The 2023–2024 RX uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus RX key guide.
2023 Lexus RX: key facts
- Key type
- Smart / proximity key
- Push-to-start
- Yes
- Transponder chip
- DST-AES ('B9' smart key, 8A family)
- Programming
- OBD
- All keys lost
- We can originate new keys on site
New AL30 generation uses the 'B9' DST-AES smart key with server-based authentication during key registration; all-keys-lost is possible with server-connected specialist equipment (e.g., Abrites TN016) or at the dealer — not every shop covers these yet.
What kind of key does a 2023 Lexus RX use?
Your 2023 RX runs on a smart-proximity key with push-to-start. The car senses the fob nearby, so nothing gets inserted or turned. The chip family is DST-AES, the 'B9' smart key in the 8A family. That is the newer generation, and it is not the same as the older bladed transponder keys many people still picture when they think of a car key.
Inside the fob is a mechanical backup key. It is there for the day the fob stops talking to the car, and it is worth knowing where yours is before you need it.
The problems we see most on this setup are simple ones:
- A dead smart-fob battery, where the car reports 'key not detected'
- A lost fob, which costs more to replace than a bladed key
- A water-damaged or crushed fob
Do you need a spare copy or are all keys lost?
These are two different jobs on this vehicle. If you still have a working key, duplication is the easier case, because the original key is needed for it. Bring it along or have it with you when we arrive.
If every key is gone, replacement is still possible. The catch is how it gets done. On this generation, key registration uses server-based authentication, so a shop needs server-connected specialist equipment (the Abrites TN016 is one example) or the job goes to the dealer. Not every shop covers this yet, and we would rather tell you that up front than have you find out after a wasted visit.
Programming itself is done through the car's OBD port. It also requires NASTF SDRM access, which is the secure-data registry a locksmith has to be enrolled in to program newer vehicles.
How we handle a 2023 RX key job
Here is how it normally goes when you call us:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what happened: lost fob, dead fob, damaged fob, or no keys at all.
- We ask for your VIN and confirm the exact key and programming route for your car, before anyone drives out.
- If a working key exists, we note that, since it changes the job. If not, we confirm whether we can complete an all-keys-lost job or whether the dealer is the right place for your car.
- A technician comes to you in a mobile van, or you come to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd.
- The new smart key is registered through the OBD port, then tested for starting and for the car recognizing it.
What affects the price of a 2023 RX key?
We won't quote a number without your VIN, and you should be wary of anyone who does. A smart key for this car costs more than a bladed key, and these things move the final figure:
The biggest swing is whether you have a working key. Duplicating from an existing key is a lighter job than starting from zero with all keys lost, which needs server-connected authentication.
Beyond that, it comes down to how many keys you want, whether the mechanical backup blade needs cutting, where the car is, and whether it has to be towed or can be reached by our van. If the dealer is the only workable route for your car, we will say so rather than sell you something we cannot finish. A dead battery is worth ruling out first, since a fob that reports 'key not detected' is not always a fob that needs replacing.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
The core facts above are verified for this model year. But the 'B9' generation is new, and shop coverage for the server-based registration varies. So we confirm by VIN, and in person if needed, exactly which key your car takes and whether we can program it ourselves. We would rather say 'that one goes to the dealer' than guess.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We are one company with a storefront and our own mobile vans, so there is no dispatch middleman between your call and the person doing the work. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how these jobs are done. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for theirs.
For general information on other models, see our Lexus key replacement overview, the Lexus RX page, or the full car keys section. If you are ready to talk, use the contact page or call (213) 577-1366, any hour, any day.
Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a 2023 Lexus RX key if I lost all of them?
It is possible on this vehicle, but it needs server-connected specialist equipment or the dealer. Not every shop covers it yet. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will confirm whether we can complete it.
Do I need my original key to make a copy?
Yes. Duplication on this setup needs the original key. If you have no working key, the job becomes an all-keys-lost replacement, which is a different process.
My RX says 'key not detected'. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A dead battery in the smart fob is a common cause of that message. If the fob still fails after the battery is addressed, or it has been wet or crushed, replacement is the next step.
Is the 2023 RX key a transponder key?
It is a smart-proximity key with a DST-AES chip, the 'B9' smart key in the 8A family. It also has a mechanical backup key inside the fob.
How is the new key programmed?
Programming is done through the car's OBD port and requires NASTF SDRM access. All-keys-lost jobs also need server-based authentication during key registration.
Will the dealer be my only option?
Not always, but sometimes. Depending on your VIN and the equipment needed, a few all-keys-lost cases may only be workable at the dealer. We tell you that honestly when we confirm your VIN.
How much does a 2023 RX key cost?
We do not quote without your VIN. A smart fob costs more than a bladed key, and the price depends on whether you have a working key, how many keys you need, and where the car is.
Do you come to me or do I come to you?
Both work. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans, and our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
