2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class key replacement

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class uses a push-to-start smart key with an FBS4 (DAS4) chip, and new keys are effectively dealer-only: VIN-coded, ordered through Mercedes, and enabled with the car present. A lost fob is a multi-day process, not a quick walk-in fix. Call (213) 577-1366 and we'll confirm your chassis by VIN.

The 2015–2026 C-Class uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class key guide.

First W205 year — FBS4 from launch (Mercedes' fallback-process bulletin S-B-80.57/62e lists model 205 as FBS4 for all model years), so added and replacement keys are effectively dealer-only: VIN-coded keys ordered through Mercedes and enabled with the car present in Xentry. Caveat: leftover W204 C-Class coupes were also sold as MY2015 and remain FBS3 — we confirm the chassis by VIN.

What kind of key does a 2015 C-Class use?

The 2015 model year is the first for the W205 generation, and Mercedes put its FBS4 system (also called DAS4) in these cars from launch. The key is a smart proximity fob. The car senses it nearby, unlocks the doors, and lets you start the engine with the push-button, so the fob can stay in your pocket.

Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin, S-B-80.57/62e, lists the model 205 as FBS4 for all model years. That is why this year behaves differently from older C-Classes you may have dealt with. The chip is encrypted and tied to your car's VIN, so a blank fob from a parts site will not simply be cloned or programmed on the spot.

Every one of these fobs also carries a mechanical backup key. It is there so you can still open the door if the fob battery dies or the fob stops responding. Keep it somewhere you can find it.

Can you duplicate a 2015 C-Class key, or is it all keys lost?

Having a working key in hand is not required. The data for this year shows that an original key is not needed to make a new one, and that an all-keys-lost situation can be solved. Either way, the route is the same: a key coded to your VIN is ordered through Mercedes and then enabled on the car with the car physically present, using Mercedes' Xentry diagnostic system.

In practice that means the difference between 'I have one key and want a spare' and 'I have no keys at all' is mostly about logistics and stress, not about a different technology. With one key you can usually plan ahead and order calmly. With none, you also have a car that may need to be moved to where the work happens, and you are waiting on the ordered key.

What affects the cost of a 2015 C-Class key?

We won't quote a number on a page, because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what actually moves the cost:

  • Whether you need an added spare or a full replacement because every key is gone.
  • The VIN-coded key itself, which is ordered through Mercedes and is the biggest part of the job.
  • Whether the car has to be towed or moved so it can be present for enabling.
  • How many fobs you want enabled at the same time.
  • Whether the real problem is the key at all. A dead battery, a water-damaged fob, or a keyless antenna or start-button fault can look like a bad key and cost far less to fix than a new one.

What commonly goes wrong with these keys?

Start with the simplest cause. If the dash says the key is not detected, a dead fob battery is the first suspect, and it is the lighter-cost fix. Replacing a battery is not a reason to order a new key.

If the fob went through the wash or spent time in a wet pocket, water damage is the next suspect. Those fobs often fail slowly, working one day and not the next.

A less obvious cause is the car itself. Keyless antenna faults and start-button faults can mimic a bad key. If a second fob behaves the same way, the key probably is not the problem, and ordering a new one would be money spent in the wrong place.

Truly lost or damaged fobs are the case that needs the VIN-coded dealer order, and you should expect a multi-day wait for that key to arrive.

  1. Try the mechanical backup key in the door if the fob will not unlock the car.
  2. Replace the fob battery and test again.
  3. Try a second fob, if you have one, to see whether the car or the first key is at fault.
  4. If the fob is lost or damaged, call us with the VIN so the correct key can be ordered.

One honest caveat: confirm the chassis by VIN

Most 2015 C-Class sedans are W205 cars with FBS4. But leftover W204 C-Class coupes were also sold as 2015 models, and those remain on the older FBS3 system. They are not the same key, and the ordering path differs.

So before anything is ordered, we check the VIN. It takes the guesswork out, and it prevents the worst outcome, which is paying for a key that does not belong to your car. If you are not sure which version you have, the VIN under the windshield or on your registration answers it.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key about a Mercedes key

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans, and you deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

Our value on a car like this is straight advice. We will tell you whether you have a battery problem or a key problem, confirm the chassis, and explain the dealer-only part of the process rather than pretend it does not exist. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith, us included, for it.

The phone is answered 24 hours a day at (213) 577-1366. You can also read about the Mercedes-Benz C-Class across other years, browse all Mercedes-Benz key service, see our wider car key services, or reach us through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2015 Mercedes C-Class a push-to-start car?

Yes. It uses a smart proximity key with push-button start, and the fob has a mechanical backup key for the door.

Can I get a 2015 C-Class key made if I lost every key?

Yes, all-keys-lost is possible. A VIN-coded key is ordered through Mercedes and enabled with the car present in Xentry. Expect a multi-day wait for the key.

Do I need my original key to make a spare?

No. The original key is not required for this setup, but the spare still follows the same VIN-coded, dealer-ordered route.

Why does my C-Class say the key is not detected?

The most common cause is a dead fob battery. Water damage to the fob or a keyless antenna or start-button fault can cause the same message, so check those before ordering a new key.

Can any locksmith just program a new fob for this car?

Not simply. Programming for this year is effectively dealer-only because the key is VIN-coded and enabled through Mercedes' system with the car present. Be cautious of anyone who promises otherwise without asking for your VIN.

My 2015 C-Class is a coupe. Is the key the same?

Not necessarily. Leftover W204 coupes were sold as 2015 models and use the older FBS3 system. We confirm the chassis by VIN before ordering anything.
