2005 Toyota Highlander key replacement

A 2005 Toyota Highlander uses a transponder key with a 4D-67 chip, so a plain hardware-store copy will not start the engine. We cut and program replacements, including when every key is lost. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366 any hour, any day.

What kind of key does a 2005 Highlander use?

The 2005 Highlander is a transponder-key vehicle. It is not push-to-start. You put a metal-bladed key in the ignition and turn it. Inside the plastic head of that key is a small chip from the 4D-67 family. The car's immobilizer reads the chip when you turn the key, and if the code does not match, the engine will not run. The chip data for this year is verified.

What that means for you is simple. A key cut at a hardware store may turn the lock, but without a properly programmed chip the car will not start. We see this often: someone gets a cheap copy, it feels fine in the ignition, and then the engine does nothing. The blade and the chip are two separate jobs, and both have to be done right.

This year also has a mechanical backup key, so the blade works the mechanical locks on its own. Starting the engine still depends on the chip. If you want to compare this year with other model years, the Toyota Highlander key page lists them.

Can you duplicate a 2005 Highlander key, or is it all keys lost?

Both situations can be handled for this setup. Which one you are in changes the work involved.

If you still have one working key, duplication is the more straightforward route. The original key is needed as the starting point, so bring it with you or have it with the car. We cut a new blade and program the new chip to the vehicle, and you end up with a spare before the only key you have goes missing.

If every key is gone, an all-keys-lost job is possible on this Highlander. It takes more steps because there is no working key to work from, but it does not mean the car has to be towed to a dealer or that you need a new ignition. The programming for this year is done through the OBD port under the dashboard. For this year, our data shows no NASTF SDRM access is required for that programming.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have any working key.
  2. We confirm the details of your vehicle, including the VIN, so the blade and chip match.
  3. A technician comes to the car with the van, or you bring it to our Westwood storefront.
  4. We cut the key blade, usually by code or from the lock, and fit a 4D-67 transponder key.
  5. We program the chip through the OBD port and test it in the ignition and the locks before you drive away.

What affects the price of a 2005 Highlander key?

We will not quote a number in a web page, because the real cost depends on your situation. These are the things that move it:

  • Duplicate or all keys lost. A copy from a working key is usually the more economical route. All keys lost takes longer and costs more.
  • Where the work happens. A mobile visit to your car is different from you driving to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
  • Condition of the locks. A worn key or worn ignition can mean extra cutting or repair work before a new key will work well.
  • How many keys you want. Having two made in one visit usually costs less overall than coming back later.
  • Time of day. Late-night and holiday calls are handled differently from daytime appointments.

What about wear on an older Highlander?

The common problems on this year are about age and mileage. Ignition wafers wear on high-mileage cars. A key blade can wear until it no longer turns the lock, or it sticks and turns only with some wiggling. If your key has been getting harder to turn, a fresh copy cut from a worn key may inherit the problem, so tell us before we start. Sometimes the ignition needs attention, not just a new key.

Bring the old key if you have it, even if it is worn. It helps us tell whether the trouble is in the key or the lock.

What we confirm by VIN, and why call us

The chip family and programming method for this year are verified. Details not in our verified data, such as exact blade profile on your particular car and any remote buttons, we confirm by VIN or in person before we cut or order anything. We would rather check than guess.

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, and we are one company with no dispatch middlemen. David oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that license number before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2005 Toyota Highlander have a transponder chip in the key?

Yes. It uses a transponder key with a 4D-67 chip, and the data for this year is verified. The car will not start unless the chip is programmed to it.

Will a hardware-store copy start my 2005 Highlander?

No. A copy without a transponder chip may fit the ignition, but the engine will not start. The key needs a chip programmed to your car.

Can you make a key if I lost all my 2005 Highlander keys?

Yes, all keys lost is possible for this setup. We program the new key through the OBD port. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will go over the steps for your vehicle.

Do I need my original key to make a copy?

For duplication, yes, the original key is needed. If you have no working key at all, that is an all-keys-lost job, which is handled differently.

Do I have to go to a Toyota dealer for this key?

Not for this year, based on our data. The programming is done through the OBD port and does not require NASTF SDRM access. We still confirm details by VIN before starting.

My Highlander key is hard to turn. Is it the key or the ignition?

On high-mileage cars, either can be the cause. Worn ignition wafers and a worn key blade are both common on this year. Bring the key and we can tell which one needs work.

Can you come to my car, or do I have to bring it in?

Both work. We have mobile vans and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 to decide which makes sense for you.
