The 2007–2019 Versa uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Nissan Versa key guide.

What kind of key does a 2007 Versa use?
The 2007 Versa is a transponder-key car, not push-to-start. The base C11 cars use a bladed key with a keyed ignition, and the chip inside the plastic head is an ID46 (Philips Hitag-2), which is verified for this year. The car will only start when the chip in the key answers the immobilizer, and the blade also has to match the ignition cylinder.
That is why a hardware-store copy so often disappoints. It may turn the ignition lock, but if it was cut without a programmed chip, the engine will not start. Your car also has a mechanical backup key, so there is a physical blade we can cut and work from.
Nissan did offer an Intelligent Key option on SL trims. The data we rely on says to confirm that per vehicle, so if yours has a different key from the bladed one described here, tell us when you call. More on the model overall is on our Nissan Versa key page.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?
Both jobs are possible on this setup, and neither one requires towing the car to a dealer for programming. Programming is done through the OBD port, and the NASTF SDRM secure-database credential is not required for this year.
The difference is the starting point:
- Duplicate: you still have a working original key. Duplication on this car needs that original key, and we cut a new blade and program the new chip so the car accepts it.
- All keys lost: we can still make a key. We cut one to your ignition and program it to the car, which takes more steps than copying a key you have in hand.
- Either way, having a spare made before the last key is gone is the easier and lighter-cost path.
How we handle a 2007 Versa key job
Here is the usual order of work, whether we come to you in a mobile van or you stop by our Westwood storefront:
- Confirm the car: year, trim and VIN, and whether it has the bladed key or the Intelligent Key option.
- Check what you have: a working key, a broken one, or none at all.
- Cut the blade to fit the ignition, or to the mechanical backup key if that is what we are working from.
- Program the ID46 chip through the OBD port.
- Test the key on the ignition and the remote buttons, then start the car before we call it done.
What affects the price of a Versa key?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. The main factors are whether you have an original key to copy from, or all keys are lost; whether the key is the bladed transponder or the Intelligent Key version; and whether you need remote buttons working as well as engine starting.
Location and timing matter too. A mobile visit costs us travel and time, a storefront stop at 10740 Wilshire Blvd is usually the more economical route when the car can get there, and an after-hours call is handled differently from a weekday one.
Condition plays a part on a car this age. Worn ignition wafers or a worn key blade can make a new key turn poorly, and a cracked shell or dead remote battery is a smaller fix than a full replacement. We tell you what the job involves before we start work.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What we confirm by VIN
The chip family for this year is verified, but trim-level differences are not something we assume. If your Versa is an SL with the Intelligent Key option, we confirm what it uses by VIN and in person before promising a method. Call us at (213) 577-1366 or use the contact page with your VIN handy.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it. David has run Wilshire Lock & Key since 1987, and the same company answers the phone, sends the van and runs the shop, with no dispatch middlemen. Frequently asked questions
Will a hardware-store copy start my 2007 Versa?
Not if it has no programmed transponder chip. A plain cut key may turn in the ignition, but the engine will not start without the ID46 chip being programmed to the car.
Can you make a 2007 Versa key if I lost all of them?
Yes, all-keys-lost is possible for this year. We cut a key to your ignition and program it through the OBD port. We confirm trim and key type by VIN first.
Does the 2007 Versa have push-to-start?
The standard bladed-key cars do not. Some SL trims offered an Intelligent Key option, so we confirm what your specific car has before we begin.
Do I need the dealer to program the key?
No. For this year the programming method is OBD, and the NASTF SDRM credential is not required, so we can do the work ourselves.
Why does my Versa key turn badly even though it is cut right?
High-mileage Versas commonly have worn ignition wafers and worn key blades. A fresh key blade can help, but we check the ignition itself when we test the key.
My remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?
Not always. Cracked shells, broken buttons and dead remote batteries are common on this car, and some of those are smaller repairs than replacing the whole key.
How do I get a key made for my Versa?
Call (213) 577-1366, which is answered 24 hours a day. Tell us the year, trim, VIN if you have it, and whether you still have a working key.
