The 2016–2026 GLC (incl. GLK) uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Mercedes-Benz GLC (incl. GLK) key guide.

GLC (X253) replaced the GLK for MY2016 and is FBS4 (the X253 is explicitly documented as FBS4): added/replacement keys are effectively dealer-only — VIN-coded order and Xentry enablement with the car present.
What key does the 2016 GLC use, and what does that mean for you?
The GLC (X253) took over from the GLK for the 2016 model year, and it is documented as an FBS4 car (the chip family is listed as FBS4, also written DAS4). The key is a smart-proximity fob. The car senses it nearby, and you start the engine with the push button instead of turning a blade in an ignition.
For an owner, the practical meaning is simple: this is not a key that gets cut and cloned on a bench. FBS4 is Mercedes' tighter generation of key security. Added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, which means a VIN-coded key ordered through the dealer and enabled with Mercedes' Xentry system while the car is present.
We would rather tell you that up front than let you spend a day calling around for something nobody can honestly do on the roadside. If you want the wider picture for this model, see our GLC key overview and the Mercedes-Benz key page.
Is it a dead battery, a bad fob, or a car fault?
Before anyone orders a new key, it is worth knowing what is actually wrong. On this setup, the problems we would look at first are these:
- A dead fob battery. The car reports 'key not detected,' and that message often sends people to buy a key they don't need.
- Water-damaged fobs. A fob that went through the wash or a pocket in the rain can stop talking to the car.
- Keyless antenna or start-button faults. These can mimic a bad key, so a perfectly good fob gets blamed.
- A truly lost or damaged fob, which does need a VIN-coded dealer order.
Spare key or all keys lost: how does it work on this car?
The data for this year says an original key is not required to get a new one made, and that an all-keys-lost situation is possible to resolve. That is good news if you are standing there with nothing. It does not make it quick, though.
Because the replacement is VIN-coded and has to be enabled on the car with Xentry, expect a multi-day wait for the order. Having one working fob left doesn't change the dealer-only route, but it does mean you aren't stranded while you wait. If you have a spare, keep using it and order the second one early.
The GLC also has a mechanical backup key built into the fob. That matters when the battery is the problem: the physical key is there for getting into the car, though starting depends on the fob being read.

Call (213) 577-1366How we handle it, step by step
Here is how a call about a 2016 GLC usually goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what the car is doing and whether you have any fob at all.
- We help you work out whether it points to a dead battery, water damage, an antenna or start-button issue, or a truly lost fob.
- If it is a simple fob problem, we say so and you avoid ordering a key you don't need.
- If a new key really is needed, we explain the VIN-coded, dealer-enabled process and what to expect on timing, which is days, not hours.
- We confirm anything uncertain by VIN or with the car in front of us rather than guessing.
What affects the cost?
We won't quote a number for a car we haven't verified, and you should be wary of anyone who does over the phone. For this GLC, the cost depends on a few things:
Whether you need a new key at all. A battery or fault diagnosis is a very different job from a VIN-coded replacement. How many keys you need, since one spare and a full all-keys-lost replacement are different scopes. Whether the car has to be moved or visited, because enablement needs the car present. And whether the real culprit is the antenna or start button, which is repair work instead of key work.
The lighter-cost option is usually finding out the fob only needed a battery or drying out before buying anything. That is why we sort out the cause first.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
The chip family and the dealer-only status for the X253 are verified for this year. Details like exactly which fob style your particular car came with, or how a past replacement was done, can vary, so we confirm those by VIN or in person rather than assume.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. You get one company, not a dispatch middleman, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our line is answered 24 hours a day. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for theirs before work starts.

Frequently asked questions
Can a 2016 Mercedes GLC key be duplicated without the original?
Yes, an original key is not required, and all-keys-lost is possible. The catch is that replacement is effectively dealer-only: a VIN-coded order with Xentry enablement while the car is present.
Is the 2016 GLC the same as the GLK?
The GLC (X253) replaced the GLK for the 2016 model year, which is why this page covers GLC (incl. GLK). The 2016 GLC is documented as an FBS4 car.
My GLC says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and a keyless antenna or start-button fault can look the same. Check the cause before ordering anything.
How long does a replacement key take?
Plan on a multi-day wait, because the key is a VIN-coded dealer order. We can't promise a faster route on this setup.
Does the 2016 GLC have a backup key?
Yes, the fob has a mechanical backup key. It helps you get into the car if the battery dies, but starting still relies on the fob being detected.
What if my fob got wet?
Water-damaged fobs are a known problem on this setup. If it stops working after getting wet, we can help you determine whether it is recoverable or whether a replacement order is needed.
Is anything about this year unverified?
The chip family and dealer-only programming are verified for this year. For anything else specific to your car, such as the exact fob style, we confirm by VIN or in person.
