Mixed-chip year: transpondery.com lists both 8A-BA and (from 10/2023 production) NXP Hitag-AES 4A-BA smart keys running in parallel — we identify the system from the fob/VIN before quoting. Aftermarket listings for 2024-2025 Prius keys still show 8A-family chips, so the 4A-BA running change rests on a single catalog so far. All-keys-lost on 8A-BA cars follows Toyota's TIS pass-code reset (T-SB-0013-24 covers 2022-2024); 4A coverage varies by tool.
What kind of key does a 2024 Prius use?
Your 2024 Prius runs on a smart-proximity fob. You keep it in a pocket or bag, the car senses it, and you start the car with the push-button. There's no ignition slot to turn. Inside the fob is a small mechanical blade for the driver's door, which is your backup if the fob goes dead or the car can't read it.
For an owner, that setup means a few practical things:
- Replacing a lost fob is a bigger job, and costs more, than replacing the bladed keys of older cars.
- A dead fob battery is the most common complaint. The dash says the key isn't detected, though the fob is fine.
- Water damage is the other regular problem. A fob that went through the wash or sat in a wet pocket can stop talking to the car.
- The hidden blade opens the door, but it won't start the car by itself.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what's different?
If you still have a working fob, making another is the simpler case. The original key needs to be present so the car can be taught the new one alongside it. Bring the fob you have, even if it's flaky.
If every key is gone, replacement is still possible on this car. It just takes more steps. The car's immobilizer has to be reset before a new fob will be accepted. On 8A-BA cars, that generally follows Toyota's pass-code reset procedure, which a service bulletin (T-SB-0013-24) covers for 2022 through 2024 models. For the 4A-BA fobs, how well that works varies by programming tool.
Programming on this car also sits behind security access. It requires NASTF SDRM credentials, the industry's registry for vehicle security data. It isn't something a roadside operator does with a generic gadget. It's fair to ask any shop, us included, how they handle that step before you agree to the work.
What we can't tell you from a catalog
Honesty matters more than a tidy answer here, so this is where the data stops. 2024 is a mixed-chip year for the Prius. One parts catalog lists both 8A-BA smart keys and, from October 2023 production, a newer NXP Hitag-AES 4A-BA version running in parallel. Aftermarket listings for 2024 and 2025 Prius keys still show 8A-family chips, so the 4A-BA change rests on a single catalog so far.
We haven't verified which chip family your car carries, and we won't guess. We confirm it from your fob and your VIN, and we confirm it in person, before we quote or order anything. Buying a fob online by year and model alone is the easiest way to end up with a key that won't program.
If your car does turn out to need the newer 4A-BA system and the tools available can't handle it, we'll tell you that plainly rather than start a job we can't finish. A dealer may be the right route in that case.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2024 Prius key?
We don't quote a figure before we know what we're working with, and a fair quote depends on a few real variables:
- Which chip family and fob your car uses, which comes back to the VIN check above.
- Whether you have a working key to copy from or it's an all-keys-lost situation, which takes more labor and equipment.
- Whether the fob you have is worth keeping. A dead battery is a small fix, while a water-damaged fob may need replacing.
- Whether you need the emergency blade cut as well as the fob.
- Where the car is. A car in our Westwood storefront lot is a different job than one that needs a van sent to it, and time of day matters for after-hours calls.
How we handle it, and why call us
We've been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans. You deal with one company, not a dispatch service passing your call to a stranger. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they touch your car. That includes us.
For a Prius key, the sequence usually goes like this:
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour, and tell us what happened: lost, dead, or damaged.
- We ask for your VIN and a description of the fob you have, if any.
- We identify the key system, tell you what the job involves, and explain what drives the cost.
- We make or program the key, test that the car starts and the doors work, and test the backup blade.
- Any leftover fobs get checked, so you know every key works with the car.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2024 Prius have a transponder chip?
It has a smart key with electronics that the car authenticates, but we haven't verified the exact chip family. 8A-BA and 4A-BA fobs both appear for this year. We confirm by VIN and by looking at your fob.
Can you make a 2024 Prius key if I lost all of them?
Yes, all-keys-lost is possible on this car. It takes more steps than a duplicate, and the method depends on the chip system. The 8A-BA cars follow Toyota's pass-code reset. Coverage for 4A-BA varies by tool, so we check first.
My Prius says key not detected. Do I need a new key?
Often not. A weak fob battery is the usual cause. Try the hidden blade for the door, then hold the fob against the start button as the owner's manual describes. If it still fails, bring it in and we'll test it before replacing anything.
Why is a Prius fob costlier to replace than an older key?
It's an electronic fob with secure programming, not a cut piece of metal with a chip. The car has to be taught the new fob through a security-gated process, which takes specific equipment and access.
Do I need to bring the car to you?
Not always. We have mobile vans as well as the Westwood storefront. For some situations, though, we'll want to see the car in person to confirm the key system. Contact us or call and we'll tell you which applies.
Where can I see other Prius years or other Toyota models?
