2013 Toyota RAV4 need a chip key to start?
Yes. The standard setup is a transponder key with a 128-bit H chip. A key cut to the right shape but with no programmed chip, like a typical hardware-store copy, may fit the lock but will not start the engine.
Can you make a 2013 RAV4 key if I lost all of them?
Yes. All keys lost is possible on this vehicle. We cut a new blade, program the chip through the OBD port, and test everything before we leave. It takes more steps than a duplicate but it is routine for us.
Do I need my original key to get a copy made?
For a straight duplicate, yes, an original key is needed. If you no longer have one, we treat it as an all-keys-lost job, which is still doable.
Is my 2013 RAV4 a push-button start?
Our verified data lists the standard key as a transponder key without push-to-start. Some trims used a smart key with push-button start. We confirm which one you have by VIN and in person.
My key turns hard or stopped turning the lock. Do I need a new key?
Often a worn blade is the cause, and a new key helps. On high-mileage RAV4s, worn ignition wafers can also be the problem. We try the key first and tell you honestly if the lock needs work.
How is the new key programmed?
Through the car's OBD port. Our data shows this application does not require a NASTF SDRM credential for programming.
Will you come to my car?
Yes. We run mobile service vans across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and we also have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 any time.
