The 2010–2012 RAV4 uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Toyota RAV4 key guide.

What kind of key does a 2010 RAV4 use?
The 2010 RAV4 is a remote-head key car. The lock buttons are built into the head of a metal-blade key, and there is no push-to-start system on this year. You put the key in the ignition and turn it, the old-fashioned way.
Inside the plastic head is a transponder chip. For this year the verified chip family is G (4D-72). That chip talks to the car's immobilizer, and if the code doesn't match, the engine will not run, even when the blade turns the ignition cylinder perfectly. Programming on this model is done through the OBD port under the dash, and it does not require NASTF SDRM access, which keeps the process simpler than on some newer vehicles.
There is also a mechanical backup key for this setup, so the car does not depend only on the electronics for access.
- Key type: remote-head, blade-style, no push-to-start
- Chip: G (4D-72), verified from two catalog sources
- Programming: OBD port, no NASTF SDRM needed
- Common wear problems: cracked head shells, worn buttons, dead remote batteries
Spare copy or all keys lost: how does it work on this RAV4?
If you still have a working key, making a spare is the easier job. For this setup the original key is needed to duplicate, so bring it with you or have it with you when our van arrives. We cut the blade, program the chip, and pair the remote buttons to the car.
If every key is gone, replacement is still possible on this year. We cut a new blade to the lock, program a new transponder through the OBD port, and set up the remote. It takes more steps than a simple copy, and it is the reason an all-keys-lost job usually costs more than a spare.
One warning that saves people grief: a hardware-store copy that is only a cut piece of metal will open the door and may even turn in the ignition, but it will not start the car. It has no programmed chip. If a copy turns but the engine stays dead, that is why.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and whether you have any working key.
- We confirm the key details by VIN before cutting anything.
- We cut the blade to your lock, using the original key or from the car if all keys are lost.
- We program the transponder through the OBD port and pair the remote.
- You test the ignition, door locks and remote buttons before we finish.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2010 RAV4 key?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your situation. The main factors are straightforward.
- Whether you have a working key to copy from or all keys are lost
- How many keys you want made at once, since setup work is shared across them
- Whether you need only a blade and chip, or a remote-head with working buttons
- The condition of your existing key, since a cracked shell sometimes only needs a new case rather than a whole new key
- Where you are: coming to our Westwood storefront is usually the more economical route, while a mobile van visit adds the convenience of us coming to you
What we confirm by VIN on this year
One detail on this year is not clean-cut. The transpondery.com source lists the 80-bit G chip from 2010, but some catalogs still show the older dot chip for early-2010 production. So two RAV4s built the same model year can have different chips.
We don't guess about that. We check your VIN, and we look for the G stamp on the key blade, before we order or cut anything. If your car turns out to be an early-production one, we'll tell you plainly what that changes before any work begins.

Frequently asked questions
Does the 2010 Toyota RAV4 have a push-to-start key?
No. The 2010 RAV4 uses a remote-head key that goes into the ignition and turns. There is no push-to-start system on this year.
Can you make a 2010 RAV4 key if I lost all my keys?
Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible on this setup. We cut a blade to the lock, program a new transponder through the OBD port, and pair the remote.
Do I need my original key to make a copy?
For a duplicate, yes, the original key is needed. If you have no working key, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job instead.
Why won't my hardware-store copy start the car?
A copy with no transponder chip can't pass the immobilizer check. It might open the door, but the engine will not start until a chip is programmed to the car.
Which transponder chip does a 2010 RAV4 use?
The verified chip family is G (4D-72). Some catalogs still show an older dot chip for early-2010 production, so we check the VIN and the G stamp on the blade to be sure.
Can a cracked key head or dead remote be fixed without a new key?
Often the problem is a cracked shell, worn buttons or a dead remote battery. Depending on the condition, a new shell or battery may solve it without a full replacement. We look at the key first.
Where do you do the key work?
At our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, or by mobile van. Call (213) 577-1366 to talk through which makes sense for your situation.
