The 2016–2022 RX uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus RX key guide.

HYQ14FBB smart fob (G board 0010), 8A chip. Add-a-key over OBD is routine; all-keys-lost uses a DST-AES emulator with professional tools.
What kind of key does a 2016 Lexus RX use?
The 2016 RX does not use a traditional bladed key. It runs on a smart proximity fob and push-to-start ignition. The car senses the fob nearby, so you can unlock the doors and start the engine without taking it out of your pocket. Inside the fob is an 8A chip, a 128-bit DST-AES transponder. The fob our data points to for this year is the HYQ14FBB, with a G board marked 0010.
Every smart fob also holds a mechanical backup key. It slides out of the fob and works in the door lock if the fob battery dies. That matters on a dead-battery morning, because the backup key gets you into the car, but it is not the same as having a working fob for starting it. The common problems we see on this setup are:
- A dead fob battery, where the dash reports 'key not detected'
- Water-damaged fobs, such as one that went through the wash
- Crushed or cracked fobs
- A lost fob, which costs more to replace than a bladed key would
Add a spare, or replace after every key is lost?
These are two different jobs on this RX, and the difference is whether you still have an original fob. Duplication needs an original key present. If you have one working fob, we program a new one to the car over the OBD port. This is routine work, and it is the more economical route compared with waiting until the last fob is gone.
If all keys are lost, it can still be done. The 8A chip uses DST-AES encryption, so we work with a DST-AES emulator and professional programming tools rather than a simple copy. It takes more equipment and more steps than adding a key, which is why a spare made now is worth it. For the 2016 RX, the data we hold shows NASTF SDRM credentials are not required for programming, so this does not have to go to a dealer.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have any working fob.
- We confirm the fob type against your VIN before we order or prepare anything.
- A technician comes to you in a mobile van, or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront.
- We program the new fob over OBD, then test the push-to-start, locks, and backup key.
- If it was an all-keys-lost job, we recommend making a spare before we leave.
What affects the cost of a 2016 RX key?
We do not quote prices on a web page, because the number depends on facts we have to check first. For this RX the main factors are:
- Whether you have a working original fob. Add-a-key is lighter in cost than all keys lost.
- The fob itself. A smart fob costs more than a bladed key, and a genuine part differs from an aftermarket one.
- The condition of the old fob. A fob that is merely out of battery needs far less than one that is water-damaged.
- Where the car is. A job at our storefront involves no travel, and a mobile call does.
- How many fobs you want. Programming a second fob in the same visit is usually more efficient than coming back later.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What we confirm by VIN
The data for this year is verified: the 8A chip, OBD programming, and the need for an original key to duplicate. Still, fob part numbers and boards can differ between builds, so we confirm the exact fob by VIN, or in person, before we order one. That keeps you from paying for a fob that looks right but will not pair to your car. If the VIN shows something different from our data, we will tell you what it is and what that changes. Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for this
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You get one company, not a dispatcher passing your call to whoever is nearest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Our line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at (213) 577-1366.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. You can also use our contact page to send the car details first, or browse all car key services.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 2016 Lexus RX have a push-to-start fob?
Yes. The 2016 RX uses a smart proximity fob with push-to-start ignition and an 8A (128-bit DST-AES) transponder chip, plus a mechanical backup key inside the fob.
My RX says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not always. A dead battery in the smart fob is a common cause. Try the backup key in the door and replace the battery first. If the message continues, or the fob has been wet or crushed, it may need replacement or reprogramming.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
Yes. All-keys-lost is possible on this setup. It takes a DST-AES emulator and professional tools, so it involves more work than adding a key when you still have an original fob.
Do I have to go to the Lexus dealer?
Not for programming. Our data shows programming over OBD and no NASTF SDRM requirement for this year. We still confirm the fob by VIN before we start.
Can I just copy my fob?
We add a new fob rather than clone the old one, and adding one requires an original key to be present. If you have one working fob, now is the time to have a spare made.
Will you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
Either one. Our mobile vans cover 140 cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will go over which makes sense for your situation.
